Options for streaming Packers / NFL games?

Patrick425

Can anyone tell me about NFL game pass? My son is going to school out of state and is bummed about missing Packer games. So, as a "HS graduation/going off to college" gift we were thinking of getting him NFL game pass, so that he could watch the games on his lap top if he wanted. Anyone have any good or bad things to say about this app? Thanks.

Edit...Ok, I'm a little naive about these things. Someone at work said that he believed you had to be a Direct TV subscriber to get that (I had no idea)...but someone else said they thought there was a special deal for college students.

GamePass is a subscription service, however it will NOT allow you to watch regular season and post season games live.

I think what'd you'd want is this:

At this time, NFLSUNDAYTICKET.TV is available to:

•People who live in multi-unit buildings not serviced by DIRECTV (apartments, condos, high-rise buildings, etc.)

•People who live in select areas within various metropolitan cities

•Any students currently enrolled in a U.S. college or university

•People who live in a residence that has been verified as unable to receive DIRECTV satellite TV service due to obstructions blocking access to satellite signals or other housing restrictions

I think there's an option available, but it seems to be a bit complicated because there are so many networks involved. Everything here is based on 2015 information. I went through three articles quickly, so this info could be off by a bit.

It appears that NFL Game Pass isn't live, so that might not be the option you want. NFL Sunday Ticket is for Sunday games only and requires DirectTV, so that's limited. Watch ESPN and Fox Sports Go require cable subscriptions but are free otherwise.

Fox Sports Go offers only out of market games. It'd be a bit of a cheat, but your son could log in with your cable credentials (what the heck, he'll still be kind of a member of your household). Since he'd be out of market, he should be able to see the games carried by FOX.

NFL Mobile apparently offers all games live as long as you're a Verizon customer and you have an Apple TV, Xbox 360, or Xbox One. I don't understand the connection between Verizon and those devices; maybe that's Verizon's home Internet service rather than Verizon wireless.

I remember researching this for work last year, and I think I may have made a thread about it, too. I don't remember the specific company names, but what I took from it all is that there is one separate service to stream the games live, and another separate service to stream the games spoiler-free after they've finished.

Of course there's always the option to pay game-by-game. Especially if he's going to school in an AFC city, the Packers are popular enough that there's a lot of games on national tv that you wouldn't need a streaming service for.

The thing is that there are a few bases to cover. FOX games are streamed by FOX, CBS games are streamed by CBS, and ESPN games are streamed by ESPN. Sunday Ticket is only for Sunday afternoons. And then there is whoever carries Thursday games. NBC games are likely to be readily available, and ESPN games may be too.

Does Fox Sports Go determine which games are available based on one's cable login location or on one's actual location? I've only tried it at home; in that case, the locations would be the same.

I think that last year they offered a digital version of Sunday ticket to college students (IIRC you needed a valid .edu email) for $99. You can use one device at a time (i.e. password should only be shared with trusted folks), but I'd imagine streaming on a tablet is nice for dorm rooms. They have a roku app, but last year it was buggy; I've had far better luck with streaming on tablets than anything else for some reason.

Besides, having Sunday ticket probably isn't a bad way to meet a few friends, find a college fantasy league, etc.

If he's going off to college then he can get Sunday Ticket without Directv. When I was in college that's what I did. Think it cost me about $120 for the entire season.

This is correct. The pricing is significantly cheaper for students.

Also, Sunday Ticket can be streamed on Sony's Playstation network for sure, and probably on Microsoft's Xbox network (whatever it's called), so if he has a gaming system there would be no need for DirectTV or use of a tablet.

Thanks for all the advice everyone! Did not know about the Fox go sports app using the cable login. In regards to the Direct TV Sunday ticket....could he use his laptop as a device to stream it on (he currently does not have a tablet), or his phone?
