Since a long-ago four-game win streak, the D-Crew has lost nine of ten...

DSL Brewers Box Score

Brewer pitchers hit six batters, walked six others, and oh yeah, allowed 21 hits. All that was in just 7.2 innings, due to the rain.

Amazing restraint by Tigers pitchers, no HBP's back the other way.

Rattlers win 6-2 over Kernels

Diplan tosses five scoreless innings; Ghelfi with three hits and three runs scored

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Wisconsin Boxscore

Marcos Diplan is a fascinating study in "effectively wild", he rarely has a completely dominating game, always too many hits or walks, but often ends up with a spectacular result on the whole. Over the years I've talked quite a bit about "quality strikes", like with Jungmann and Medeiros for example, and I concede people may believe that I'm being overly hateful, but I'm truly of the mind set that if you aren't able to hit spots MLB hitters will eventually figure you out. Pitchers like that who lack control with a couple of plus secondary pitches (K-Rod would be an example), can still have success in limited roles, but if you aren't able to hit spots you aren't a MLB starting pitcher. Of course I know there are some extremely talented pitchers who couldn't locate and had decent careers such as Edwin Jackson, but those players are few and far between, and I don't base my assessments off of extreme cases in either direction. Certainly pitchers in A ball have plenty of time to refine their control and command however I'm going to remain a skeptic about any pitcher until he can put up back to back statistically proper seasons and have legitimate stuff to go with it.

Nate Griep is easily my favorite reliever below AA, 'nuff said.

Isan Diaz (2-4,HR,2B) has been downright beastly of late, the double and homer came in his first 2 ABs. Mitch Ghelfi (3-4,2 2B) has been on fire as well hitting in 8 of his 10 last games. Brandon Diaz was dropped all the way to the 9th spot and responded with a 2B, it would be nice to see him get going and finish the year strong.

Miscues cost Shuckers in 4-1 loss to Suns

Garrett Cooper sees 25-game on-base and 12-game hitting streak come to an end

Tyrone Taylor was 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to a season-high six games. (M.K. Krebs)

Biloxi Boxscore

Well I discussed Taylor Jungmann's control in my WI post, and of course that was before I looked at this boxscore, and truthfully before I even knew he was starting today, so *sigh*. I don't really have anything to add regarding Jungmann than I've already said numerous times in the past, it's just too bad really. Brett Lee has had a very rough 2016 campaign to this point.

On the good news side of things Tyrone Taylor remains hot and tallied an outfield assist while Javier Betancourt jumped back over the Mendoza line.

Jacob Nottingham (0-4. 4 SOs) had a miserable game on both ends with 2 errors, he's up to 11 on the season in addition to 16 passed balls. His CS% is also <30%, bottom line he's just not strong defensively so he's going to have to provide most of his value with the bat.

Brevard County Box Score

Zach Hirsch appeared in his first game since June 24th and pitched 2.1 innings without allowing a baserunner. Hirsch has put together some solid numbers with Brevard County including a 1.09 WHIP over 43.0 innings and has recorded 35 strikeouts to just 8 walks.

Story of the game from the Manatees side was Corey Ray's first professional hit, but he also made his debut in center field. He was the only Sea Cow outfielder without an error as both RF Clint Coulter and LF Omar Garcia committed fielding blunders.

Suns take advantage of rough night for Shuckers, 4-1

Patrick Magee, Biloxi Sun-Herald

BILOXI – Tuesday night's game is one the Shuckers would like to soon forget.

The Jacksonville Suns took advantage of four errors and eight walks issued by Biloxi pitchers in a 4-1 victory at MGM Park before a crowd of 1,865.

The win evened the five-game series at 1-1 after Biloxi won the opener 5-1 on Monday night.

Biloxi had been playing clean ball of late, but that proved to not be the case Tuesday.

“It's just one of those days that the defense let us down,” Shuckers manager Mike Guerrero said. “That hasn't been happening much. We'll come back and get it tomorrow.”

The Shuckers dropped to 5-7 in the second half in the Southern League South, one game behind first-place Mobile. The Suns also stand at 5-7.

Shuckers starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann is trying to work his way back to the big leagues after a successful stint with the Milwaukee Brewers last season, but his control issues came to light again Tuesday.

The right-hander struggled badly to find the plate early in the game, walking six in the first three innings. He managed to settle down in the fourth and fifth, limiting Jacksonville to a pair of runs (one earned) on three hits.

Jungmann (0-1) walked six and struck out four in five innings. He threw 85 pitches, 41 strikes.

“He's got to get his feel back out there,” Guerrero said. “It's his second outing after a break. He's just on his way back. We're trying to build him up because he's got to get a feel back for the strike zone where he wants to throw the fastball, breaking ball and in any count, pitching in and out. Once he finds his release point, he's going to be fine.”

Garrett Cooper's 12-game hitting streak came to a close along with his run of reaching base in 25 consecutive contests, a Biloxi club record.

