Kernels Crush Rattlers with Late Comeback

Cedar Rapids rallies from 6-0 hole for 9-8 walkoff win

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Wisconsin Boxscore

In my opinion Drake Owenby has been better in relief than as a starter all year. Migual Diaz is on a bit of a cold streak, he's given up 4 runs in 3 of his last 4 outings.

The hitters did more than enough to win this with Blake Allemand (2-4,BB), Luis Aviles (2-5), and Mitch Ghelfi (2-4) posting multi hit games. Every Rattler hitter contributed except for Isan Diaz, who also committed the game ending error, just a tough game for him.

Wisconsin Recap

Far and away the busiest recap of the year if you are so inclined.

Biloxi Boxscore

Brett Lee didn't pitch well but everyone else did today. Brooks Hall got the actual start and pitched pretty well, it's no secret I've never been a believer in him as a legit starter but with SO numbers like he put up today I could change my tune.

Brevard County Box Score

Despite the offensive outburst from the Yankees, Bubba Derby was only charged with two earned runs. Derby's 6 K's gave him 51 on the season which moved him into a tie for 5th most strikeouts among all FSL pitchers. Derby's SO/9 ratio this season is 9.94.

Speaking of strikeouts, the Manatees aren't near the top of the Florida State League leaderboards in many positive statistical categories, but they are second in the FSL in team pitching strikeouts (435 total), trailing only Clearwater (443).

Having his best offensive season since being drafted in the 6th round in 2012 out of Puerto Rico, SS Angel Ortega went 2-for-4 with a walk to improve his season batting average to .284. This year marks the first time in Ortega's professional career that he has repeated a level. Despite the solid average, Ortega's OBP could still use a boost as it currently sits at .313.

Other multi hit efforts included catcher Adam Weisenburger (2-for-4, BB) and 2B Fidel Pena (2-for-5).

Clint Coulter kept his season batting average just above the Mendoza line (he is at .202) by going 1-for-4. Coulter also was hit by a pitch, struck out twice, and recorded his first stolen base for the year.

The Manatees were just 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position and left 12 stranded on the bases.

The only extra base hit for the Manatees was a double off the wall from Elvis Rubio. The double came against rehabbing Yankees pitcher Luis Severino. Extra base hits seem hard to come by as Brevard County has an FSL worst team OPS of just .594. By comparison today's opponent, Tampa, has a team OPS of .734 this season.

Brevard County Game Log

The Manatees cut the lead down to just two and had bases loaded in the final frame with just one out, but unfortunately a pop out and fly out ended the threat.

Brevard County Bottom of the 9th

Johnny Davis walks.

Angel Ortega grounds into a force out, first baseman Bo Thompson to shortstop Abiatal Avelino. Johnny Davis out at 2nd. Angel Ortega to 1st.

Dustin DeMuth singles on a line drive to center fielder Michael O'Neill. Angel Ortega to 3rd.

Clint Coulter singles on a ground ball to pitcher Dillon McNamara. Angel Ortega scores. Dustin DeMuth to 2nd.

Adam Weisenburger walks. Dustin DeMuth to 3rd. Clint Coulter to 2nd.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Malik Collymore replaces Adam Weisenburger.

Fidel Pena pops out to shortstop Abiatal Avelino on the infield fly rule.

Elvis Rubio flies out to center fielder Michael O'Neill

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Final: Colorado Springs 7, Fresno 5

Sky Sox Beat Fresno 7-5 With Late Rally

Three runs in the eighth give the Sky Sox the victory on Sunday afternoon

By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Nate Orf hit three doubles in the Sky Sox win over Fresno on Sunday...

As always, the game summary linked above paints the game picture much better than we can through a few box score notes, please give it a read...

***

Colorado Springs Box Score

From the Fresno Bee: A day after issuing nine walks in an 8-4 loss to the Grizzlies, Sky Sox pitchers finished with seven walks on Sunday. Entering the day, the Sky Sox led the Pacific Coast League with 204 walks issued and were second among all Triple-A clubs.

Colorado Springs Game Log

Orlando Arcia drew his 10th walk in 181 AB's, thank you Jonathan Villar, for allowing Arcia to spend times working on portions of his game that still need cultivation; we see you, Nate Orf, we really do, keep it up, buddy (.419 OBP in his first 42 AAA games); five walks in five innings for Taylor Jungmann, so despite just the one earned run (two runs total) in five innings, not true progress...
