Nice outing by Zack Brown today.

Looks like everybody had fun in Pensacola tonight (sorry, it never gets old).

Literally everybody had fun in Colorado Springs, as everyone in the staring lineup has a hit and Reed is the only one without at least two hits. What's the scouting report on Pina? He had a pretty good year in Toledo last year too.

Biloxi Boxscore

Wei-Chung Wang with his best start since July 1, wow. Stephen Kohlscheen continues his excellent season, he now has 46 SOs in 33.2 innings.

Biloxi managed double digit hits! Brett Phillips busted out of his slump in a big way, hopefully this gets his him streaking the other way as MH pointed the horrible slump he was in. I don't play the excuse game with prospects (giving him a pass on average because his power stroke came back) so I'll just say that I find his 2016 campaign extremely disappointing. He would have to be Mitch Ghelfi hot most of August to salvage this year's batting line.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Back to .500!

Every Ratter pitcher in this game gave up at least one run. Corbin Burnes wasn't as dominant as his first time time out but that was balanced by Zach Brown pitching much better than he did his first 2 times out.

Troy Stokes (3-5,3B,2 2B) and Lucas Erceg (3-4,3B,2B) were monsters at the plate, though Erceg had a fairly costly throwing error in the 9th. Jake Gatewood (2-4,2B) also had a multi hit game, and has 4 multi hit games in his last 5, as the Rattlers once again broke double digit hits. I talked about how David Denson has struggled since teams started playing the exaggerated shifts against him, but I haven't mentioned that his OF defense is spotty at best, he just doesn't read the ball well off the bat yet. I honestly don't understand that move, it's worked out because of injury, but he's just not athletic or as experienced as the other OFs in the system or even on this team and with even reasonable OF health he would have been relegated to DH duty all season. MH and I have taken Brandon Diaz to task for his incredibly poor season at the plate but he's still playing fantastic defense. He didn't play tonight, but it occurred to me that I didn't mention his great plays from the previous games in this series, hopefully people are watching the highlights on a daily basis, there's just been so much to talk about each day.

Final: Helena 8, Idaho Falls 7, ten innings

Brewers mount comeback, walk-off in extras

Ryan Collingwood, Helena Independent Record

Three quality captioned photos at the link

A semblance of a routine inning would have given the Idaho Falls Chukars their 20th Pioneer League triumph.

Instead, the South Division co-leaders coughed up three ninth-inning errors, and the Helena Brewers took advantage of each.

Wes Wilson's bases-loaded single forced extra innings and, in the 10th, Nathan Rodriguez's walk-off single cemented a thrilling, 8-7 comeback win at Kindrick Legion Field.

Idaho Falls, which has committed nine errors in the series' first two games, saw sizable Brewers first baseman Ronnie Gideon reach third after a down-the-line double that was mishandled by the Chukars right-fielder.

In the subsequent at-bat, Rodriguez poked a single to left field before being mobbed by teammates, celebrating their second win in as many nights.

The Brewers (13-20), in the cellar of the North Division, improved their home record to 9-5.

It was the timely offense of Wilson, though, which spearheaded the Brewers' rally.

Trailing 6-2 in the eighth, Wilson sent a towering shot that carried over the left-field wall -- a three-run shot -- for the first homer of his professional career. He went 2 for 5 with four RBIs.

Yeraldy Martinez also homered in the seventh, his seventh of the season for Helena.

The Chukars (19-14), who swept the Brewers in Idaho Falls last week, earned the bulk of their runs in a disastrous second inning for Helena.

Brewers starting pitcher Nash Walters, a third-round draft pick, walked five consecutive hitters, two of which walked in runs. Idaho Falls tallied four runs in the frame and managed just one hit, a two-run Ricky Aracena double.

Gideon (3 for 4) and Rodriguez (3 for 5) paced the Brewers, who tallied 12 hits in the win.

Idaho Falls, which leads the Pioneer League in errors, was led by Aracena (2 for 5, two RBIs) and Yelson Melo (2 for 5, RBI).

Reliever Shawn Clowers earned the win for Helena, giving up one run and four hits in three innings, and striking out three.

The two teams in meet in Game 3 of the series at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central) Saturday at Kindrick Legion Field.

Helena Box Score

Quality work by the three hurlers who followed Nash Walters, review the box for details, please; quality clutch work because Idaho Falls was 4-for-21 with RISP...

Helena Game Log

In addition to the position players who received well-earned mentions in Ryan's game story above, LF Demi Orimoloye reached three times and Gilbert Lara, DH'ing here, reached twice. Both still have work to do to improve their overall lines. They hit 3-4 in the lineup again in this one.

More on Biloxi's road game --

Shuckers' Phillips ends funk with big night

Brewers No. 2 prospect collects three hits, homers, drives in two runs

By Mack Burke / MiLB.com

Brett Phillips' recent tough stretch started against Reds No. 30 prospect Jackson Stephens and, ironically, ended against him on Friday night.

The Brewers' second-ranked prospect broke out of a 0-for-27 funk with three hits, including a solo homer, and two RBIs as Double-A Biloxi held on for a 3-2 win over Pensacola at Blue Wahoos Stadium. It was Phillips' fourth three-hit game of the season.

Phillips promptly ended his rough stretch with a single to left field off Stephens (6-9) with two outs in the first inning. He stepped to the dish again with two outs in the third and took the 22-year-old right-hander deep to left-center field for his first homer since June 27.

Phillips bounced out in the fifth inning, then sent a soft liner to left in the seventh for a two-out single that plated his second run of the night. He struck out in the ninth.

The Florida native's 0-for-27 stretch dated back to a July 11 contest against Stephens and Pensacola in which he was 0-for-4 with two punchouts. The slump dropped his average just over 20 points, but Friday's game boosted it to back to .230.

Shuckers starter Wei-Chung Wang (5-5) was perfect through four innings and departed with one out in the seventh after allowing a run on two hits and a walk while striking out nine. Stephen Kohlscheen got the final four outs for his 11th save.

Tom Belza went 2-for-3 with a solo shot in the fourth inning for Biloxi.

Stephens (6-9) gave up two runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings.

Quotes within this game story in Pensacola (full article here) --

Biloxi starting lefty Wei-Chung Wang started the game by striking out the first five Blue Wahoos hitters he faced. He ended up striking out a career-high nine in 6.1 innings. He gave up just two hits and one walk and allowed one run on a solo blast by Pensacola catcher Joe Hudson.

Wang has now won three of four games against Pensacola this season. The native of Taiwan improved to 5-5 in 17 starts for the Shuckers and lowered his ERA to 3.61.

“He’s very deceptive,” Kelly said. “He changes speeds. His fastball ranges from 87-to-94 (mph). I don’t think he gets the credit for being very good. He has better stuff than people think.”

Meanwhile, Jackson Stephens, who dropped to 6-9 this year, also threw a solid start. He gave up two solo homers among seven hits allowed, walked two and struck out four in six innings pitched.

“Two solo home runs usually don’t beat you,” Kelly said.

One of those homers was by center fielder Brett Phillips, who snapped an 0-27 skid Friday, by going 3-5 with a run scored, stolen base and two RBIs. He also hit a two-out single in the seventh to drive in left fielder Johnny Davis for Biloxi’s third run of the game. The other homer was hit by second baseman Tom Belza.

“He’s a good hitter,” Kelly said about Phillips. “You’re not going to hold him down forever. He made some adjustments. He widened his stance with two strikes. Now, we have to make some adjustments to him.”
