Recommended Posts

DSL Yankees2 14, DSL Brewers 4

Yankees return yesterday's 14-4 margin. Box Score

Only 4 hits by the Brewers today. 3 of them were doubles by Javier Castillo, Marcos Pinero and Moises Perez. Aaron Familia had two walks. Jenri Montas started and gave up 8 runs and 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings. He had a BAA below .200 going into today's game. So that took a hit.

Recap

DSL Brewers Top of the 7th

Luis Avalo hit by pitch.

DSL Yankees2 Bottom of the 7th

Defensive Substitution: Bryan Torres replaces catcher Luis Avalo, batting 8th, playing catcher.

Now in yesterday's game they substituted Jose Sibrian near the end of the game and he was at DH today so this may be just to rest a catcher in a blowout game.

Woodruff strikes out 10 in 1-0 win over Wahoos

Shuckers head home after win in series finale

Brandon Woodruff matched a season and career-high with 10 strikeouts on Wednesday. (Michael Krebs)

Biloxi Boxscore

So of course I'm excited by such an excellent Brandon Woodruff pitching performance. Check out his player page to see how up and down he's been since coming up to AA, just find some consistency young man! Stephen Kohlscheen found his groove again closing it out and Tristan Archer continues his fine campaign as well. I wasn't into Archer as a starter, but his stats are very impressive as a reliever.

Woodruff also had a double, and is batting .400(!) on the season, okay so it's only 10 ABs, but still, he can swing it a little bit. Jacob Nottingham (2-3) might be emerging from his slump with hits in 3 straight games and multi hit efforts in 2 of the 3. As I mentioned earlier this season it's fair to say he's below average defensively, so unless he makes vast improvement behind the plate most of his value is going to come from his bat.

Bowling Green Beats Rattlers with Three-Run Walkoff Homer

Cronenworth hits game-winner in ninth inning

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Wisconsin Boxscore

I wasn't going to say this but screw it, it's the first thing I thought following this game via gameday on my phone while watching little league baseball tonight and it's the truth, this game was a punch in the nuts.

Drake Owenby had backwards peripherals but held the Hot Rods scoreless through 5, Chase Williams followed striking out the side in the 6th and keeping his ERA a sparkling 0.00 through a handful of appearances now. Thomas Jankins had baserunners in every inning and didn't make it through the 9th, unfortunately the usually unflappable Scott Grist allowed the HR which ended the game to the only batter he's faced. I've talked more about Griep this season, but Grist has been nearly as good, just unfortunate for all involved.

Mitch Ghelfi (3-4,2B) continues his white hot streak, in fact he's approaching Mitch "Freaking" Ghelfi status. He's pushed his AVE all the way to .311 and is hitting well over .450 in his last 10 games. Sthervin Matos (2-3,HR) had the only other multi hit game as the Rattlers collected just 6 hits, he's hitting .286 over his last 10 games, he didn't get over .100 until 5/27 and was hitting .144 as recently as 6/27. Brandon Diaz continues to strike out at an alarming rate since returning from BC, going 0-3 with 3 SOs, he's had an abysmal season at both levels so far.

Final: Idaho Falls 8, Helena 2

Brewers Strand 11 in 8-2 Loss

By Craig Durham / Helena Brewers

IDAHO FALLS, ID - The beat goes on for the Helena Brewers. Another night, another disappointing defeat.

The Brewers left 11 men on base on Wednesday night, as they kicked off a seven game road trip with an 8-2 loss to the Idaho Falls Chukars in front of 3,138 at Melaleuca Field.

The Brewers trailed 2-0 after two, 5-0 after five and 8-0 after six before finally breaking through for a run in the 8th on a Yeraldy Martinez single and adding another on a Joantgel Segovia single in the 9th.

Segovia led all Brewers batters with a 4-for-4 night at the plate (plus a walk), but he was picked off twice - once in the 1st and once in the 3rd - to help the Chukars build and maintain an early advantage.

