From Yahoo's Jeff Passan's "Prospect Heat Check" --

21. Josh Hader, SP, Triple-A, Milwaukee

Speaking of, Hader once was an Astro. Now he's the Brewers' best pitching prospect, an unorthodox left-hander who piles up strikeouts. It's still too early to say whether the Brewers have found long-term rotation pieces in Zach Davies and Junior Guerra, but Hader is the sort who will make room for himself. First he needs to brave the altitude of Colorado Springs and survive the Pacific Coast League. Then, come next season – he's not yet on the 40-man roster, so a September call-up is less likely than not – he'll join the rotation at some point and see whether his funk can translate.

22. Marcos Diplan, SP, Low-A, Milwaukee

At 12.3 strikeouts per nine, Diplan punches out even more hitters than Hader. Why isn't he more highly touted? Well, size for one: Diplan stands only 6-foot. As does Red Sox uberprospect Anderson Espinoza. So let the crowding of the Diplan bandwagon begin here. The Rangers saw enough to give him $1.3 million to sign before shipping him off to the Brewers in the Yovani Gallardo deal. Diplan is still just 19, and one scout said: “Nobody, not even Hader, has his upside.”

15th rounder Scott Serigstad making his pro debut on the bump tonight as Helena's game two starter. Peterson and Supak both pitched well in game one.

Clark and Diaz with jacks for the Rattlers but some truly awful defense has left the offense with a steep hill to climb.

Carlos Herrera making his second start of the season for the Baby Brewers.

I'll get my 2 teams in the AM, my brother and I framed my sister's basement today and I've fallen asleep 4 times trying to watch the T-Rat game.

Umm yikes just saw how many errors Gatewood and Diaz have(42 combined). I know errors aren't a ton, but that is bad...really bad. Anyone know what Gatewood's errors have mostly been? He was way better in the error department last year at SS so I imagine throwing errors are the culprit.

Would suck to have him move off of 3B for 1B.

It's minor leagues...don't worry. Didn't Jeter once have like 30 or 40 in a season? As the Brewers recently said, his footwork and arm angles get off, but they think he's playing excellent defense now

Final: DSL Yankees #2 Squad 6, DSL Brewers 3

DSL Brewers Box Score

Tied at 2-2, a three-run Yankee 3rd inning happened; the D-Crew couldn't recover from that.

Team RISP: 2-for-15.

Team LOB: 11.

Brewers had their chances; 17-year-old Venezuelan leadoff SS Luis Avila was on base four times, and now sports a .300/.367/.300 line, all 21 hits are singles, one would think at least one base knock would find a gap; first error for bonus baby catcher Jose Sibrian, that's promising, although we had highlighted some passed balls in earlier games.

The two players we highlighted Friday as leaving with likely injuries, SS Luis Manon and 1B Josue Herrera, did not play.

DSL Brewers Game Log

Shaky start for 20-year-old 2nd year RHP Joaquin De La Cruz - 3 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K; 19-year-old rookie RH reliever Daniel Acosta has struglled with control in his six appearances, ten walks in five innings.

Colorado Springs Box Score

Very productive top four in the order, on base ten times plus Michael Reed's sacrifice fly; on a Will Middlebrooks designated hitter day, Yadiel Rivera played third base - Garin Cecchini has played 12 games at third vs. 49 at first base.

Final: Arizona Padres 9, Arizona Brewers 2

Weather: 107 degrees, partly cloudy.

Wind: 7 mph, R to L.

Team falls to 2-3, four errors here added to the ugliness...

Maryvale Box Score

Two of those errors were by starting RHP Carlos Herrera (Adam Lind trade), both on pickoff throws. 34th round RHP Matt Smith (Georgetown) allowed one run in his three innings of work, and 22-year-old rookie RHP Miguel Sanchez made his stateside debut after just two DSL appearances (2 IP, 3 H, 2 R). The three hurlers combined for an impressive 10-to-0 K-to-BB line, despite the final score.

Maryvale Game Log

Four Brewers reached base twice, yet the four combined for just two hits - CF Jose Gomez, 2B Trey York, DH Zach Taylor, and C Johel Atencio, who added a sacrifice fly.

Through five games, the Brewers are last in the 14-team Arizona League with a .174 average and .512 OPS. Still early, but hopefully not a sign of the summer to come.

Final, Game One: Helena 5, Great Falls 2

Game Summary via the Helena site --

The Brewers came out of the gate hot, scoring twice in the first and never looking back in a 5-2 victory. Ronnie Gideon's RBI single in the top of the first put the Brewers up 2-0, and a strong start from Michael Petersen made it stand up.

