MISC. NOTES: Road locations Jacksonville and Quad Cities both carry MiLB.TV, with the road audio calls, naturally

***

If indeed Hiram Burgos makes the Sky Sox start this afternoon as listed, it'll mean he comes off the disabled list this AM.

***

From the Shuckers --

Biloxi and Pensacola head into their final series of the half in a tie for first place in the Southern League South. The Shuckers have five games remaining, while the Blue Wahoos have six.

Regardless of opponent, I think I'd rather play the five games than six. It places the impetus on Pensacola to have a better record down the stretch than Biloxi.

Go Shuckers!

AUDIO via "The Brewer Nation" Blog Tue. 6/14 --

Nice job here by Adam Rygg on his post-draft podcast, here's the breakdown:

Adam scored his own interview with 1st round OF Corey Ray - 11:45 minute mark

This is followed by all the various interviews, previously released to the pool media, of Amateur Scouting Director Ray Montgomery

Adam chats with 6th round Utah high school catcher Payton Henry (all indications are his signing will become formal shortly) - 01:02:00 minute mark

Wrapping up, is an excellent discussion with Brewers Farm Director Tom Flanagan - 01:23:00 minute mark

Really liked the podcast, especially the Flanagan interview, which had a nice focus on Helena/Maryvale topics, but also much more. Nice work, Adam!

Joe Ayrault lasted exactly one batter. Clint Terry walked the first guy then was called for a balk and they ran Ayrault when he complained. After a passed ball and sac fly, the Manatees were already down a run without the benefit of a Cardinals hit. Typical.

Back-to-back HRs by Cuas and McCall have tied the game late though.

VIDEO: Was pleased to see in this report via WLOX that for home games, Shuckers players are prepared both a pre-game and post-game meal.

I imagine that's the case at most ballparks for the home team, not sure.

Are those same meals offered to the opposing teams? How easy would it be for all affiliated teams, with financial assistance from the big league parent clubs, to enter into an agreement to feed both squads for each game in such a manner, meaning the minimum daily meal money given to each player can focus on a nutritious breakfast!

Darn it!

Catcher Manny Pina, who has been so very hot literally all season, left Game One of the Sky Sox doubleheader with what looks like a hamstring injury.

Col. Springs Bottom of the 6th

Yadiel Rivera strikes out swinging.

Orlando Arcia singles on a line drive to center fielder John Andreoli.

Manny Pina doubles (17) on a fly ball to left fielder Matt Murton. Orlando Arcia to 3rd.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Ariel Pena replaces Manny Pina.

Sky Sox will need a backup for Josmil Pinto starting Wednesday.

As per Dan at the Sky Sox blog --

ADD: C Rene Garcia promoted from Double-A Biloxi

RHP Hiram Burgos reinstated from the disabled list

DEL: C Manny Pina placed on the disabled list

Biloxi hasn't announced a corresponding move to get their own 2nd catcher to back up Jacob Nottingham, we imagine Parker Berberet will be summoned from the paper taxi squad.

Also, what is the status of Carlos Leal? Assuming he is injured, but do we know what the injury was and when he's expected to get back into action this year?

Todd Rosiak tweet --

For those who asked: C Carlos Leal is out for the season after undergoing shoulder surgery, and 1B Tyrone Perry will open with Arizona Brewers.

Rowan Wick, the Cardinals' farmhand who got the save, his 6th this season, for Palm Beach in the Manatee early game you'll read about later on, is a Canadian kid who was drafted as a catcher by Milwaukee (19th round, 2010, on to St. John's for school).

St. Louis drafted him in the 9th round in 2012, and after a rookie season behind the plate, transitioned to outfield, and as of three late appearances in 2015, is being converted to pitcher with some success. He's still just in his age 23 season.

Why would I remember this?

Well, the Brewers drafted RHP Joel Pierce in the 7th round along with Wick in 2010. Both Pierce and Wick were members of the Canadian Junior National Team, and they came to my Massachusetts home town for an exhibition against the local New England Collegiate Summer Baseball League squad. This was after the draft but before the signing period ended, so I knew the Brewers would have a presence at the game.

Sure enough, I introduced myself to the Brewers cross-checker there that night, and had a nice extended conversation.

That cross-checker's name?

Ray Montgomery.

The Brewers signed Pierce a short time later, and he was majorly overmatched as a pro.

Final: DSL Brewers 4, DSL Braves 0

DSL Brewers Box Score

Brewers also won the hit race, 11-2, and played clean defense again, nice!

19-year-old rookie RHP Jenri Montas made his second pro appearance and first career start very pretty, four no-hit innings (2 BB, 1 HBP, 1 K).

19-year-old rookie RHP Johan Dominguez sports this line after his first five appearances: 9.2 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 11 K. Sweet!

A 3rd rookie, RHP Freisis Adames, 19, finished up with two innings, scoreless in the combined shutout, naturally.

DSL Brewers Game Log

Recurring theme, all eleven Brewer base knocks were singles, but eleven is a fine number regardless.

All 15 of Luis Avila's base hits (.385 AVG) are singles, wonder how many of them are of the infield variety for the 17-year-old shortstop.

Third baseman Josue Herrera and rookie second baseman Edwin Sano (only his 3rd game thus far) had the other multi-hit games.

Moises Perez, playing first base, drew the Cerveceritos' only base on balls.

Mass, when I briefly worked in the Fall League, it was explained that the clubs provide no food. Clubhouse operations are funded by player dues. So whether at home or on the road, the players pay a small amount of money (say $5-10) which allows for food/drink budget, shoe service, laundry, and clubhouse staff. Some big league clubs may now contribute to food budget to help ensure nutritional content. When I worked in the Fall League, we provided players with 1 hot and 1 cold meal each day.

