Woodruff can hit a little?

KISS IT GOODBYE! @B_Woody24 with his 1st career HR gives the #Shuckers a 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd!

9 up/9 down for @B_Woody24 the 1st time through the lineup. 5 Ks on the night. #Shuckers lead, 1-0 behind Woodruff's HR

Considering the events of the past week, what an effort!

Woodruff's July line is 23.2 IP 0.38 ERA, 0.72 WHIP, 32:3 K:BB. He did hit 3 batters. He is in my organizational top 10 now.

Win Streak Snapped by Captains

Lake County beats Wisconsin 6-2

Isan Diaz extended his hitting streak to eight games as he went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk on Sunday. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

Wisconsin Boxsocre

I was worried about this game from a pitching standpoint, but it turned out to be the correct assumption for the wrong reasons as Thomas Jankins actually lowered his ERA with 3 scoreless. This was however a rather uninspiring bullpen performance... David Lucroy's 4.86 ERA is moving the wrong way, he's essentially been giving up crooked numbers every other outing for some time now. Scott Gist has been on the short end of some 9th inning blow ups here recently but on the whole has had an excellent season.

just 4 hits from the offense... already covered previously in the thread.

Final (10 Innings): Charlotte 7, Brevard County 6

Stone Crabs earn wild walk-off win over Manatees

By Donald Rieber, Jr., 27 Outs Baseball

***

Brevard County Box Score

The game story covered the outings for Marcos Diplan and Kodi Medeiros including Diplan's fastball velocity on his two strikeouts.

Corey Ray reached base on a HBP, but finished 0-for-5 at the plate with 3 strike outs. Since raising his batting average up to .266 following a 2-hit effort on Monday, Ray has gone just 2-for-25 since with an average that now sits at .213.

A pair of hits for Dustin DeMuth (2-for-3, 2-BB) who as I mentioned yesterday ranks third in the Florida State League in total hits. Not only are DeMuth's 105 hits near the top of the FSL, but for perspective the next highest hit total from a Manatee currently on the roster is George Iskenderian with 69 hits.

Others with multiple hits included Wendell Rijo (2-for-5, BB) and Clint Coulter (2-for-4, 2B, BB).

Catcher Dustin Houle threw 3 baserunners out at second base, but as you read in the game story was pulled from behind the plate before the start of the bottom of the 8th inning due to an apparent injury.

Brevard County Game Log

For a second straight day the Manatees get walked off, and very quickly at that.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Woodruff homers, flirts with perfection, in Biloxi's 1-0 win over Wahoos

Brandon Woodruff struck out nine over six innings of one-hit ball

Biloxi Boxscore

So I joked around about Brandon Woodruff being able to swing it a little bit when he was 4-10 on the season, now he's added a homer so it's not much of a joke anymore, he can swing it some. What a performance to bail out the nonexistent offense that once again only managed 3 hits, and only 2 hits beyond Woodruff's homer.

The position players did play clean defense so there's that. This is actually one of the better defensive clubs in the Southern League aside from Nottingham who's had a tough year defensively.

Weekend was very encouraging for Brewer pitching prospects. Hader finally had a nice outing in Colorado Springs and Woodruff was dominating. Even Suter and Burgos registered nice starts. Now if Peralta can follow up on his 11 K performance with another strong one, maybe the rotation in Milwaukee will look a bit different a week from now.

Shuckers Shutout Blue Wahoos

NorthEscambia.com

Despite managing only two hits Sunday, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos still had a chance to tie or win the game in the ninth inning, trailing the Biloxi Shuckers by one run.

However, after Pensacola catcher Chad Wallach hit a leadoff double to start the ninth, Biloxi closer Stephen Kohlscheen set the next three batters down in order for his 12th save to nail down the Shuckers, 1-0, victory.

It was the least Kohlscheen could do after Brandon Woodruff gave the sellout Blue Wahoos crowd of 5,038 a gutty performance. He missed his last start because his brother, Blake, died in an ATV accident Friday, July 15.

Woodruff improved to 5-6 with a 3.65 ERA by allowing one hit and striking out nine in six innings. He started the game by striking out the side and had a perfect game until Pensacola right fielder Sebastian Elizalde got a hit to lead off the fifth inning.

Pensacola starter and former Brewers farmhand Barrett Astin set down 15 of the 16 batters he faced in five innings of work. The only hit he gave up was a two-out solo shot belted by — who else? — Woodruff on a “cutter that didn’t cut.” It was Woodruff’s first professional home run.

“I’ve known Woody for six or seven years now,” said Astin, who has now gone 14.2 innings without giving up a walk. “The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t ask more out of him. He was probably high on adrenalin. That was good to see.”

In his sixth spot starts this season, Astin is 2-2 with a 3.96 ERA.

Pensacola manager Pat Kelly was well aware that Woodruff was pitching just after his brother died. His brother’s last tweet was about Brandon’s season-high 10 strikeout game July 13 that earned him the Southern League’s Pitcher of the Week honor.

“That’s an amazing thing for me that he was pitching with a heavy heart,” Kelly said. “It was a really incredible feat.”

Woodruff has now given up four hits in 13 innings to Pensacola and struck out 19. Biloxi manager Mike Guerrero said Woodruff was begging to pitch the seventh but was replaced with Shuckers reliever Stephen Peterson.

During both of Pensacola’s losses in this five-game series to Biloxi, the Blue Wahoos earned only two hits each game and combined for 28 strikeouts.

“Woodruff has got great stuff — a 97-mile-per-hour fastball, a really good slider and a changeup,” Kelly said. “I want to know what he’s doing in this league.”

Pensacola, though, won its second straight series at home in the second half and have now won nine of 10 this season. It is 15-15 in the second half and 56-44 overall.

The Blue Wahoos ended up winning 11 of 15 home games against the Shuckers this season.

Peralta start will be Tuesday in Nashville....anyone know why he is skipping his Monday start in the Springs?

I think it's reasonable to think they just don't want him to make a start in Colorado Springs.

On the other hand, moving him to Tuesday lines him up with Garza's sport in the rotation. If Garza didn't have another year left on his deal I'd say they were going to cut Garza loose and bring Peralta back. The odds of this happening right now are pretty small, IMO, but I don't think it's a zero possibility situation either.
