Names Mentioned in Final Week(s) Before Draft Thread - 2016 Edition

Community Moderator

Now exactly two weeks away from the draft we will use this thread to discuss names that get mentioned in connection with the Brewers. This can come in the form of private workouts, scouts in attendance at games, players mentioning the team has contacted them, or other forms of rumors. Admittedly our batting average on these rumors coming to fruition was pretty low last year (LINK to last year's thread), but nevertheless it is fun track the Brewers potential targets leading into the amateur draft.

Our first LINK is homegrown high school (Verona) catcher Ben Rortvedt who as the article mentions recently played in front of Brewers senior advisor Doug Melvin (along with a flock of scouts from other organizations).

Please note discussion on this topic is underway in the other draft THREAD: We're Number 5! We're Number 5!. Please continue at that thread for discussion about the Brewers first draft selection.

In the spirit of also relaying links/tweets of draft prospects connected to the Brewers over the next week in this thread (for easy reference) I have posted below as well. Usually about a week out from the draft this information really picks up as the prospects have their final workouts for teams. Jason Groome for instance is flying to both Denver and San Diego this week for his team workouts.

@longenhagen: Also hearing Brewers GM David Stearns has been in to see Jason Groome, Riley Pint and Zack Collins.

More Rumors

Jesse Burkhart ‏@jesseburkhart 3m3 minutes ago

Source says the Phillies’ director is currently in P.R. checking up on Perez. A way-underslot, Carlos Correa-type deal wouldn’t surprise me.

Jesse Burkhart ‏@jesseburkhart 2m2 minutes ago

Hearing that the Reds are split on Lewis and Perez at No. 2. Braves at No. 3 are being linked to everyone and your mother.

Jesse Burkhart ‏@jesseburkhart 4m4 minutes ago

The Phillies have narrowed down to 5 names for the top pick, I’m told. Puk is their lean, with Lewis, Rutherford, Moniak, Perez in the mix.

Jesse Burkhart ‏@jesseburkhart 2m2 minutes ago

The Rockies are fishing for prep talent at No. 4. Moniak, Groome and Pint are the names popping up.

It gets messy after that, with names changing depending on which dominoes fall first. More info will come after pre-draft meetings.

Discussion regarding the first selection continues in the other draft thread, but will be capturing rumors and information in this thread as well while we piece together the Brewers interest in various prospects of all different round projections...

Still not much info on which players participated in the today's Brewers pre-draft workout at Miller Park. The first confirmed participant was Lake Bachar from UW-Whitewater (h/t Dan Zielinski via this ARTICLE).

This series of tweets from Salt Lake Tribune sports writer Steve Luhm provides information about another player that attended the pre-draft workout in Milwaukee, Utah HS catcher Payton Henry.

@sluhm: Pleasant Grove catcher Payton Henry, the No. 1 draft prospect in Utah, worked for D-backs/Rockies in 115-degree heat today in Scottsdale.
@sluhm: Henry could go as high as the second/third/fourth round. Also has a scholarship from BYU. Draft position will decide which option he picks.
@sluhm: Payton's dad, Darrin, coached him at PG. Said his son " tore it up" at a pre-draft workout in Milwaukee this week. Showed his power.

Just a couple more names to add to the worked out for the Brewers list recently. Top 100 draft prospect Bryse Wilson from Orange, CA according to this tweet

and two JUCO players Delvin Zinn #233 on the BA 500 list and Tyreque Reed worked out for the Brewers in Biloxi per this tweet

Sorry if the formatting is bad on those links. I don't post around here often enough to know what I'm doing.

Great find amt2138!

ARTICLE LINK: It is highly unlikely Gavin Lux is a Brewers draft pick unless they shock everybody and take him with their first selection, but as Tom Haudricourt mentions in the article both David Stearns and Doug Melvin have scouted Lux in-person this Spring.

Well I mean he is right around the corner. Not surprised they scouted him in person.

Like Payton Henry, think he'd be a great 3-4 rd pick. Max Walla tore up Pre Work and ended up being 2nd round pick so having big workouts can have lasting impression. Nice to get another young developmental catcher. Garfield & Houle have been our only two really in awhile.

Proud member since 2003 (geez ha I was 14 then)

FORMERLY BrewCrewWS2008 and YoungGeezy don't even remember other names used
