Milwaukee Bucks 2016 - 2017

I'll be the lone wolf, and say they gave up on MCW too early. He's still very young, and yes, he may never be able to shoot. But he has shown the ability to get to the rack and finish, or get fouled. Stretches in games where your PG is blocking shots, bringing down a lot of rebounds, and playing tough defense when he wants to.

Look, there's a reason the Bulls traded for him. MCW was arguably the best player for the Bucks in the playoff series vs the Bulls. I get it, he makes too many bone-headed players and is very frustrating to watch. But there's still a chance he can get better.

Based on what?

Point guard is almost always a position where good players at that position are more so born than taught. Instincts are needed to be a quality PG and MCW is severely lacking in that regard. To think he'll just some day get it as a point guard would take bucking serious odds because that rarely happened.

Going forward, i see MCW as little more than a backup energy PG off the bench who plays good defense. Mix in his terrible shooting, he has to be surrounded by shooters for space. On this Bucks team though where Giannis will be handling the ball so much and a lack of shooting with Middleton out, having a brick machine from the perimeter like MCW playing off the ball often is a terrible fit.

Both of Snell and MCW are spare parts type of NBA players, but Snell at least fits the Bucks roster better if he can hit open threes and defend. With both of Giannis and Parker being guys who will score most of their points in the paint, they need other players on the court who defenders have to respect can hit threes or else they'll just clog up that paint.

PG is no longer the same position it once was, nor is center, or virtually any position in the NBA today. Grannis is pla u information point, and not in the strict sense of what pg used to be. He often won't guard the opposing teams pg on defense for example.

I agree basketball iq is tough to learn. MCW will probably never run an offense on his own. But he can get better at it. I just think they had little to lose by giving him another year. Not a huge deal they traded himy though.

I think the Bucks simply were in desperate need of a guy who can shoot threes and play defense from the SG spot, partially because the Vaughn pick is proving to be a complete bust. Man is he horrible.

FWIW, i do think MCW has a place in the NBA, but fit will be important because of his biggest deficiencies in IQ at point guard and his horrific shooting. He does play hard though, defends, and has the size to post up smaller point guards. Put him on a team with shooting and where he's not asked to run the offense much so he isn't dribbling the air out of the ball, he can be a productive bench player.

I'm mostly frustrated with the Bucks front office overall. We have two great young talents in Giannis/Parker, but i don't trust those in charge will put a quality roster around them. I did love the Dellavedova signing, but then they foolishly hand Plumlee 52 million even though he was a RFA, on top of the 40 plus million Henson was given. They'll be making nearly 25 million combined the next four years and neither is close to being being good.

Here is how I see the starting 5 defensively:

1 - Delly

2 - Snell

3 - Jabari

4 - Giannis

5 - Plumroeson (Monsonlee?)

I think it was Mike Lombardi (former NFL GM) who said, "I don't ever want to trade for or sign a guy and then immediately say, 'What we need is [that position]"

I feel like that's exactly what happened with Plumlee, Henson and Monroe. Honestly. The teams bench is going to be terrible, it's been 2 full off seasons of horrible moves, and Kidd still appears to be running his gimmicky defense out there, which everyone has figured out (pass it twice, wide open 3).

My prediction for the year is 39-43. Giannis and Parker make big strides but the lack of outside scoring threats and weak bench continues to kill the team. Giannis also makes his first all star team and makes All-NBA 3rd team. No one of consequence is traded at the deadline since it appears Monroe has no trade value.

Best case scenario maybe they win 45 games.

Does anyone else hate this move? I am no MCW fan and on the surface this move is OK because Snell can help fill in the lost of Middleton. what i question is why the heck did you trade ennis for Beasley already this offseason to make up for the loss of Middleton, thus having NO true point guards on the roster, and a bunch of 2's and 3's that are average NBA players.

is there another move?

is beasley not making the team?

who knows but something smells.

All my teams are just run by stupid people from the top down. Tony Snell? Why?

