Link Report for Friday 7/22

Brewer Fanatic Staff

More from Pensacola --

“(Wang) was hitting both sides of the plate. Seemed to be locating everything,” Pensacola manager Pat Kelly said. “Made some really good pitches.”

Wang struck out the first five batters he faced on the way to tying a career-high with nine strikeouts.

“He’s very deceptive. He changes speed,” Kelly said. “He throws that changeup and the slow curve, then he’s got the little-bit-harder slider. It’s the changing speeds.”

Biggest staunch supporter Harold (clancyfile), it's your Brent Suter world, we just live in it, Suter has tamed the Springs.

Colorado Springs Game Log

You know, I was looking at the Sky Sox lineup in this one, and you could actually make the case that the top four in the lineup is a feasible top four for a Brewers' order if the trade deadline really blows up. Mix in some useful parts below that, and it's not hard to see why, up until this last disastrous road trip, this team has been fun to follow.

And yes, Rick Sweet's moustache is officially no more after the 0-8 voyage, we need pictures soon.

This, on the other hand, could be an injury or a discussion on not getting picked off in a tight game, we'll see --

Biggest staunch supporter Harold (clancyfile), it's your Brent Suter world, we just live in it, Suter has tamed the Springs.

The task now is to stretch him out to be starter so he can replace someone in the Brewers' rotation next year. I think his floor is as a left-handed Mike Fiers. Ceiling is a #2 starter, but given what he's doing in Colorado Springs... who knows?

As much as I would love that, there is no universe where Suter has a number 2 ceiling. His milb career So/9 is 6.9. His H/9 is 9.1. Not walking guys does not a number 2 starter make. As well as not a single prospect watcher call singling him out as a prospect period much less a top prospect.

Any reason given for this? Cecchini had doubled and scored in the previous inning.

Round Rock Top of the 8th

Defensive Substitution: Brandon Macias replaces first baseman Garin Cecchini, batting 5th, playing first base.

Seemed strange with a 10-0 lead at the time and Cecchini due to hit again in the bottom of the 8th. Injury?

(Of course at the time the conspiracy theorist in me wondered if it meant a Carter trade or the Brewers finally deciding that Middlebrooks and/or Wilkins had enough time to show what little they could offer the big league club)

Look where Suter's pitching. Most of that staff's pitchers get clubbed like baby seals. Lopez is getting clubbed. Hader's getting clubbed. Suter isn't. He's posting a 2.08 ERA since May 7 (with the exception of ONE start on June 19), again with half the time being in Colorado Springs. He's allowed TWO home runs all year in 84.1 innings. Last year, posted a 3.31 ERA in 35 innings in Colorado Springs - a superb performance, the only negative I saw there as he gave up four gopher balls.

A 2.08 ERA is dominating in and of itself. Suter's doing it pitching half the time in a hitter's park where most of the rest of the staff are getting clubbed like baby seals more often than not, and he's given up HALF the homers he gave up in a sample only 5/12 the size of this season.

Forget the prospect watchers. The numbers from last year and this year tell me Suter's put it together. If they stretch him out as a starter, then the Brewers have a legit contributor in the rotation. Lefty Mike Fiers at worst, and very possibly a #2 starter.

Clancy, my point is you do not know what a number 2 starter is. I don't get the fascination with Suter. Do you not see what has been happening to Fiers this year? In no universe is Fiers a number 2 starter. Neither Suter nor Fiers have a plus pitch and most true number 2s have multiple. ERA in the minors is not the only metric to measure a pitcher's future. Ability to strike out batters and throw quality strikes (which judging by his atrocious Opp AVG isn't great). This is not to say that I'd think Suter has earned a chance to pitch in Milwaukee.
