Aaron Hill traded to Boston Red Sox for RHP Aaron Wilkerson & INF Wendell Rijo (Latest: Rivera recalled to take Hill's spot, post 70)

yadiel rivera recalled to take aaron hill's roster spot. the club has thirteen position players for the time being.

looks like garin cecchini may have to wait a bit longer for a potential recall.

Cecchini is less deserving than Pinto or Wren. Rivera, like Wilkins, only makes sense because they have options.

cecchini is currently on an optional assignment to the minor leagues, meaning he can be sent back and forth all season. he has burned his final option year and will enter 2017 spring training with no minor league options remaining.

I'm actually a fan of Cechinni and I don't think he really deserves a call up. He's doing okay, but nothing special. I think he just needs more time to try and get his approach down. Hopefully it can happen.

On the positive side, Garin has really cut down on the strikeouts and gotten back to more of his style of hitting. It's resulted in okay production, but not what you want from a corner guy. If you look deeper into his numbers, you'll find he's pretty bad against lefties (he's left handed). Example, this year he is hitting .277 vs righties, but .219 against lefties. It's kind of like that for the last few years for him.

He does play 3B and 1B (plus he's played some OF), so the versatility is nice. I could see him in a role where he might get 20-30 starts at both positions as a lefty bat if you have more fringy players like Perez and Middlebrooks as your starters. But I think he still has to step up a bit more before you consider any such thing.

Sounds like Wilkerson is in a Mike Fiers type of pitcher. Him and a young guy with some possibilities is a decent return for 3 months of Hill. Beats what we thought he could bring back at the end of April.

Now if only Garza would throw a no hitter next time out to become trade worthy.

Defending Rijo's production, based on his current age is reasonable, prudent, and previously acknowledged by myself in this thread.
That's my fault. I hadn't read much of the thread before that. I saw that and immediately jumped the gun because I thought it was just a completely misguided stance.

Perhaps you would have phrased it differently, but I have no problem making the point that a player who is hitting the way Rijo was in AA has a major issue left to overcome. When I said I'm much more intrigued by the pitcher at this point, I meant that.
I mean, Corey Ray is hitting under .100 so far in A+ ball, a lower level than Rijo was at, but I highly doubt we're going to rush to judgement and call him a non-prospect like you implied with Rijo. Age needs to be taken into account when looking at these prospects. Wilkerson is a crafty 27 year old who is likely a AAAA player. He's far less the prospect than Rijo is.

My hope, of course, is for Rijo to relax at Brevard, let his talent take over, and return to AA when he's better equipped for it. My question is - why would Boston leave him there for 51 games, when he was so clearly overmatched?
Probably for the same reason we left Monte Harrison in A ball for 46 games when he was so clearly overmatched.

I just don't get why the Brewers think A and AA guys mean anything?? they don't...unless they plan on the rebuild lasting 5-6 years or more and if they think fans are going to wait that long...they are sadly mistaken. 3 years tops, that better be it. I have no patience for losing...at anything. Never have, never will. You should always be trying to win. It's like Bucks fans, that want them to get lottery picks for the next couple of years still...because unproven talent will help you win faster?? The brewers think they are acquiring all these assets..for what?? As trade chips for other "possible" talent?? AAA and the major league level is what gets you better, and gets you the ammo to acquire better talent. They should be solely focused on those two levels right now. Who cares about A and AA ballers??
I'm sorry but I just can't agree with this. At all. Forcing the rebuild is exactly how you become the meddling franchise we became after 2011. And targeting AAA and MLB players is simply not what you do in a rebuild. This isn't the NFL or NBA. Typically, players in A and AA ball can become Major Leaguers within 3 years. AAA is for the option types that you bring up when you have injuries. Guys that aren't good enough for the MLB but are at least capable of spot playing. You don't garner AAA assets because they're not assets at all.

We're a small market team. You absolutely need to be patient. Win-now mode is what got the Bucks in trouble with fan interest because they were doing exactly what you just implied. You don't force this rebuild. Period.

It never fails. Every time I go away for a few days with little to no access or time to access the internet, something big happens with the Brewers, usually a trade.

Now accepting donations for my next vacation to be taken before July 31st. Although I will be pretty busy at a conference starting tomorrow through Wednesday...