Shuckers catcher Jacob Nottingham committed a pair of throwing errors. Second baseman Javier Betancourt and third baseman Gabriel Noriega both added errors of their own.

Betancourt had a nice night at the plate as he continues to work his way back from his mid-season struggles. He finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, knocking in the lone run of the game for the Shuckers in the third inning.

“I've been working so hard,” Betancourt said. “It's just kind of paying off right now. I feel pretty happy that I can see the ball. I'm making good contact right now, but I'm still working.”

Tyrone Taylor continued his hot hitting for Biloxi, going 2-for-4 to push his hitting streak to six games.

Of the four men who scored for Jacksonville Tuesday night, three reached base on walks and the fourth got on base in the fifth on a throwing error by Noriega.

Jacksonville received a nice start from Patrick Johnson, who allowed one run on four hits in six innings. He struck out six and walked none to improve to 4-4.

Center fielder Yefri Perez was the lone Sun with multiple hits, going 2-for-5 with a run scored.

The Shuckers will host the Suns at 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday in game three of the series. Left-hander Wei-Chung Wang, who has been Biloxi's most consistent starter with a 3-3 mark and 3.75 ERA, will start the game. The Suns will go with left-hander Eric Jokish (0-0, 0.00).

Via NewsOK.com --

Zach Walters rarely eats sugar on a game day, but for some reason he felt like Tuesday was a good day to change his routine.

Six blueberry donuts and a stomach ache actually turned into a good thing.

Walters hit a walk-off home run with two outs in the ninth to lift the Oklahoma City Dodgers to a 6-5 win over Colorado Springs at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark for a sixth straight victory, completing an impressive four-hit night at the plate.

“Honestly, my stomach was hurting me,” Walters said. “Anything I could do to help today. I just wanted to stay simple today. It was a good day.

“But I don't want to eat that many donuts again because my stomach still hurts.”

Final: Billings 3, Helena 2, 11 innings

Five Errors Cost Brewers in Billings

Losing Streak Reaches Six Games

By Craig Durham / Helena Brewers

***

In addition to Craig's suggested write-up read above, there's this recap on the road game via the Helena Independent Record --

On Monday, there was seemingly nothing the Helena Brewers could do to stem the Billings Mustangs’ offensive assault.

The home team thrilled the home fans with an incredible 20 runs in handing the Brewers their fifth consecutive loss.

On Tuesday, however, runs were far tougher to come by but the Mustangs (11-7) still managed to grind out a 3-2, 11-inning victory at Dehler Park in Billings. It was the first extra-inning contest of the season for the Brewers.

The heartbreaker came in a game where Helena three times escaped a bases-loaded inning and held a one-run lead from the fourth to the bottom of the ninth. In the end, it was their own mistakes -- the visitors recorded two of their five errors in the bottom of the 11th -- that cost the Brewers (8-10) and pushed their skid to six games.

After being sat down in order in the top of the 11th, Helena saw the Mustangs put runners on first and second in the bottom of the frame with those two errors. With no outs, the runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch.

The game was then ended when Billings’ Daniel Sweet laced a liner into left field, driving in the winning run.

The Mustangs struck first in the game’s opening minutes, plating one with an RBI single to center in the bottom of the first. But that was the last scoring folks at Dehler would see until the fourth inning.

After Lucas Erceg grounded out to start the inning, Wes Wilson hammered his first triple of the season into center field. He came home when Ronnie Gideon followed with a double to left, tying the game at one run apiece. It didn’t stay deadlocked long, however. After a Yerald Martinez strikeout, Demi Orimoloye connected on the second triple of the frame, scoring Gideon and putting the visitors in front.

Helena was in a good spot to pad the lead a bit in the ninth, where after a pair of walks sandwiched around a wild pitch, the Brewers had runners on first and second. But a ground-out ended the inning.

In the bottom half of the ninth, lead-off hitter Colby Wright walked and was pushed to second with a sacrifice bunt.

Hector Vargas was able to reach first on a throwing error, giving Billings runners on the corners with just one out and a shot to right tied the game at 2.

Colton Cross relieved Shawn Clowers after a walk loaded the bases and got out of the inning with back-to-back strikeouts, sending it to extras.

Helena will attempt to snap their losing streak in the series finale at Billings, set for Wednesday, before returning home for a two-game set with Missoula and a trio of games against the Mustangs.

Today's Baseball America Prospect Report includes Isan Diaz...

Isan Diaz, ss, Brewers. Diaz, who hit a career-high 13 homers last year, hit his ninth Tuesday to back Marcos Diplan in low Class A Wisconsin’s 6-2 win at Cedar Rapids (Twins). Diaz, acquired in the deal that sent Jean Segura to Arizona, makes plenty of hard contact despite his average size thanks to an uncanny ability to find the barrel consistently.

Hard contact is an apt way to explain Diaz, the ball often explodes off his bat. Looking at his splits, since June 1st Diaz is batting .330 (37-for-112) including 12 doubles, 1 triple, and 6 home runs.
