Mitch Ghelfi was hitting .239 when he went to bed on June 15th. He's now hitting .322

Shuckers blanked by Barons, 6-0 on Sunday

The loss forces the series' rubber match on Monday night

Biloxi Boxscore

This team is in such an awful funk since the break, and there's not really good enough pitching to put an end to it right now.

The pitching gave up 3 less runs than last night but the hitters somehow managed to put just 2 hits on the board.

Final: Palm Beach 10, Brevard County 6

Cardinals fast start dooms Manatees

By Donald Rieber, Jr., 27 Outs Baseball

Brevard County Box Score

Forgettable outings on the mound for Bubba Derby and Zach Hirsch.

Top offensive efforts courtesy of Dustin DeMuth (3-for-5, 2B) and Fidel Pena (3-for-4, 2B).

Brevard County Game Log

The original box score credited both Corey Ray (1-for-5) and Wendell Rijo (1-for-4, BB) with two hits apiece, but now each is listed with a lone hit (total team hits also changed from 13 to 11). Looks like the culprit may have been 8th inning "hits" that were changed to errors. The Palm Beach Cardinals were assessed 4 errors total for the game. While it wasn't apparently a multi-hit game the good news is Ray did extend his hitting streak to 8 games.

Brevard County Top of the 8th

Fidel Pena grounds out to first baseman Cole Lankford.

Malik Collymore strikes out swinging.

Corey Ray reaches on a fielding error by second baseman Andrew Brodbeck.

With Wendell Rijo batting, wild pitch by Davis Ward, Corey Ray to 2nd.

Wendell Rijo reaches on a fielding error by third baseman Andrew Sohn. Corey Ray scores. Wendell Rijo advances to 3rd, on a missed catch error by left fielder Thomas Spitz.

Dustin DeMuth singles on a ground ball to center fielder Vaughn Bryan. Wendell Rijo scores.

Clint Coulter grounds out, shortstop Oscar Mercado to first baseman Cole Lankford.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Rattlers Slay Dragons 16-5

Wisconsin collects season-high 19 hits for second straight victory

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Wisconsin Boxscore

Devin's Williams' strike out rate is exactly the same as last year, holding steady at 9, and the hit rate has improved. The walks however have been an issue. His rate per 9 was 3.6 last year, and is currently 4.33 after 54 innings which is why he's still giving up more runs than he should.

What a hit parade this game was with 7 of 9 Rattlers recording multi hit games. Alan Sharkey who's hit far below his talent level all season now has 2 multi hit efforts in a row. Mitch Ghelfi's offensive output so far this month is bordering on the ridiculous, he's currently hitting .478 in July. Mat Gamel's hit streak wasn't as impressive as this has been. The only thing he doesn't do is hit for enough power to be a prototypical 1B, I just don't see him being even an average MLB catcher. This streak has just been so unexpected and so prolific that I'm completely caught off guard, and if he continues to hit at even a reasonable place like prior, I'm not sure where to slot him long-term. I could see the Brewers trading him like Eric Fryer to capitalize on his season and pickup another piece.

Wisconsin Recap

If the game story wasn't fun enough for you, there's plenty of action here in the recap that wasn't covered in the story.

Final: Ogden 5, Helena 4

The only game summary available is via the Ogden site --

Ogden Hit Three Times, Four Brewers Ejected in Raptors 5-4 Win

By Emily Ferguson / Ogden Raptors

OGDEN - After snapping an 11-game road losing streak on Saturday night, the Helena Brewers (11-18) had two coaches and two players ejected in a 5-4 loss to the Ogden Raptors (12-17), leaving the tying run stranded on third base in the ninth inning.

DJ Peters hit a leadoff home run in the first inning to give Ogden a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Brock Carpenter was drilled with a 96 MPH pitch from Brewer starter Michael Petersen and later scored on an Ibandel Isabel RBI single. Peters then hit a two-out double in the second inning and scored when Cody Thomas followed suit with an RBI double, giving the Raptors a 3-0 lead.

Then in the bottom of the third, Luis Paz was pelted with a 95 MPH pitch, prompting home plate umpire Josh Sword to issue a warning to both dugouts.

One inning later, Petersen hit Carpenter again, this time with a 66 MPH curveball. Petersen and Brewers manager Nestor Corredor were immediately ejected. A long delay ensued as Corredor and Brewers pitching coach Mark Dewey argued vehemently with Sword and field umpire Trevor Danneger. Dewey was also tossed.

"It's the umpires discretion, rules are rules, and the umpire made a decision," said Raptors manager Shaun Larkin. "When he issues a warning, it has to go to both sides, that's the rule."

