From Josh Flickinger's Beloit Daily News Thursday game story --

The Snappers couldn’t get anything going against Brewers prospect Freddy Peralta, who allowed just one hit in six sterling innings. Peralta, who just turned 20 years old, was one of three young hurlers acquired by the Brewers from the Mariners in exchange for first baseman Adam Lind.

Peralta’s ERA dropped to a solid 2.92, and Timber Rattlers pitching coach Gary Lucas said although Peralta isn’t a fireballler, he’s been extremely effective thus far.

“He’s sneaky fast,” Lucas said. “He’s got a really fast hand, meaning the ball gets out of his hand quickly and hitters have a hard time recognizing it. He throws a little across his body, and there’s some deception to him. He’s such a young guy and is already an All-Star.”

Final: DSL Rockies 10, DSL Brewers 5

DSL Brewers Box Score

An uncharacteristicly sloppy game for the DSL Crew, four errors, although only one of the ten runs allowed was unearned; 2nd year pro 18-year-old Panamanian RHP Deymar Alvarado made his season debut, allowing two runs in one inning; 22-years-old but a rookie, RHP Miguel Sanchez had a stellar outing - 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K. The two relievers who followed struggled, as you'll see in the box. Brewer pitchers combined to throw six wild pitches.

DSL Brewers Game Log

Brewers put 16 runners on base via hit, walk, or HBP, so there are numbers to peruse. Infielder Javier Castillo singled four times in five at-bats, splitting time at 2B and 3B. LF Yorki Franco had been 0-for-12 in his pro career before doubling in his first at-bat, Franco would later add two more base knocks.

As noted above, 17-year-old Venezuelan rookie catcher Moises Perez clubbed two home runs. The right-handed bat is listed at 6'1", 190. Both HR's were hit to left-center.

Cooper's late bases clearing double lifts Shuckers

Biloxi stays alive in South Division title race with victory

Garrett Cooper extended his hitting streak to eight games with the bases clearing double in the eighth inning. (Jason Clark)

Biloxi Boxscore

The first 3 Biloxi pitchers entered the game with ERAs over 4 and yet they only allowed a single run, a job well done which allowed the comeback in the 8th. Gage Smith had a nice debut with the Shuckers and Daniel Tillman continues to get the job done as the closer.

Garrett Cooper (1-4,2B) is probably the only hitter I'd promote in the entire system, I'd let him play 1B with the Sky Sox but I doubt that's going to happen.

Snappers Double Up Rattlers, 4-2

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Wisconsin Boxscore

Miguel Diaz was victimized by a couple of Isan Diaz misplays in a row, only 1 scored an error, but he turned the dial up a couple of notches after giving up the run. He pitches better angry, which I think is a good thing in an athlete (will take too long to explain that theory here), and upped my stock for him. His innings are being limited right now intentionally, so there's nothing to worry about with 2 relatively low pitch counts in a row. Quintin Torres-Costa has no in-between, he's either awesome or struggles., it's nearly half way through the season and I'm still not sure what to make of him.

Mitch Ghelfi (2-4) posted his 2nd consecutive multi-hit game and it was nice to see (listen to actually) Sthervin Matos (2-4,2 2B) who's struggled mightily all year notch his first 2 XBHs. The Rattlers actually outhit Beloit 8-6 but didn't string enough hits together to make the difference, though without the defensive miscues this is at worst a 2-2 game and in extra innings.

Bases-loaded hit sends Shuckers past Suns

By Vito Stellino, Jacksonville.com

Cleanup hitter Garrett Cooper of the Biloxi Shuckers got two shots with the bases loaded Friday night, and that was one too many for the Suns.

The Suns escaped in the third inning when he ripped a line drive to leftfielder Austin Dean, who doubled Johnny Davis off second.

But in the eighth inning, Cooper sliced a line drive down the right-field line that rolled to the wall as all three runners scored to break a 1-1 tie and give the Shuckers a 4-1 victory over the Suns before 6,610 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

“I came up earlier with the bases loaded and hit the ball hard to the leftfielder,” Cooper said. “I got that one pretty well, and the ball stayed up right at the guy, and we didn’t come out with any runs, so I felt I had to redeem myself. All you can do is move on to your next at-bat. I got an 0-1 curveball [from reliever Tyler Higgins] that stayed up a little bit. You find any ways to get the runners in.”

The loss snapped a three-game Suns winning streak.

The most significant aspect of the game for the Suns probably was that Austin Brice made his debut as a reliever after making the All-Star team a starter. He struck out the side in the sixth inning and retired all six batters he faced.

“He was outstanding,” Suns manager Dave Berg said of Brice. “He threw everything for strikes, and he looked really relaxed out there.”

Berg said Brice will remain in the bullpen because the Miami Marlins want to look at him as a reliever.

Of Higgins, Berg said, “He’s been scuffling as of late. He’s got to get ahead of guys and put guys away. The last few outings haven’t been so great.”

