With Maryvale going live Monday, I'd like to place a callout to any past or never-before Link Reporters to assist here. It does not have to be every night, even occasionally will help.

The DSL kids (normally available in the early evening), Colorado Springs (even if you take just their Central Time Zone road games), and Helena are all up for grabs.

Thanks to any and all willing to jump in.

You can post your interest in this thread, send me a private note via the forum's messaging system here, or email me at jgoulart "at" brewerfan.net.

Huge thanks to Seth and Daron for all their current efforts.

Rattlers close out first half with a win

Wisconsin edges Beloit 6-5 at Pohlman Field

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Wisconsin Boxscore

So the T-Rats close out the first half 2 games below .500 and I think they've played below their talent level most of the year, so I'm looking for this team to ascend in the second half. Marcos Diplan was strong again allowing 1 run over his 4 innings but the bullpen and defense faltered in the back half of the game. However the Grim Grieper came on to close it out and preserve the victory.

David Denson (2-3,HR,BB) had slumped at the beginning of the month but closes the 1st half on a 5 game hitting streak, it's really unfortunate he doesn't have a defensive position on this Rattler team. Mitch Ghelfi (2-4,HR) also closes the first half on a nice hot streak with 3 straight multi hit games.

Shuckers split doubleheader with Suns, fall short in first-half race

Pensacola edges Shuckers by 1.5 games in South Division first half

Jorge Ortega picked up his first win and fifth quality start on Sunday in game two (Michael Krebs)

Biloxi Boxscore

MH pointed out Brandon Woodruff coming back on short rest and it didn't work out extremely well but 3 relievers combined to keep it a 1 run game. Unfortunately the Shuckers managed just 3 hits in Game 1 and didn't do anything offensively torpedoing any hope Biloxi had of catching Pensacola.

Biloxi Game 2 Boxscore

Jorge Ortega returned to his early season line pitching 6 innings with 4 hits, 0 walks, and 2 strike outs, the only run he gave up was of the unearned variety.

Fortunately the hitting was much better in game 2 with the pressure off and once again Garrett Cooper (2-3,2B) figured prominently in the offense. He finishes the first half with a .319/.376/.455/.831 slash line... of his 61 hits 18 were doubles, he hit 2 home runs and 1 triple. Let me head off the doubles turning into HRs talk, that's just not realistic unless he adds more strength, he's already 25 years old, he's not going to naturally develop more power now. However it's a fantastic minor league hitting performance none the less.

Final: Helena 5, Great Falls 4

Brewers hold off Voyagers to stay perfect

Ryan Collingwood, Helena Independent Record

Great Falls' rallying opportunities were ample.

Whenever the door opened for Helena's Pioneer League rival, though, it was quickly slammed shut.

The Brewers held off the Voyagers in a 5-4 decision at Kindrick Legion Field on Sunday afternoon to claim the four-game series, a contest which saw the visitors strand 11 runners -- four in the final two frames.

Unlike in its first two wins, Helena, which improved to 3-0, never trailed.

Starting pitcher Trey Supak, a second-round draft pick a year ago with the Pittsburgh Pirates, had a sterling debut in the Brewers organization.

Supak allowed no runs, two hits and no walks in three innings of work and struck out three. Michael Petersen earned the win after giving up one run and three hits in relief in the next three innings.

"It went pretty well," said Supak, who signed a $1 million contract with the Pirates last summer before being traded. "I established my fastball in the first few innings and kept hitters off balance. (The defense) was making some really good plays behind me."

Helena used four arms in the win, with Rodrigo Benoit earning the save.

Second baseman Franly Mallen paced the Brewers at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Caleb Whalen, a 38th-round pick out of the University of Portland making his professional debut, recorded a pair of RBIs.

Whalen's college teammate, 18th-round pick Cooper Hummel, got the Brewers' offense going early with a double in the second inning, his first professional at-bat. A single by Mallen brought in Hummel, and a rope by Joantgel Segovia off the first baseman's glove allowed Mallen to score, giving Helena a 2-0 lead.

Helena had a 3-0 cushion in the sixth inning, but Great Falls chipped away at the deficit. The Voyagers (0-3) had three straight hits in the seventh, with an RBI single by Alex Call cutting the lead to 3-2.

An RBI single by Juan Ortiz in the seventh extended the Brewers' lead, but the Voyagers tacked one more on when Aaron Schnurbusch, who had an RBI single in the sixth, scored on a fielder's choice to make it a 4-3 contest.

A single by Demi Orimoloye led to a run when Whalen knocked him in from third on a fielder's choice.

Benoit, who gave up five hits and two runs, got out jams in both the eighth and ninth innings, also tallying three strikeouts.

Mallen liked his team's resolve, despite stranding nine runners.

"The hitters and pitchers communicated a lot and helped each other out," Mallen said. "Always supporting each other, and when one doesn't do their job, the hitters pick them up and vice versa; so it's a good, solid team we have."

The Brewers' second reliever Sunday, Santos Saldivar, who gave up one run and two hits in his Brewers debut, was the post-game translator for Mallen, a Dominican.

"It felt good, going 3 for 4 is what my goal is every game. I hope to do that every game," Mallen said. "It felt amazing playing in front of a big crowd and that pushed me to be as good as I was today."

The Voyagers' Alex Call and Jameson Fisher -- third- and fourth-round draft picks by the White Sox two weeks ago -- each went 2 for 5.

Both teams meet again at 7:05 PM Monday (8:05 Central) at Kindrick Legion Field to conclude the four-game, season-opening series.

Notes: Lucas Erceg, the 46th overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft, made his debut with the Brewers in Helena on Sunday, going 1 for 4 with a stolen base. ... First baseman Juan Ortiz is off to a nice start in his three games, going 6 for 12 with two doubles and four RBIs.

Helena Box Score

Lucas Erceg, DH'ing here, and catcher Cooper Hummel both scored hits in their first pro games. RHP Santos Saldivar's first pro mound outing was scoreless, and he stranded two inherited runners. LF Caleb Whalen was 0-for-3, but drove in two big runs.
