Villar's value

What do you all think villar's value is at this trade deadline with the season he's having and all the team control left. I'm not saying I think the Brewers should trade him, just wondering if anyone has a sense of his value/return?

What! We finally get a decent guy and you want to trade him!? What the heck is wrong with you people!

Blah, blah, blah.

Just joking. This has been a pre-emptive rant that accompanies any question about assessing the trade value of a player.

Villar is like anyone else, he's not un-tradeable. Problem will be getting a return that would make Stearns want to trade him.

Let's remember it's only 1/3 of the season. He doesn't show any signs of slowly down, but just a quick reality check. He's not the type of guy contenders usually want at the trade deadline, limited body of work. Most teams are looking for that gritty veteran if they need IF help.

Bottom line, I think it's one of those situations where he's more valuable to the Brewers than what someone is willing to give up. Then again, what would a Villar/Smith package get? or Villar/Jeffress? Brewers will have plenty of talent to dangle, will be interesting.

Villar's value would probably all over the board if you surveyed GMs. As was noted, it's 1/3 of a season. Teams will be wary (as well they should). But it just takes one person to fall in love with the guy to boost his value, so you never know.

Come trade deadline, and he's got 2/3 of a season under his belt, his value will only rise if he's still hitting.

The good thing is that he'll still have a ton of value - perhaps even more - if you wait until the off season (assuming he keeps hitting). A full season of quality play would sway a lot of doubters.

If they trade him now, and I have no idea why they would, he wouldnt be worth slightly more than a Cy Sneed.

If he performs like this the rest of the season, they could land quite a bit. SS who put up his numbers earn 9 digit extensions.

Agree with Boomer that he would need to sustain this for at least an entire season to be a significant trading chip.

Right now he has far more value to us as a player than as a trade asset.

I think he could be our next 3rd baseman

You meant second baseman.

I think he meant 3rd baseman for now. Hill's likely to be moved before the deadline. Either they'll bring up Arcia to play SS and move Villar or leave Villar at SS and put Perez at 3B and bring Rivera back as utility guy. You may eventually see Villar at 2nd but they won't move Gennett any sooner than this winter. If that happens you could see Perez at 3B, Arcia at SS, and Villar at 2B.

If you believe what Villar is showing is not simply a hot stretch, then his trade value will grow well beyond what it is now in a year or two.

I in agreement with the "too soon" opinion. If you want to trade at his peak, I'd give him some more time.

But I think we hang onto him at this point and make him a secondary piece of our next core. And I'd prefer 2B with Perez at 3B. Scooter had his chances. Time to see what Perez can do.

Scooter has raised his average a lot this week. If he gets comfortable, he could be up around .280 at the all star break. I haven't given up on him yet, as he reached the majors at a young age and has had to learn pitch recognition and plate discipline on the fly.

Find it hard to believe the Brewers would only get a Cy Sneed type player in return if traded today. He has been a starting SS for the last couple of months and contrary to previous posts I think his defense has been better than advertised and certainly not abysmal.Has shown speed and the ability to get on base, a type of guy I would like the Brewers to bat leadoff for years. Not likely a guy to stick at SS with Arcia around but has 4 more years of team control including one at the minimum. Think that Arcia/Villar on defense, on the basepaths and the top of the order will be fun to watch for years to come.

Personally I'd like to keep both Scooter & Villar

If Steans could get something decent for Scooter, i'd love to see Villar as the everyday secondbaseman next year if Arcia is at shortstop. Villar is an ideal leadoff hitter and doesn't come with the left/right hitting splits issues that Scooter does.

Villar's just as valuable at 3B as he is at 2B. So who do you like more in there everyday, Perez at 3B or Scooter at 2B? I'm sure Counsell can find time for all of them. Scooter is a good major league hitter, who for the past two seasons has got himself into a funk mechanically and taken some time to get out of it. The DL time no doubt had something to with it this year. Keith Hernandez noted when the Brewers were in NY that Scooter was struggling big time, and noted last night how his swing and approach looked much, much better.

Villar's just as valuable at 3B as he is at 2B.

If a player can defend 2B and 3B approximately equally, he's going to be more valuable at 2B because it's tougher to find offense at that spot.

Think of Craig Counsell as an example. Teams were happy to play him at 2B for an extended period. But even though he defended 3B just fine, he didn't have the power you'd hope for at that position.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

As young as he is, I see no reason to field trade offers for him unless someone comes calling with an offer that is just too good to be true. At some point, we have to start keeping our young guys so we have the players it takes to contend when that time finally arrives.

Lucroy should be traded, without a doubt, Braun I'd like to see retire a Brewer, but the odds of that happening are not in our favor. It's nice having a guy that is a lifetime Brewer, kind of Yount-like. I wouldn't mind keeping Braun around to be that old vet who is still helping the team out when we are competing for the WS... I'm a Braun fan, regardless of his past. He has made amends in my mind.

Stearns traded for Villar and had to give up little. He looks like a genius and he isn't going to give up his top prize unless he is blown away and someone wants to value him like he is actually a perennial all star.

That won't happen of course and Villar won't go anywhere. Not that I mind.

I think we are seeing the versatility trait Stearns seeks coming to bear. Guys that can play multiple positions don't have to be traded to make room. I have a feeling Gennett will ultimately be the odd man out because he can only play 2nd.
