Even if this works out, I still don't really understand it. Smith isn't a LOOGY and had retired the first 2. Even if Cespedes reaches, Smith would have still had the L/L matchup against Loney.

 

Glad Thornburg got Loney to make it a moot point, but just don't see why it was necessary.

I put that entire missed opportunity on Nieuwenhuis. 2 straight ABs he has seen 6 pitches middle up and he may as well have been up there with a fly swatter in both ABs because he didn't touch a single one.