We could have had a lottery pick for MCW but Kidd wanted him. We sign Monroe. Both guys play like MCW and Monroe with no surprises, then we dump them for pennies on the dollar.

Hopefully we can complete the Braun for Puig plus a bad contract and the year will be complete. Yeah!!!!

Settle down, Trump.

Just because you can't grasp the logic behind a trade doesn't mean it's not good for the team now or moving forward. And when was "Braun for Puig/McCarthy" ever a reported proposal?

Regarding all other comments - how is the bench weak? There are going to be various starting lineups but off the bench you're looking at Delly or Snell along with Teletovic shooting 39-40% from deep. Beasley is instant offense. Monroe will kill reserve Centers while not getting killed on defense because the average reserve Center isn't good. Henson will alter shots and rebound. Then mix in an all-around player in Brogdon, veteran in Terry and length in Thon.

I will never understand how people think MCW sucks. He's very good defensively, great at rebounding for a point, great at getting to the basket against anyone, will have terrible turnovers at times but also creates open shots for others (had a career low 2.8 turnovers last year and has avg 6apg over career). His jump shooting isn't good. The biggest problem with him on the roster was our 2 best players (Giannis/Parker) absolutely can't shoot from deep and Giannis isn't any different than MCW when it comes to jumpers in general - he gets his points from going to the basket. If Giannis had a legitimate jump shot then MCW would fit in just fine. But that's not the case and with Middleton out it's amplified. But saying MCW sucks isn't remotely accurate. He does a lot of things very well - the things he doesn't do well just don't fit into this specific team. MCW off the bench would kill backups, which is why I think we should have held on to him but if he's not getting plenty of minutes with Giannis running point then they did what they thought was best for improving the team in getting a perimeter defender who is solid at shooting 3s (36-37%) in Snell.

1) Delly and Snell are going to be starting, so they aren't coming off the bench.

2) Beasley's team was 10 points WORSE with him on the court last year in Houston. He might score a lot but he literally does nothing else well, especially not anything on the defensive end

3) Rookies cannot be counted on to perform in the NBA. They very, very rarely do.

4) Terry is done, he can't guard anyone, and can't get by anyone with the ball anymore. He's a spot up 3-point shooter, not much different than Novak.

5) Monroe will get killed on defense, same as last year, because the defensive scheme asks him to do things he simply cannot do.

So when does this team start to Own the Present? For years we get to hear how good they are going to be, and based on what I've seen tonight it looks a lot like the same old mediocrity we've seen since for about 15 years...

I keep trying to get into this team, but the combination of mediocrity and the style of NBA basketball makes it tough. Thank god for college ball.

Last night is kind of a microcosm of what I was expecting going in. Giannis is going to be very good on most nights and the rest of the supporting cash it kind of blah. For being the shooter we needed Teletovic was terrible. Parker was also invisible for most the night.

One game against a pretty good team; but that is the kind of team you need to beat at home if you want to go to the playoffs and they were never in it.

They weren't rebounding very well. Hibbert just owned them on the inside, which he shouldn't be able to do at this point of his career. I saw numerous times where he was getting 1 on 4 rebounds, which is just outlandish in the NBA. I liked Delly last night, GA looked good, Beasley was actually interesting when he was in the game. Vaughn doesn't belong on the floor, Jabari had moments, but they were just moments. Need him to establish himself more. Plumlee looked clumsy and slow. I would rather see Maker on the floor than Vaughn.

This roster is a collection of mediocre parts that don't make sense together. No playoff team here. Bad defense, mediocre at best on the boards, and still a really bad shooting team. They have let workable pieces go and replaced them with, well, crap.

