Osprey hammer five homers to win series finale

Powered by five home runs by five different players, the Missoula Osprey came from behind to beat the host Helena Brewers 10-3 in Pioneer League action at Kindrick Legion Field on Wednesday.

Going yard with solo shots for the Osprey were Ramon Hernandez in the fourth inning, Jose Herrera in the fifth, and Ryan January in the ninth. ; Billy Endris connected on a two-run bomb in the seventh, as did Luis Silverio in the eighth.

Helena went 2-1 over the three-game home stand versus the Garden City crew, and slips to 8-5 on the year, while Missoula improves to 4-9.

The Brewers took an early 2-0 lead when third baseman Wes Wilson stroked a two-out, two-run double in the opening frame.

The home team then went up 3-0 in the next inning, with Juan Ortiz scoring on an Osprey throwing error.

In the fourth stanza, Helena’s Caleb Whalen sent a high fly to deep left field, but was robbed of at least a double when Silverio went high and snagged the ball nine or 10 feet off the ground, against the fence.

Next, Missoula's offense began to shine. The visitors plated three runs in the fifth and pulled ahead 4-3 on Herrera’s homer, and a two-run double by Jasrado Chisholm.

In the bottom of the sixth, with two out and Wilson on second, Osprey center fielder Billy Endris made a diving, run-saving catch of Cooper Hummel’s drive to right-center.

The visitors out-hit the Brewers 13-6, led by Silverio at 3 for 4 -- finishing with a single, homer and double, a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Teammates Chisholm and Hernandez both had a pair of base knocks.

Luis Madero started for Missoula and pitched four innings, allowing three runs before giving way to relievers Dean Jackson (three innings) and Tyler Keele (two innings).

Jackson and Keele allowed just three total hits and struck out a combined five, while shutting out the Brewers over the final six frames. Jackson was credited with the win.

Wilson, a 6-foot-3, 195-pounder from High Point, North Carolina, paced the local nine offensively, going 3 for 5 with a double and a couple RBIs.

Helena used four pitchers, with starter Nattino Diplan going 4 2/3 stanzas and taking the loss. Jack Finnegan was the first of three relievers and did not allow a hit, a run or a walk during his 1 1/3 inning appearance, fanning four Osprey hitters.

Next up, the Brewers travel to Missoula for another there-game stretch, running Thursday through Saturday.

Helena Bottom of the 6th

Weston Wilson singles on a line drive to left fielder Luis Silverio.

Yerald Martinez flies out to left fielder Luis Silverio.

With Demi Orimoloye batting, Weston Wilson steals (2) 2nd base.

Demi Orimoloye pops out to first baseman Ramon Hernandez.

Cooper Hummel flies out to center fielder Billy Endris.

Missoula Top of the 7th

Defensive Substitution: Ronnie Gideon replaces right fielder Demi Orimoloye, batting 7th, playing first base.

Hopefully Demi (0-for-3, .602 OPS) was pulled for a frustration incident and not because of injury.

There's not an obvious outfield candidate on the Helena roster to come up for the injured Carlos Belonis in Wisconsin.

was burns taken out do to a pitch limit?

What's a college pitcher drafted in round 4 doing in AZ league anyway? Shouldn't he be in Helena?

When I saw the game was called after 5, I thought "slaughter rule in pro baseball"? Guessing they knew weather was looming and wanted to get next pitcher work.

It's probably more likely a sign that he'll be headed for Wisconsin in the near future. The Helena staff was largely filled before Burnes signed, and if they regard him as a polished pitcher, it shouldn't matter whether he gets a few innings under his belt in Maryvale or Helena. It might have just been easier to not bother sending him to the Pioneer League for a few weeks.

He's also pitched 105.2 innings this year already, and I bet they have an innings limit in mind somewhere in the 140-150 range. That's just a handful of good starts away, so his innings will be limited likely for the remainder of the season.