Karsen Lindell (1-3) was tagged with the loss, though an effective night saw him allow two earned runs on six hits in four innings. Matt Smith made his Pioneer League debut for the Brewers in the 6th inning, and after a rocky start he retired nine of the last 12 men he faced, including five strikeouts.

Alex Luna (3-0) remained perfect for Idaho Falls, shutting out the Brewers over six innings. He struck out five and did not issue a walk.

Before the Brewers scored in the 8th, they had been outscored 26-0 in 19 innings going back to Monday's doubleheader with Billings.

Helena will look to right the ship on Thursday when they send Rodrigo Benoit (0-0, 5.06) to the mound opposite Jace Vines (0-1, 7.15). First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 PM and all the action can be heard live on Helena's Gold Country 98.5FM and online at helenabrewers.net.

Nice!

Pensacola Manager Pat Kelly said the Blue Wahoo hitters struggled with Biloxi's Brandon Woodruff’s fastballs that reached 98 mph Wednesday.

“We haven’t see that kind of velocity from a starter,” Kelly said. “(The hitters) thought they saw the ball good but it was up and down, in and out, it wasn’t constantly in any one spot.”

Final (16 innings): Brevard County 4, Jupiter 3

DeMuth blasts walk-off homer in 16th inning

By Donald Rieber, Jr., 27 Outs Baseball

***

Brevard County Box Score

Dustin DeMuth (3-for-6, 2B, HR) has been an offensive bright spot for Brevard County recently and came through as the hero in this one.

Corey Ray (2-for-7) recorded his first professional stolen base. Unfortunately, as documented in the game story Ray had trouble with a routine fly ball that would have ended the game with two outs in the 9th inning. The ball that Ray lost in the Space Coast Stadium twilight allowed the tying run to score and extended the game an additional 2 hours and 9 minutes.

Nice to read there were some strong defensive efforts from the Manatees infielders led by multiple nice plays from newcomer 2B Wendell Rijo. On the offensive end Rijo did not fair as well (0-for-7).

In a game where Brevard County sent almost 60 players to the plate they drew just 1 walk and struck out 14 times.

Manatees hurlers included Eric Hanhold, Kender Villegas, Jon Olczak, and Josh Uhen. Each went no less than 3.0 innings and over 16 innings combined to allow 12 hits and 3 earned runs while walking 9 and striking out 9.

Att: 829... That was the published attendance, wonder how many of those folks stuck around long enough to see the Manatees capture the walk-off win?

Brevard County Game Log

A lot of reading material to go through in the game log, but the final chapter is too good not to read first...

Brevard County Bottom of the 16th

  • Wendell Rijo pops out to third baseman Avery Romero.
Dustin DeMuth homers (6) on a line drive to center field.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Gee, this makes it even more excruciating for the Rattlers --

Jake Cronenworth swung on the first pitch and hit a fly ball into the Wisconsin bullpen in right, just over a leaping attempt by Sthervin Matos.

"I'm just looking for a good pitch to hit and extending the inning," Cronenworth said. "I put a good swing on it and luckily it got out just by a little bit. I thought he was going to catch it. I think the wind helped out a little bit.

Today's Baseball America Prospect Report includes Brandon Woodruff. It also features a player (Chris Paddack) the Brewers were rumored to be discussing with the Marlins before his recent trade to San Diego as well as a pair of intriguing Red Sox prospects.

Brandon Woodruff, rhp, Brewers. The Brewers’ No. 31 prospect entering the season matched a career high Wednesday with 10 strikeouts as Double-A Biloxi blanked Pensacola (Reds) 1-0. Woodruff allowed just three hits and a walk over seven innings, throwing 67 of 99 pitches for strikes. After dominating at high Class A, Woodruff had struggled a bit at Double-A, but said getting ahead in the count was the key to success Wednesday. Overall, Woodruff is 8-7, 3.06 with 108 strikeouts in 100 innings.