What workable pieces have they let go which you think would make this team a solid contender? Knight, MCW, Ennis, Bayless, Mayo??? All of these players are serviceable back ups at best and barely, if at all, even move the needle. We have three quality young players who we can build around but unfortunately one of them is out for a significant portion of this season. We also have several decent role players signed for 3-4 years (Delly, Teletovic, Henson and Plumlee) and some promising young talent (Maker, Brogdon and to a lesser extend Vaughn) who still could develop into quality players. Our core three are not ready to compete with the Warriors, Spurs and Cavs so we should just allow them to continue developing while adding more young controllable talent in next year's draft to better our roster. Personally I would like to move either Henson/Plumlee to free up some cap space long term but otherwise we are not in a terrible place financially.

Without a Henson/Plumlee trade they are essentially capped out for the next 4-5 years, assuming a large deal coming for Jabari. They won't be able to add anyone of significance by FA

I completely agree. Even when Monroe comes off the books his cap space will be eaten up by the raises of Giannis and Jabari. So either we need to hit on our draft picks or trade one of Henson/Plumlee to gain some cap space to sign another quality free agent.

i don't necessarily agree with this. The bucks made a huge mistake by trading away Dudley and Zaza to have cap space for Monroe. Trading Knight for MCW was also a disaster. It takes time to recover from these mistakes.

Don't underestimate how much is sucks to replace Middleton with Beasley and Snell. Injuries are no excuse but it has to affect the win total this season.

I think the bucks learned the evil of their ways, but signing a locker room guy in terry and guys who fit better with the team then top FA's in Delly and Teletovic, to compliment their big 3.

There is something to be said about turning over the roster as much as the bucks have been doing, it takes some time to gel as a team.

Regarding the cap and FA's its going to continue to skyrocket so i don't think anyone can say the bucks won't have cap space to sign a big FA if they want.

I'll acknowledge the Middleton injury. I think it's similar to the Jordy Nelson injury last year, bigger effect than what you would think. But with what they have now, would not be surprised if they have the worst record in the NBA. Not predicting that, just wouldn't be surprised.

there are early signs that it may be a tough season, the bucks beat the nets by 2 and then the bulls followed up by beating them by 20.

that being said, its way too early to make statements that the bucks are going to be the worst team in the league. Do i think they are a playoff team based on the first 4 games of the season? NO. Will they atleast have a better record than the sixers, nets, magic and lakers? Yes

They may not be good. But there is almost zero chance (barring more major injuries) that they are the worst team in the league. There will be nights when the outside shots fall and the everything clicks for Giannis and Parker. Doubt they make the playoffs, but they should easily win 25-30 games I think.

They're going to have to hit on draft picks and so far...the jury is out on that. Be nice if they could even get Maker a few minutes here or there.

Is it to early for the 2017 Mock Draft? If they are in the Top 10 there are a lot of guards available. Amazingly on NBAdraft.net 9 the top 9 picks are all freshman or international players. There will be lots of fluctuations. Don't see to many good C prospects.

They have the Bucks drafting 13th and taking Grayson Allen in the 1st and Vitto Brown in the 2nd. Brown in the 2nd actually isn't that bad but my irrational hatred of Allen runs deep.

my favorite mid-late lottery guy is Lonzo Ball, 6'6" PG from UCLA

Ball is one of the best passers to come through the high school ranks in the past 20 years. Drawing comparisons to Jason Kidd, Ball has innate point guard skills that just cannot be learned. He had a tremendous senior season leading his Southern California high school team to an undefeated record. While his shot is a major work in progress and may require completely overhauling the mechanics on it, he’s got tremendous size, defensive ability and point guard skills that should allow him to be a dominant college performer right away. He should also challenge to be a lottery pick in his freshman season

Can't say I know much about him other than your write-up. But after the MCW experiment and still waiting on Giannis/Jabari to learn how to shoot, wouldn't you rather go with someone who can shoot? My guess is they end up higher than mid-lottery and supposedly this draft is loaded in Gs so hopefully someone up there is a bit better.

What exactly is Jabari Parker? Is he a shooter? A defender? What does he do well? Im not a basketball fan, so I dont know, honestly. Is he someone this team should consider trading to get someone who can shoot? Can he be packeged with a Monroe or a Henson to get a guard who can make a three?
