Final: Arizona Reds 3, Arizona Brewers 0

Weather: 99 degrees, sunny.

Wind: 1 mph, Varies.

First pitch: 9:59 AM.

Maryvale Box Score

Darn you, MiLB. The initial box score listed Mario Feliciano in the lineup, the 75th overall pick in this year's draft for his pro debut. But that later changed to Jay Feliciano, who best we can tell, is no relation.

Eclectic bunch on the Maryvale mound, from 18-year-old RHP Carlos Herrera (Lind trade), to 21-year-old 4th round RHP Corbin Burnes, and late-round RHP's Chase Williams and Andrew Vernon. The four combined to fan 11 and walk four.

Maryvale Game Log

No reason given for LF Nic Pierre's early departure after he played defense in the top of the 4th.

Youngster Jomar Cortes played for the first time since June 24th.

Wasted chances in the 1st and 8th innings...

Full Brevard County game story coming a little later, but below is a Twitter recap of each at-bat of Corey Ray's debut as shared by Manatees reporter Donald Rieber, Jr. (@TeesReport).

At-Bat #1

@TeesReport: Ray flies out on the first professional pitch he sees. Good swing, but flies to left.

At-Bat #2

@TeesReport: Ray K's on a 3-2 count. Took a couple close pitches that were called balls. Did swing at strike 3 and slapped the bat in frustration.

At-Bat #3

@TeesReport: Ray hits into an FC, beat the throw to first on DP attempt. Manatees get a single from Garcia, but nothing more.

At-Bat #4

@TeesReport: Corey Ray batting w/the bases loaded and one out. Fouls first pitch off.

@TeesReport: Ray hits it to center, deep enough to drive in his first professional run and give the #BCManatees their first run of the game. 1-0.

Kernels rally to beat Rattlers 6-5

Wisconsin led 5-0, but drop tough decision at Cedar Rapids

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Wisconsin Boxscore

I probably have unrealistically high expectations of the Miguel Diaz/Freddy Peralta combo so when they actually lose a start, I'm completely shocked. Like the rest of the weekend I was following on my phone and thought the game was in the bag when the Rattlers went up 5-0, but I should know better than that as well.

I'm pretty sure the Rattlers collected 8 hits in the first 3 innings and then only 2 over the course of the rest of the game. Those first 3 innings were a blast though with Troy Stokes (3-4,BB), Isan Diaz (2-4.3B.BB), and Jake Gatewood (2-4,2B,BB) all posting multi hit games. Stokes and David Denson have been moving in opposite directions for a while now as Denson's AVE has fallen below .250 and Stokes has climbed over .220. Unfortunately Brandon Diaz has gotten off to an extremely slow start for the Rattlers as well after his demotion from BC.

Final: Brevard County 3, Dunedin 0

Fourth of July crowd gets glimpse of Manatees future

By Donald Rieber, Jr., 27 Outs Baseball

Brevard County Box Score

It's a winning streak! This match-up featured the team with the highest OPS (.715) in the Florida State League in Dunedin versus a Brevard County team with the league's lowest OPS (.614). Despite facing the offensively stout Blue Jays the Manatees hurlers, Cody Ponce and Angel Ventura, combined on an impressive 3-hit shut out. Ponce went 5.0 innings allowing just 2 hits and 0 walks. Ponce struck out 5 and improved his WHIP to 1.16 over his six appearances this season. Ventura was also very effective pitching the final 4.0 innings and allowing 1 hit, 1 walk, and striking out 4.

Dustin DeMuth and George Iskenderian both went 2-for-4 and each now sport identical .253 batting averages.

As the whole country celebrated Independence Day lesser corners of the baseball universe also celebrated Corey Ray Day. Ray's professional debut was strictly with the bat as he served as the Brevard County designated hitter. His four at-bats were documented earlier in the Link Report, but expect a full interview/story on Corey's debut game to also be posted soon by Donald Rieber, Jr.

Brevard County Game Log

A scoreless game heading into the bottom of the 7th inning, Corey Ray's sacrifice fly to center field broke the scoreless tie. The Manatees then proceeded to plate two additional runs on Blake Allemand's single.

Brevard County Bottom of the 7th

  • George Iskenderian singles on a ground ball to right fielder Josh Almonte.
    Dustin Houle strikes out swinging.
With Jose Cuas batting, George Iskenderian steals (5) 2nd base.
    Jose Cuas walks.
Omar Garcia walks. George Iskenderian to 3rd. Jose Cuas to 2nd.
Corey Ray out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Anthony Alford. George Iskenderian scores. Jose Cuas to 3rd.
With Blake Allemand batting, Omar Garcia steals (6) 2nd base.
Blake Allemand singles on a line drive to left fielder Andrew Guillotte. Jose Cuas scores. Omar Garcia scores. Blake Allemand to 2nd on the throw.
Dustin DeMuth grounds out, second baseman Dickie Joe Thon to first baseman Ryan McBroom.

