Link Report for Saturday 7/9 - 4th Round RHP Corbin Burnes makes Wisconsin debut

Brewer Fanatic Staff

Want to thank WV Brew, willing to return to Link Report duty with the DSL, thanks so much!

Just something to watch, normally a 4th inning exit like this means an injury on the way to first base or a removal after venting some disappointment with the at-bat.

Final: Helena 2, Billings 1, ten innings

Brewers Walk Off in Extras

Helena Tops Billings 2-1 in 10

HELENA, MT - With Lucas Erceg on third and two outs in the bottom of the 10th, Demi Orimoloye hit a hard ground ball to third. Caleb Wright set his feet and fired to first, but the throw pulled Montrell Marshall off the bag. As Orimoloye ducked away from the tag, Erceg touched home plate to give the Helena Brewers their first walk-off win of the year, 2-1 over the Billings Mustangs on Saturday night.

The win evened the head to head season series at three games apiece, and brought the Brewers to within two games of the Pioneer League North co-division leaders Billings and Great Falls.

Helena scored the game's first run on a bases loaded walk in the first inning, but Billings tied it up in the bottom of the seventh on a single to center that skipped by Joantgel Segovia and allowed Hector Vargas to score from first.

The story tonight was pitching, especially the Brewers duo of Jordan Desguin and Wuilder Rodriguez (1-0).

Desguin went six innings for the second time this season, allowing just four hits and a walk. He struck out seven batters, the most of any Brewers pitcher in an outing this season, and has now fanned 27 in 26 innings of work.

Rodriguez earned the victory, scattering four hits, two walks and the unearned run across a four-inning outing that lowered his ERA to 2.55.

Having won two of the three to start the five game homestand, the Brewers will look to make it two in a row over Billings when the two teams meet on Sunday at 1:05 PM (2:05 Central). Nash Walters will make his Pioneer League debut for the Brewers opposite Scott Moss, who will be making his pro debut for the Mustangs.

Erceg helps Brewers nip Billings in extras

Ryan Collingwood, Helena Independent Record

The Helena Brewers have been a mercurial ball club since the onset of Pioneer League play.

But third baseman Lucas Erceg, a second-round draft pick a month ago, has been a model of consistency.

Erceg scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning Saturday night when the Brewers nipped the Billings Mustangs 2-1 at Kindrick Legion Field.

Erceg, who went 3 for 4 and was also walked, poked a single to center on a full count and advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt and pop fly.

When Demi Orimoloye ripped a two-out grounder to Billings third baseman Colby Wright, an errant throw to first baseman Kontrell Marshall forced him to leave the bag to make the catch, and Erceg crossed the dish for the deciding run.

"For me, leading off the bottom of the 10th, my only job and only mindset was to just get on base, no matter what," said Erceg, who is now hitting .405. "Then we had really good team execution with (Nathan Rodriguez's) sac bunt and (Wes Wilson's) sac fly. Great fundamentals there."

Erceg, who registered his fifth steal of the season, also scored the Brewers' other run after advancing from third when Orimoloye was walked with the bases loaded in the first inning.

This was Erceg's 11th multi-hit game in 17 outings.

"I've just been working with my hitting coach (Liu Rodriguez), and he's basically just been telling me to stick with my approach and stick with the process, because that's all it is as a hitter," Erceg said.

Helena (10-12) stranded 10 runners in a game that saw the Mustangs (12-10) use seven pitchers.

The Brewers used just one hurler through six innings, Jordan Desguin, who threw a gem.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound right-hander from Florida Gulf Coast University didn't yield a run, gave up just four hits, one walk and struck out seven.

When Desguin sat down in the seventh, reliever Wuilder Rodriguez gave up consecutive base hits, an error in center field giving the Mustangs their lone run.

Rodriguez settled down and earned the win after giving up four hits in four innings with no walks and two strikeouts.

Billings was paced by shortstop Hector Vargas' 2 for 4 night and by starting pitcher Andrew Jordan, who gave up just one run and two hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Wow, not a single earned run through ten innings for the dynamic Desguin/Rodriguez duo this evening;

Final: Arizona Indians 8, Arizona Brewers 1

Weather: 109 degrees, clear.

Wind: 9 mph, Out to CF.

Maryvale Box Score

With his club down 5-1, undrafted Canadian free agent RHP Jeremy Newton allowed three runs on four hits in the 8th in his debut, but hey, you're now a professional, sir; 18-year-old Adam Lind deal RHP Carlos Herrera's four-inning line is "OK", no walks (one HBP), three K's...

Maryvale Game Log

The A-Crew only managed two hits, one a double by second baseman Trey York, as the 22-year-old East Tennessee State 9th round pick is sporting a nice .294/.431/.431 line, seven doubles in 51 AB's, and more walks (13) than K's (11). He's the lone bat that is an obvious Helena candidate when the opportunity arises, at least for now.

After a pretty bad start overall in terms of prospect growth, things certainly seem to be looking up with player performances, still plenty of guys who have work today, but if Ponce could keep up this and give us something to really get excited about that would help a lot.

Corbin Burnes is off to a nice start in Wisconsin:

4 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K #TRats

I was at that game last night (sang the National Anthem with my old Sweet Adeline Chorus) and he looked good. Unfortunately fielding errors did the T-Rats in after he left the game.
