South pounds North in Southern League All-Star Game

by Brandon Shields, Special to the Biloxi Sun-Herald

PEARL — Tuesday was just another night at the ball park for Brett Phillips.

The Biloxi Shucker outfielder went 1-for-3 with a run scored in the South's 5-1 win over the North in the Southern League All-Star Game at Trustmark Park in front of an announced crowd of 4,172.

This was Phillips third all-star game.

"It was a lot of fun. To go out there and play with a bunch of guys you play against every night is a lot of fun and over the last couple of days you actually get to know people," Phillips said. "It was an absolute honor to get selected for this game for the third time. The guys played great and I enjoyed it."

All of the offense came in the fifth inning for the South All-Stars and it came on two hits from Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Brandon Dixon had an RBI infield single down the third base line and Phillip Ervin hit a towering grand slam to left center field to cap the South’s scoring for the night.

Biloxi first baseman Garrett Cooper went 1-for-2 with a single to center field and made a nice play at first base on a chopped grounder that stole a hit from Montgomery's Casey Gillaspie.

Biloxi catcher Jacob Nottingham went 0-for-2 at the plate, but did throw out Montgomery's Willy Adames at second base trying to steal in the second inning.

Pitcher Stephen Peterson pitched a perfect sixth inning. Tristan Archer did not play.

Mississippi shortstop and Atlanta Braves super prospect Dansby Swanson led the South with two hits. Adames and fellow Biscuit Kean Wong led the North with two hits.

Former Arkansas ace, Brewers farmhand, and current Blue Wahoo Barrett Astin earned the win with a scoreless fifth.

The Shuckers have Wednesday off before opening the second half Thursday with a 7:10 PM first pitch against the Montgomery Biscuits at MGM Park.

BILLINGS -- Juan Ortiz continued his early season hitting surge and the Helena Brewers downed the Billings Mustangs 10-4 Tuesday night at Dehler Park.

Ortiz went 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles, a triple and three RBIs, pacing a Brewers team which racked up a season-high 18 hits.

The Dominican first baseman has recorded a hit in all of five of Helena's games and is now a combined 10 for 21 at the plate.

Second-round draft pick Lucas Erceg also tripled for the Brewers (4-1), knocking in a pair of base runners. He also recorded a steal. Demi Orimoloye also tripled, giving the Brewers three in the rout.

Brewers outfielders Joantgel Segovia and Yeraldy Martinez each went 3 for 5.

A four-run, four-hit ninth inning and a four-hit, three-run seventh inning boosted Helena in its first road game of the season.

Defensively, starter Karsen Lindell and reliever Wuilder Rodriguez handcuffed the Mustangs (3-2).

Rodriguez, who earned the win, gave up no runs and two hits in four innings of work and had a pair of strikeouts. Lindell also went four innings, giving up two runs and two hits.

The Brewers conclude their two-game series at Billings at 7:05 PM Wednesday (8:05 Central) at Dehler Park.

Helena Box Score

Neither team web site posts a game summary, so we rely on the account above for this road game, which was actually very helpful.

My goodness, what a pretty box score, check out all the crooked numbers in all the right places.

First baseman Juan Ortiz is just 21, and talk about player development -- two years in the DSL, two years in Maryvale, you'll notice at that link the decision to bring him stateside was questionable, his second island season was actually very ugly (.563 OPS).

I was able to attend a Timber Rattlers game this past weekend, and came away very impressed with Isan Diaz. He just seemed to have a great feel for the game, and for lack of a better way to identify it he just "looked the part". I know it is easy to gush about a guy when he hits two doubles (

of first 2B and
of second 2B), but aside from just that I was very impressed with his abilities on the field and the way he carried himself. I'm not a scout obviously, but his bat speed appeared very quick. His swing seemed smooth and he really squared some of the balls. Even his ground outs to first base weren't weak contact. There weren't a lot of challenging plays in the field at SS during the game I attended, but he seems constantly engaged, constantly interacting with guys both in the field and in the dugout. It is hard to pinpoint what "it" is, but he looks to me to be a guy that has great maturity on the field for a player his age. I don't want to make too far of a leap here after seeing just one game in-person, but it is fair to say I am very excited to watch him progress in the Brewers organization.
Not just “at Night” anymore.

: Footage taken by 2080 Baseball's Mauricio Rubio from a previous game gives a nice 2-minute visual of Isan Diaz and some of the things outlined in the Baseball Prospectus screenshot linked above (including the noted head shake).