Thanks for the summaries, guys. They are much appreciated and one of the best things on this site.

Great to hear about Ponce.

As for Ray, I'm sure he was anxious. From what I saw of him at Louisville, he needs to work on chasing bad pitches and understanding the strike zone.

Shuckers take down Suns on Independence Day

Cooper and Taylor homer as Hall earns quality start and victory

Brooks Hall earned the win and his second-straight quality start on Monday night (Michael Krebs)

Biloxi Boxscore

Brooks Hall has been pitching better of late, he's been successful when he's kept the walks down this season. Today he even contributed offensively with a lead off double in the 4 run 5th! The bullpen was awesome, check the boxscore for their individual statistics on the season.

Gabriel Noriega hasn't hit all that much, but his hits have been timely, and he did record 3 in today's action. Tyrone Taylor continues to show some life as he's now hitting .357 over his last 10.

So, it turns out, the DSL Brewers did not complete their suspended game, and their schedule still does not indicate when that might happen, but they did play the regularly scheduled affair --

Final: DSL Rockies 6, DSL Brewers 4

Cerveceritos fall to 9-15...

DSL Brewers Box Score

Five starts now for 19-year-old 2nd year Venezuelan RHP Maiker Pinto, and after a sterling opening outing, it's been four rough ones.

DSL Brewers Game Log

A new Brewer pops out of nowhere -- and hits cleanup.

Dominican native LF Antonio Perez is listed as an 18-year-old RH bat with good size, 6'2", 200. Perez was 1-for-5 in his debut with a single, as all eight Brewers hits were of the one-base variety.

17-year-old infielder Luis Manon returned to action for the first time since June 24th. Fellow 17-year-old infielder Aaron Familia has now been idle since June 27th.

As in past years, we pretty much wait to see if any statistical stars develop on the island. It's been a slow go thus far in 2016.

Was hoping Zach Brown would follow the Brandon Woodruff path of a power arm that would excel with a change of scenery to pro ball, but it hasn't happened yet.

Also, tough day for Jack Finnegan, a appearance with a 270.00 ERA is tough to regress

Final: Oklahoma City 7, Colorado Springs 2

First-place Dodgers not a team you want to stumble against...

Sky Sox Taken Down 7-2 By Dodgers

Dodgers take early lead and never look back to win series opener

Colorado Springs Box Score

RHP Jorge Lopez' road WHIP of 1.88 is nearly as ugly as his home WHIP of 1.97. Honestly, the only good things we can say about Lopez right now is that he's only 23 and he has two more years with a minor league option remaining.

Orlando Arcia was 0-for-3 with three K's and a walk, guessing some frustration is setting in there, maybe move him out of the three-hole for a while?

AUDIO via Saturday's Sky Sox pre-game show: For the first time I can remember, LHP Craig Breslow talks in some detail about his release from the Brewers' organization within his third pro season. Of course, after an indy league stint that led to an affiliated Padre contract, Breslow has had a pretty solid career that peaked in Boston's championship 2013 campaign.

Part One was linked on June 27th --

AUDIO: Sky Sox pre-game with Timber Rattlers Hitting Coach Al LeBoeuf (Part One)

LeBoeuf discusses his health background, which has been documented before, but is still a fascinating listen in audio form. LeBoeuf is filling in for a couple of weeks at the AAA level for Bob Skube.

We don't learn why Skube is out, apparently that was discussed in Part Two, to be aired later this season, perhaps even after Skube's return.

Final: Billings 20, Helena 7

Helena Box Score

Billings' Jose Siri hits for the cycle

Helena Game Log

In his prior outing, RHP Jack Finnegan got four outs, all by strikeout. That did not happen Monday. RHP Santos Saldivar allowed three of Finnegan's baserunners to score, capping off Jack's forgettable line, all squeezed into 39 pitches.

Starter Zack Brown hit two batters in addition to issuing three walks as part of his undistinguished start.

Maybe the deflection on the HBP injured catcher Nathan Rodriguez here?

Billings Bottom of the 2nd

Montrell Marshall doubles (3) on a line drive to right fielder Yerald Martinez.

John Sansone hit by pitch.

Daniel Sweet strikes out swinging.

Colby Wright hit by pitch. Montrell Marshall to 3rd. John Sansone to 2nd.

Defensive Substitution: Cooper Hummel replaces catcher Nathan Rodriguez, batting 8th, playing catcher.

Cassidy Brown walks. Montrell Marshall scores. John Sansone to 3rd. Colby Wright to 2nd.

Hector Vargas pops out to catcher Cooper Hummel in foul territory.

Beau Amaral strikes out swinging.

Four Brewers had two-hit games, and Jonathan Oquendo, as the DH here, reached in all four trips.