In his Raptors debut, Ogden starter Nolan Long (1-0) allowed just a single hit - a fourth inning double -- and zero runs in six innings to get the win. Carpenter added his second home run of the season in the bottom of the frame to extend Ogden's lead to 4-0.

"Great job mixing his pitches, throwing his off-speed pitches for strikes was huge, getting back in the counts and getting ahead in the count with off-speed pitches also," said Raptors manager Shaun Larkin, assessing Long's outing.

Following the dugout warnings, Larkin's message to Long was simple. "'You keep pitching in, you keep throwing strikes, keep sticking to our game plan, and it's not going to change anything.'"

Helena finally broke the shutout streak, plating two runs in the eighth inning to cut the deficit in half. Thomas then responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to put the Raptors up 5-2.

After a single and two walks in the top of the ninth inning, Helena loaded the bases with two outs against Tony Gonsolin (2). Lucas Erceg hit a two-run single to make it a one-run game with the tying run on third base. After the first two pitches to Nathan Rodriguez were called strikes, Nash Walters (Saturday's winning pitcher) was ejected from the dugout by Danneger. His attempt to ice Gonsolin with a slow walk to the clubhouse proved unfruitful as Gonsolin struck out Rodriguez swinging on the next pitch to close out the game.

Final: Arizona Brewers 7, Arizona White Sox 3

Maryvale Box Score

A-Crew put 17 men on base via hit, walk, and HBP, and after committing eight errors Saturday, the White Sox had three more miscues here. Brewers defense was clean.

Nice work by all three Brewer pitchers who followed Tommy John rehabber RHP Victor Diaz. In particular, take note of 19-year-old Venezuelan RHP Nelson Hernandez' game logs, outside of one early outing, he's been excellent.

21-year-old LH bat Ryan Aguilar showing diversity, the University of Arizona 31st round pick splitting his early games between first base and here, center field and doing well in the leadoff spot. RF Jay Feliciano had a monster game, two doubles and a home run (his 5th of the season in 102 at-bats, the first of those home runs coming in the DSL). In just his 2nd pro game, LF Zach Clark hit his first HR.

Maryvale Game Log

Kudos to RHP Aaron Bummer, the 2014 White Sox draft pick missed all of 2015 and is rehabbing with the AZL Sox, is also overcoming his last name, scoreless inning here. Engaged to Debbie Downer.

Sky Sox Drop Finale 7-3 In Tacoma

Five-run first dooms Sky Sox in final matchup against Rainiers

By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Linked summary includes these notes -- what was in the atmosphere Sunday?

Also in the bottom of the fifth, tempers flared after Jorge Lopez hit Pizzano with a pitch. Both Lopez and Sky Sox manager Rick Sweet were ejected by the home plate umpire. Lopez suffered his seventh loss of the season after allowing seven earned runs on nine hits while striking out three in four plus innings.

Tempers flared again in the top of the eighth. Tacoma reliever Emilio Pagan threw a pitch behind batter Josmil Pinto, and was immediately ejected by the home plate umpire. Rainiers manager Pat Listach was also ejected from the game.

Colorado Springs Box Score

Jorge Lopez has now started 16 AAA games, and made one relief appearance (behind a Corey Knebel rehab inning start). It may not seem like it, but three could actually be called OK-to-good (May 9th and 14th, June 11th, that link brings you to his game logs). I was actually surprised there were three such outings.

Colorado Springs Game Log

As noted in the game summary, reliever Rob Scahill made his Brewers' organization debut.

Please, please Josh Hader, give the AAA team something to smile about in Reno Monday night.

Speaking of Reno, how about this Sunday night headline?

NOTE: Brewers have Zach Davies, we're not quibbling anymore. How about just being happy for these two? So the Sky Sox won't see Banda on the mound this week.

Haniger, Banda lead Aces to series win

From the linked story:

Mitch Haniger put Reno on the board in the first, following a Chris Owings walk with a run-scoring triple to right-center. Anthony Banda helped his own cause in the following inning, knocking an RBI base hit to center to score Dan Rohlfing, who started a two-out rally with a double to left.

Haniger went 2-for-4 on the night, collecting his 16th multi-hit game in 35 contests with the Aces. The former Cal Poly star also posted his fourth game of three or more RBIs in an Aces uniform. Owings reached base three times and scored twice, while Banda became the eighth Reno pitcher to drive in a run this season.

Those are Mitch Ghelfi-type numbers posted by Haniger :).

From the Biloxi Sun-Herald game story --

“We didn’t hit it that well, another tough night,” Shuckers manager Mike Guerrero said. “Offensively, there have been a lot of things we’ve been working on but nothing is showing up yet.

“Hopefully, we start to come around. It has been a long year offensively. Hopefully the guys will start making some adjustments at the plate.”