Phillips' three-run blast not enough in loss to Suns in opener

Brett Phillips blasted his team-leading ninth home run on Wednesday night (Jason Clark)

Biloxi Boxscore

Well Brandon Woodruff didn't get out of the 1st, which pretty much set the tone in this one.

The top 4 hitters in the order provided 6 of the 8 Shucker hits. Despite and a batting line that isn't all that impressive Brett Phillips has an .806 OPS after today's action on the strength of 22 XBHs.

Clint Coulter went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. (Brevard County Manatees - Tim Holle)

Article includes LINK to PHOTO GALLERY (5 Photos)

Also included in the text of the game story is an excellent PHOTO of spot starter Clint Terry.

Brevard County Box Score

Despite the loss, the game story and photos are worth checking out. Per usual, the game story does the heavy lifting so I am going to keep things short here.

George Iskenderian extended his hit streak to eight games and he is batting .314 in the month of June.

Nice offensive night for Clint Coulter with a pair of hits including a double as well as a walk. Coulter could use a string of positive production as his OPS for the season currently sits at .607.

The back-to-back homers from Jose Cuas and Gregory McCall were the Manatees 20th and 21st HR's of the year which is higher than only Palm Beach in the FSL.

Brevard County Game Log

As mentioned previously, Brevard County manager Joe Ayrault did not last long in this one.

Palm Beach Top of the 1st

Oscar Mercado walks.

With Cole Lankford batting, Oscar Mercado advances to 2nd on a balk.

Brevard County Manatees Manager Joe Ayrault ejected by 1B umpire Dave Attridge.

With Cole Lankford batting, passed ball by Greg McCall, Oscar Mercado to 3rd.

Cole Lankford out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Brandon Diaz. Oscar Mercado scores.

Blake Drake strikes out swinging.

Mason Katz grounds out softly, pitcher Clint Terry to first baseman Dustin DeMuth.

All four Manatees runs tallied in the 6th inning.

Brevard County Bottom of the 6th

Fidel Pena flies out to right fielder Orlando Olivera.

Clint Coulter doubles (5) on a line drive to right fielder Orlando Olivera.

George Iskenderian singles on a line drive to center fielder Blake Drake. Clint Coulter to 3rd.

Jose Cuas homers (2) on a line drive to left field. Clint Coulter scores. George Iskenderian scores.

Greg McCall homers (2) on a line drive to right field.

Pitching Change: Kyle Grana replaces Ian McKinney.

Brandon Diaz strikes out swinging.

Malik Collymore walks.

With Angel Ortega batting, Malik Collymore steals (2) 2nd base.

Angel Ortega lines out to left fielder Jhohan Acevedo.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Late rallies fall short in Quad Cities

Wisconsin drops 4-3 decision to the River Bandits

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Wisconsin Boxscore

Conor Harber got the start and pitched extremely well but unfortunately poor defense contributed to Drake Owenby's 3 run slippage in the 7th which ended up being the difference in the game.

Mitch Ghelfi (2-5). Luis Aviles (2-4,2B,BB), Max McDowell (2-5), and Troy Stokes (2-5) posted multi hit games for the Rattlers. Ghelfi had been on a horrible cold stretch so hopefully this jump starts him a little bit. Stokes has been floating below .200 for most of the season but today's effort bumped him over that mark for the first time since May 5th.

Wisconsin Recap

The Rattlers pulled it out in the 8th last night, tonight they left more runs out there...

Wisconsin Top of the 8th

  • Mitch Ghelfi singles on a line drive to center fielder Osvaldo Duarte.
Luis Aviles walks. Mitch Ghelfi to 2nd.
Max McDowell reaches on a fielding error by shortstop Kristian Trompiz. Mitch Ghelfi to 3rd. Luis Aviles to 2nd.
Carlos Belonis walks. Mitch Ghelfi scores. Luis Aviles to 3rd. Max McDowell to 2nd.
Pitching Change: David Schmidt replaces Juan Santos.
Troy Stokes Jr. singles on a ground ball to right fielder Hector Roa. Luis Aviles scores. Max McDowell to 3rd. Carlos Belonis to 2nd.
Isan Diaz singles on a line drive to center fielder Osvaldo Duarte. Max McDowell scores. Carlos Belonis out at home on the throw, center fielder Osvaldo Duarte to catcher Anthony Hermelyn. Troy Stokes Jr. to 3rd on the throw.
Blake Allemand walks. Isan Diaz to 2nd.
David Denson called out on strikes.
Monte Harrison grounds into a force out, shortstop Kristian Trompiz to second baseman Keach Ballard II. Blake Allemand out at 2nd.

Did Woodruff just get lifted because of poor results in that 1st inning, or was there an injury involved? Hope it was just performance based, but that's an awfully quick hook isn't it?

Six batters faced, only one retired, 36 pitches -- Brewers coaches aren't going to let any pitcher go over 40 pitches in a single inning, and Woodruff would have easily eclipsed that.

RHP Hiram Burgos allowed an amazing 14 baserunners in his five innings (four runs) -- picking off two runners at first base helped limit the damage to some extent.

In the fifth, the Sky Sox got a spectacular play at shortstop to end the inning. With runners on first and second and one out, David Freitas hit a hard ground ball up the middle. Orlando Arcia dove behind the second base bag to snag the ball. Then, while lying on the dirt, he flipped the ball to Elmore at second with his glove, and Elmore made the bare-hand catch and throw to complete a thrilling inning ending double play to get Burgos out of trouble.