Petersen allowed two runs in four innings of work, recording a season high five strikeouts in the process, and got run support throughout the game.

After Great Falls cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second, Demi Orimoloye crushed his first Pioneer League home run in the bottom of the fourth - a two run blast - to put the Brewers ahead 4-1.

That was all the offense the Brewers would need as Trey Supak (1-0) followed Petersen with three scoreless innings of dominant relief work, earning his first victory as a member of the Milwaukee organization. Supak allowed just two hits, did not walk a batter and fanned four in his second outing of the year.

Helena Game One Box Score

At some point, we'll learn the backstory behind 6'7" 17th round (2015) RHP Michael Petersen (with an "sen", not "son"). He was born in the U.K. and his middle name is "Kenechukwu". Drafted four times and still not a sure Brewers sign last year (here's the draft history), there was one article that proved very helpful during the wait for a signature last summer, check that out here. Nice tandem for this seven-inning game with RHP Trey Supak, who now has two matching glorious scoreless three-inning outings. Supak only needed 22 pitches, and threw only three balls outside the strike zone in the three innings.

Helena Game One Game Log

Six Brewers had a single base hit, four were singles. Joantgel Segovia doubled and as you saw above, this --

Helena Top of the 4th

Juan Ortiz flies out to center fielder Aaron Schnurbusch.

Ronnie Gideon grounds out, shortstop Mitch Roman to first baseman Corey Zangari.

Weston Wilson singles on a line drive to left fielder Jameson Fisher.

Demi Orimoloye homers (1) on a line drive to left field. Weston Wilson scores.

***

Great Falls Bottom of the 4th

Yerald Martinez called out on strikes.

Helena Brewers left fielder Yerald Martinez ejected by HP umpire Trevor Danneger.

Can't do that, young man. Guess who the manager sat in Game Two...

Final, Game Two: Great Falls 11, Helena 4

H-Crew now 6-3 on the season...

Game Summary via the Helena site --

As in the first game of the doubleheader, Helena set the tone early, grabbing a 2-0 in the top of the second on back-to-back one-out singles. That was where the similarities would end, however, as Great Falls came roaring to life in the bottom of the inning.

Scott Serigstad (0-1) walked the leadoff man to start the second, and after striking out Nate Nolan in the next at-bat things got ugly. The next four Voyagers recorded hits to chase Serigstad from the game, turning the 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead.

Santos Saldivar replaced Serigstad, striking out Jameson Fisher for the second out of the inning, but a two-out Brady Conlan double plated two more, putting the Voyagers ahead 5-2. They would add another and take a 6-2 lead into the third.

Helena responded with two in the top of the third - including Juan Ortiz's first home run of the year - but 6-4 would as close as the Brewers would get as the Voyagers went on to score the game's last five runs.

Ryan Hinchley (1-0) earned the victory, as he was the first of three Great Falls relievers to keep the Brewers off the scoreboard.

The fourth and final game of the series in Great Falls will be the last head-to-head matchup between these two teams in the first half. Helena currently leads the season series four games to three.

Thomas Jankins will be on the mound for the Brewers opposite Fernando Gallegos for the Voyagers. First pitch at Centene Stadium is scheduled for 1:00PM.

Helena Game Two Box Score

None of the four pitchers used shined here, and 21-year-old 15th round (Cal State-Fullerton) RHP Scott Serigstad didn't have a start to remember, get them next time, young man.

Helena Game Two Game Log

First baseman Juan Ortiz homered and singled, and his 1.119 OPS after 31 at-bats is a thing of beauty. Second baseman Franly Mallen (pronounced "My'-en") doubled, singled, drove in two, and is off to a 10-for-23 start.

SS Gilbert Lara is just 6-for-32 (two walks, ten K's), and is looking for his first extra-base hit of 2016.

We'll note this in the Transaction Thread with a bit more detail, but you'll see this in the Manatee update later this AM --

That was the end of Bubba Derby’s night, as he gave way to Junior Rincon after 4.1 innings pitched and seven hits, five coming in that fifth inning. Derby allowed three earned runs, struck out five and walked one. He threw 93 pitches, 63 strikes. Rincon did a great job to kill the rally, as he struck out Green and Kyle Martin, to get out of the bases loaded jam. “He did a great job and he earned a promotion to Double-A too,” said Manager Joe Ayrault of Rincon. “He’s flying out tomorrow. He’s been doing a great job for us and we’ll definitely miss him. I’m real happy for him.”
