The 2017 MLB Draft Thread (#9 Pick + #34 & #46)

Patrick,

Was wondering if you would mind sharing some of your thoughts on rising Oregon Friday night Ace David Peterson....I'm close with his future mother-in-law, so I've been trying to track down third party info on him for this year's draft.

Patrick touched on Peterson a few posts above - reply #387.

I was JUST about to edit my post....sorry about that, hadn't read as far as #387 when I asked the question. His future mother-in-law is a very matter of fact person about people and is incredibly successful in a field that requires you to read people. She GLOWS when talking about David. I saw his 20 Strikeout game against ASU, it was impressive. His walk to strikeout rate is insane this year....he made some minor tweaks to his mechanics since last season and the results have shown. Have to love the physical size, would imagine he could add a tick or two to his velocity and will be able to sustain it.

Can't say I'm a huge fan of the Jo Adell pick. If that's the board I'd much rather take a chance on Baz, Faedo, or Haseley who seems to have more upside than people give him credit for. If that is the board come June I'm curious to see who you all would choose at 9.

Agreed.

"The question with Adell has always been if he can make consistent quality contact"

Not looking for another Ray or Clark at this point.

If Haseley can play CF I take him over Adell in a heartbeat. If you have to go HS for some reason, I'd prefer Baz. Or Peterson. I think in this scenario I go Peterson and see if we can squeeze a few hundred thousand under slot to get someone who is sliding at 34.

Seeing as both are consensus top 100 type prospects, I'll take as many as we can get.

That is just stupidity on that person part you have a god gifted talent and then you do something to get you thrown off the team.

It's mind boggling to me how many times you hear of crazy behavior before drafts in any major sport.

Well in his case it sounds like he is always an idiot so not like it is a new development.

Let's see if that holds true in the post-season rankings.

It will be interesting what kind of price tag Boras will now float on Romero. He let Funkhouser take a huge loss by refusing to lower demands. And that was without the off the field concerns. What leverage does he have? I assume he has to sit out a year to go to another D1 school so that about leaves D2/NAIA or independent ball. Its hard to believe he can rebuild his stock at those levels better than it is now.

Taking HS pitchers their ranking on Baseball America's top 200 Id want the first three picks to come from these names only. I wish I could sit and watch video like i did in '15 to pick the top I liked. My favorites are excelling

Note Pint and Groome were the two favorites last year and Groome slid down. So dont let Gore escape your minds.

Edit Add. I'd take 6'1-6'5 in higher consideration vs shorter or taller. 6'2-6'4 are especially looked at.

I know Ill get creamed with the idea, but reality is trading for these guys next year and beyond because we failed to draft them isnt as likely because the Brewers are filling up so young with team control. That Lucroy, Jeffress, Thornburg arent sitting on this team with 1-2years of team control

Quote from Stearns:

“Drafting for major-league need is not a wise strategy,” he said. “We have to recognize the major-league team is likely to change prior to any draft pick reaching the major leagues. We really do focus on trying to draft the best major-leaguers available.

“When you draft a player, there are so many things that can happen before that player reaches the major-league level. That’s true for first-rounders and true for 30th-rounders. There’s a lot of time in there, a lot of changing circumstances, both for the individual player and the team.

“Trying to predict what those changing circumstances are going to be is not the best course of action. I don’t see us doing that.”

So you want a pitcher? Lol BPA regardless of position always always always. Groome also had makeup concerns last year. I've read nothing but glowing reports on Gore.

Since 08, here is the list of high school pitchers in the top 10 or the first one taken. Certainly several of them are decent pitchers once you get past their Tommy Johns (Wheeler, Taillon, Bundy) or prospects, but not exactly a list of franchise players. I’m on board if they go HS pitching but they need not limit their board.

08 (Wow this was a bad draft…)

(15) Ethan Martin

09

Matt Hobgood

Zach Wheeler

Jacob Turner

10

Jameson Taillon

Karsten Whitson

11

Dylan Bundy

Archie Bradley

12

Max Fried

13

Kohl Stewart

Trey Bell

Phil Bickford

14

Brady Aiken

Tyler Kolek

(14) Kolby Allard

Well sucks to be those guys unless you got Taillon or Allard who is a future All Star.

Kershaw, Bumgarner. Look they are there. If we are going to fail yearly with the 1st round picks, may as well have it be the Raw, Highest upside HS arm. Because just hitting on one sets you up as a Franchise for 7 strong years. Hit on two and youre WS contenders so long as you dont trade them away.

Its the fear of picking the worst HS pitcher atop the draft, that they slide to the late mid teens where arms like Kershaw and Bumgarner get picked. Jason Groome last year, will turn out the best HS pitcher of draft class since he dropped, watch.

How many more decades do we sit here wishing we had pitching, a TOR Starter? Ben Sheets since I began watching Brewers Baseball is it.

The #Twins still are undecided but now leaning towards passing on HS pitcher Hunter Greene and taking Louisville 1B Brendan McKay w 1st pick

If the #Twins indeed pass on Hunter Greene, the #Reds plan to grab him at No 2 while #Padres would love to have him at No 3
