So they can essentially get $100K over their slot value without the Brewers incurring a penalty? This stuff is confusing to me, but that shouldn't be a surprise--I get confused easily.

Each pick past round 10 has a $100k cap. Every dollar given as a signing bonus in excess of $100k counts against the pool. So a $250k bonus in round 11 only counts $150k against the pool. You get the first $100k free, in essence.

Should also mention this assumes that Daniel Brown eventually signs for slot, or does not sign at all.

Arent the Brewers down ~$12.5k availble on the penalized 5% overage if he doesn't sign because their total bonus pool goes down by ~$250,000?

The Brewers have $1,208,915 to sign McClanahan, or $1,308,915 to sign McClanahan and Clark. Or $1,408,915 to sign McClanahan, Clark, and Crow. Or $1,508,915 to sign McClanahan, Clark, Crow, and Lillis. The first $100k of signing bonus does not count against the pool after round 10.

Where did you get the $1.2M number from? This is what I came up with:

[pre]Round Pick Name Position Signing Bonus Slot Allocation Savings

1 5 Corey Ray OF $4,125,000 $4,382,200 $257,200

2 46 Lucas Erceg 3B $1,150,000 $1,386,900 $236,900

2.5 75 Mario Feliciano C $800,000 $851,900 $51,900

3 82 Braden Webb RHP $700,000 $764,800 $64,800

4 111 Corbin Burnes RHP $536,400 $536,400 $0

5 141 Zack Brown RHP $401,700 $401,700 $0

6 171 Payton Henry C $550,000 $300,800 ($249,200)

7 201 Daniel Brown LHP $225,500 $225,500 $0

8 231 F. Thomas SS $200,000 $183,200 ($16,800)

9 261 Trey York 2B $25,000 $171,100 $146,100

10 291 Blake Fox LHP $10,000 $159,800 $149,800

Totals: $8,723,600 $9,364,300 $640,700[/pre]

By that, we should have only $740,700 ($640,700+$100k base for post 10 draft pick) to sign one, $840,700 to sign two, etc..

Why would the 9th and 10th round guys sign for so much under slot???

As mentioned they are college seniors and have no negotiation leverage. I'm guessing neither was a Top 10 round talent to add to it. The Brewers intentionally took them so they could save pool money.

Also, these deals are likely pre-arranged with the player. As TPlush said, the team benefits by saving money in their draft pool for a more talented, higher cost player, while the marginal players benefit by knowing they'll get taken, by which team, and what meager amount they're getting paid.

Chad McClanahan wants $1.2 million to sign.

Which would blow virtually all of their remaining money short of forfeiting a pick next year. $1.2 mil equates with pick number 53 overall.

He doesn't really deserve that much, but in the large picture it really isn't that much regardless. Wish they could afford Horn, but we don't have near enough to get him.

To get really into detail after a tax on the overage he would cost us about $1.65mil

At least Ray came in underslot. A number of posters assured everyone that he was not an underslot guy but it turns out he was by almost $300,000. That's the thing, you can pontificate all you want, but fact checking can come back to get you because things actually turn out one way or another. Here, Ray is in fact an underslot guy.

Some random thoughts:

Very impressed with the haul of prospects Brewers managed in this draft and international class.

Gotta think David Stearns will end up be known as a rebuild guru after helping in Houston and clearly having Milwaukee on the right track. Hopefully a big market team like the LA Angels or NY Yankees do not notice.

Using every last pre-penalty penny in the pool is quite impressive. No waste. McClanahan got paid like a 2nd rounder. I hope it pays off.

I would be floored at this point if Crow or Lillis sign. But you never know.

Kind of surprised Morrison and Garcia haven't signed. The odds are against Morrison getting much more than $100k as a senior sign next year. Garcia I'm in the dark about - don't think he's committed to a 4-year college, but maybe he thinks he can boost his stock this upcoming season.

As an aside, if we sign our top ten rounders, I give Ray a B. If we get McClanahan OR Clark, B+. If we get both it's an A. I also think Morrison would be a very solid signing.

How about McClanahan, Clark, AND Morrison? Love the infusion of talent we're getting.

Not sure how anyone can be upset with this draft. We got prospects who seem to have high ceilings and we actually signed them.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I'd have to do some research to confirm, but I do not remember the Brewers ever signing so many of their draft picks before. Even including the "wasted" (not my word) picks of Horn and Serrano, the Brewers signed 87.5% of their guys. And that could increase in the next week if Aguilar signs and/or they somehow entice Crow or Lillis with $100k.
