From the Transaction Thread --

Angel Ventura promoted to Biloxi. Freddie Peralta to Brevard.

Ventura is the TBD for Biloxi tonight.

Also, it's apparent, at least for now, that the Twitterverse tweet we linked to in Friday's report indicating Helena RHP Trey Supak is in Wisconsin, should have indicated one of the other of the promoted Corbin Burnes (from Maryvale) or Zack Brown (from Helena) instead.

If it wasn't for bad luck, the Manatees would have none at all. Marauders tie it with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth and win it on a walk-off single in the 13th. Ponce has his 12 strikeout performance go for naught.

Great updates, guys.

I'm surprised they moved Peralta up to BC before they moved Diplan. Diplan is still at Wisconsin, right? Or did I miss his promotion?

I was positive the TV crew said tonight that both Diplan and Peralta were promoted, but I've been unable to find anything on Diplan, Ereckison didn't mention it in the post game interview either. For the record I'm not in favor of promoting Diplan this season given the current status of his control and command. They already pushed Medeiros up before I feel he was ready and I'd rather they not push Diplan up simply because his ERA and peripherals are nice and shiny.

I'd much rather Diplan works on his control where he can have success without it in WI and be promoted next year, then if he struggles so be it.

Ponce, wow. Really great to see a top prospect other than Diplan dominate like that, it's been a while.

Also, Tyrone Taylor keeps hitting, great to see he was able to mentally deal with a horrible start of the season and turn it around.

Final (13 innings): Bradenton 2, Brevard County 1

Ponce fans 12, Marauders walk-off in 13

Brevard County Box Score

Holy cow Cody Ponce, 6.0 innings with only 3 hits and 0 runs is very nice, but 12 strikeouts and 0 walks is the kind of stuff Link Report legends are made of. Of Ponce's 73 pitches thrown, 52 were strikes.

Nice to see Freddy Peralta join the Manatees staff, he did labor a bit over his 2.1 innings throwing 52 pitches and allowing 2 hits, 1 run, 3 walks with 1 strike out.

During July this has started to sound like a broken record, Dustin DeMuth (3-for-4, 2B, BB) had his 6th straight multi-hit game and stretched his hitting streak to 7 games. DeMuth is 15-for-24 (.625) over the past six games.

Corey Ray (2-for-6) had his first multi-hit game as a professional, but unfortunately was thrown out at second base in his first career stolen base attempt.

Brevard County Game Log

The Manatees losses continue to pile up (currently at 5 straight), but there are plenty of intriguing players in Brevard County to keep our attention on a nightly basis despite the team's struggles.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Contrary to what some people here claim, the Brewers have actually been pretty aggressive in their assignments and promotions. Most of the top prospects are young for the level they're playing at. Arcia, Nottingham, Medeiros, Isan Diaz, Peralta and others. Plus the aggressive assignment of Ray to BC.

I don't know much, but seems that pitchers should be more complete before they advance to BC. Medeiros should have started in Appleton, I agree with that.

Rattlers fall 3-2 to Peoria

Late lead disappears

Corbin Burnes' predraft scouting report can be found here. Of the 2 scouting reports posted there I find the MLB.com version to be more accurate after 4 innings. I was disappointed by Zack Brown's 8th inning, he basically gave the game away with Wild Pitches, and I don't recall the last time I saw a professional player advance 2 bases on a single WP.

Brandon Diaz made a fantastic diving in catch in CF, then later had the 2 run double, but he's swinging off his back foot constantly, which bothered me when Prince Fielder started doing that after his 50 HR season, and if I thought it didn't make sense for a powerful 1B it certainly doesn't make sense for a smallish CF. I would guess that's probably the reason he's hitting just .158 and striking out so much (22 of 38 ABs already in relief of Trent Clark), he didn't do that last season. He's always had a higher strike out rate (83 in 283 ABs for 2015), but not this bad.

The Rattler hitters were constantly upset with the home plate umpire, I didn't start watching till the end of the 3rd, so I might have missed a catalyst earlier in the game, but there were quite a few instances where T-Rats struck out looking and had quite a bit to say as they walked back to the dugout.

Shuckers drop fifth straight in opener at Pensacola

Nick Ramirez was 2-for-3 and blasted his 10th homer of the season

Nick Ramirez hit his 10th homer of the season on Saturday night in the seventh inning. (Jason Clark)

Biloxi Boxscore

Angel Ventura didn't pitch exceedingly well, my expectation of him would be to start a tad slow and quickly improve, that's what I've seen him from at each level so far.

Tyrone Taylor (2-4,2B) has multi hit games in 6 of his last 10, which is awesome considering how many people were leaving him for dead earlier in the season. He now has the exact same AVE (.246) as Brett Phillips, obviously without the power of Phillips so Taylor's OPS is just .655, but he's also only struck out 51 times in contrast to Phillips' 98. All things being equal I lean power, but all things are not equal here so this CF of the future thing is a much different race than it appeared earlier this season. Brett has the higher ceiling but I've always been fond of Tyrone. This will be an interesting battle moving forward...

Nick Ramirez is playing much better of late, with 3 multi hit games in his last 4. I would really like to combine him with Garrett Cooper to make a fairly projectable 1B, but unfortunately life isn't a video game and I can't edit Ramirez' contact rate or Cooper's power.

Manatees' Ponce fans career-high 12

Brewers No. 8 prospect gives up three hits over six scoreless innings

By Michael Leboff / MiLB.com

In a start in which Brewers No. 8 prospect Cody Ponce set career highs with 12 strikeouts and six scoreless innings, he was most satisfied with the fact that he didn't walk a single batter for the third straight outing.

"My goal is to walk the least amount of people I can," he said. "Minimizing walks is something I strive for every time. Some people would say the 12 strikeouts is the best part of my outing, but to me it was the no walks. It's an organizational rule to limit the walks as much as we can."

In his seventh start of the season, Ponce allowed three hits on Saturday before Class A Advanced Brevard County fell, to Bradenton, 2-1, in 13 innings at McKechnie Field. It was the second straight scoreless outing for the 2015 second-round pick, who posted five zeros against Dunedin on July 4.

"I talked with my catcher, Dustin Houle, and we went with what worked last time," Ponce said. "We established the fastball low and away and low and in. Then we worked off that with my off-speed stuff."

After beginning his outing with a 1-2-3 first and working around a single in both the second and the third, Ponce put on a clinic in the fourth and fifth, striking out six straight Marauders.

"I felt really strong in the beginning, but as I got deeper, I felt even better and more comfortable," the 22-year-old right-hander said. "We had a lot of trust in my changeup tonight and it served as a good setup pitch when I was behind in the count, and then the slider was the wipeout pitch. I have to give Dustin the credit tonight, I don't think I shook him off one time, and I trust my defense and that makes the strikeouts a lot easier to come by."

Ponce was able to work around a leadoff single to get through the sixth for the first time in his career. The Cal Poly Pomona product was efficient, throwing 52 of 73 pitches for strikes.

"My goal every night is to go all nine, no matter what," he said. "I think that's every starting pitcher's goal and tonight, six was my limit, and I got through it. I wanted to go one more, but that's the nature of the beast. You always want to keep going."

After spending the first two months of the season in extended spring training to recover from forearm fatigue, Ponce made his season debut on June 8. He's pitched to a 3.24 ERA and 1.00 WHIP while fanning 29 and walking three in 26 innings.

"I've worked with my teammate, Kodi Medeiros, a lot on living over the zone," he said. "That's what they teach here; we call it living over the fat part of the plate. He's really helped me catch up to these guys and stay on track after I had a little bump in the road with the forearm fatigue."