Of Cooper’s game winning hit, Berg said, “It was a breaking ball in the zone and you put it up in the zone and you’re going to get hurt.”

After making his last three appearances in relief, Hunter Adkins got his second start of the year for the Suns and blanked the Shuckers for the first three innings before coming out after he gave up a one-out homer to Nick Ramirez in the fourth.

“He made one mistake [the homer to Ramirez),” Berg said. “He gave us all of his pitches he had available [75 with 51 strikes].”

After the homer, Berg brought in reliever Scott Lyman, who retired all five batters he faced.

For the Shuckers, Tristan Archer made his first start of the year and blanked the Suns for three innings while allowing two hits.

The Suns tied the score in the fifth inning against reliever Javi Salas. Francisco Arcia hit a ground-rule double. After Lyman popped out trying to bunt, Yefri Perez singled to center to score Arcia and tie the game at 1-1.

Perez stole second and J.T. Riddle walked, but Dean grounded into a double play to end the inning. Dean also grounded out to end the seventh inning and strand Perez at third. Perez walked and got to third on two passed balls.

The Suns had one last chance in the ninth inning, when they got two on with one out. But Riddle flied out, and Dean struck out, leaving the Suns’ best hitter, Moises Sierra, in the on-deck circle.

The Brewers scored five runs on five hits and never relinquished the lead. Yerald Martinez’s double plated Gilbert Lara and Juan Ortiz to even the score at 2-all. Winner, Winner

Five-run fourth vaults Brewers past Voyagers on opening night

Ryan Collingwood, Helena Independent Record

A season ago, catcher Charles Galiano sent a towering shot over the left-field wall in Great Falls, a blast he and the rest of his Helena Brewers cohorts unequivocally thought was a home run, the first of his career.

Despite sailing noticeably right of the foul pole, it was ruled foul.

When the Fordham University alum sent a pitch over the center-field wall at Kindrick Legion Field in Friday's night's season opener, he left no doubt.

Galiano's two-run homer -- now officially his first -- capped a five-run, fourth inning as the Brewers downed the Great Falls Voyagers 6-4 in front of an opening-day crowd of 1,550.

"It was really important for us to put up that big spot. It was pretty much a game-changer," Galiano said of the fourth-inning hitting deluge. "Hitting a home run in that situation was great, especially in front of the home crowd. It was packed."

First baseman Juan Ortiz spearheaded the Brewers' offense, going 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Shortstop Gilbert Lara, the sixth-ranked player in the Brewers' farm system, went 2 for 4.

In a game that saw a combined 21 hits between the two clubs, Brewers reliever Shawn Clowers earned the win. He gave up two runs and six hits in three innings of work, striking out three and didn't register a walk.

Colton Cross, who gave up no runs and two hits in two innings, was credited with the save.

For the first three and a half innings, the Brewers' Pioneer League rival appeared to be in control.

The Brewers' starting pitcher, right-hander Gentry Fortuno, had a near flawless first inning, but proceeded to give up four hits, two runs, walked three batters over the next three before Clowers came in for relief. Fortuno finished the night with three strikeouts.

An RBI double by Sam Dexter in his first professional at-bat and an RBI single by Nathan Nolan gave the Voyagers a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Voyagers starter Max Beatty was dealing early, too, giving up just two hits and a run in three frames.

When the fourth stanza came around, though, the Brewers shelled Beatty, tallying five runs off five hits.

A single by Lara and Ortiz's second double of the night set up a two-RBI double by Yeraldy Martinez. Designated hitter Nathan Rodriguez, getting his first professional action, roped an RBI double of his own. Galiano then put the capper on the inning with a two-run homer to give the Brewers a cushion they wouldn't relinquish.

"They read the pitcher in the first three innings, then in the fourth inning they changed their approach," Brewers first-year manager Nestor Corredor said. "They tried to hit the ball to the gap, we knew we could get a couple hits together and make a big rally.

Ortiz followed up with an RBI single in the fifth inning to give the Brewers their sixth and final run.

His consistency didn't come as a surprise to Corredor.

"Ortiz is a guy we're expecting a lot of good things from," he said. "He's been playing very well lately and improving a lot. Today, he just showed what he is able to do. He can hit the ball hard and be opportunistic with singles and try to get RBIs."

Dexter, Alex Call, Jameson Fisher and Brady Conlon all had two hits for the Voyagers, who outhit the Brewers 11-10.

Call, a center fielder playing in his first pro game, was a third-round pick for the White Sox's organization last week. He signed a $700,000 contract out of Ball State.

The Voyagers started seven 2016 draft picks Friday night, while the Brewers started just one: Rodriguez, a 21st-round catcher out of Cypress Junior College.

Brewers 2016 second-round pick Lucas Erceg, the 46th overall selection, is a third baseman on Helena's roster but didn't play as he reported to the team later in the week after signing a $1,150,000 contract. He will play sometime in the next two games, Corredor said.

The Brewers take on the Voyagers again at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central) Saturday at Kindrick Legion Field.
