2016 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5

The super usually over optimistic MLB crew compared him to Ray Lankford. Zzzzzzzzzzz

And you guys are right, he won't be under slot. Low ceiling but safe guy who apparently cant play CF. I guess if this a bad draft then that's what you get a 5.

Still not very exciting paying slot for a meh corner OF.

Where are the Ray scouting reports saying he has a low ceiling? If he sticks in CF and develops more power he is a potential 30-30 guy up the middle...

30/30?! Scouts are hoping he can maybe give you 20 Hrs. He doesn't have much size, swing doesn't really have much lift to it, and yeah I can understand 20/20 as in like 20-22 HRs, 30.... That's really being optimistic.

FORMERLY BrewCrewWS2008 and YoungGeezy don't even remember other names used

That's still interesting. Let's just say several guys had a higher obp. For Louisville. And he's a tweeter between cf and corner of. Doesn't mean it's a bad pick, just a couple legitimate things to consider.

Ryan Braun did not lead his team in OBP the year he was drafted. I'm guessing you would find it's not unusual. Teams draft based on tools and potential, not college performance.

I get that. Not trying to overstate the importance of obp when projecting a player. But I'll bet Miami didn't have several players with higher obp. Just interesting for a top 5 pick, could very well mean nothing.

I mean, it's not like he had awful college stats. Ray lead the ACC in total bases, was third in home runs, lead in stolen bases by a mile, etc. The reason he didn't have a huge OBP was because he didn't hit .380 AVG like his teammates, but I haven't seen any scouting reports questioning his hit tool. He gets 50/60 hit tool grades.

That's called upside, i.e. he exceeds his current power tool (which projects 15-20 HR). He had good HR stats in college and he has the build for showing more power down the line. It's optimistic but not unrealistic.

If Groome ends up being ace, Montgomery and Stearns will never live it down. Ever.

Or will the other 10 teams that passed on him? That's a lot of not living down.

It doesn't matter. Milwaukee needs front line pitching and has no way to get it. They played it safe. Let's be real. Pretty much worst case scenario in the top 15 picks. Groome is something Milwaukee needed, and I don't give a flip about the other posters.

This one won't go away. Milwaukee isn't getting an ace in free agency.

They over thought this one by a longshot.

I am glad we picked one of the cornerstones for the next competitive team. Not only that but a great all around player. Not some player who strikes out a lot or horrid on defense that plagued us before.

I actually worry a little bit about Ray being strikeout prone. I am the first to admit small sample size, but in Cape Cod in 2014 with a wood bat he struck out 34 times in 92 at-bats while walking just 6 times.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

They are celebrating in St Louis and Wrigley. Don't need to worry about the uninspired Brewers who wasted a terrible last year on a punch and judy, slap hitter with a high floor and an uninspired batting average. But hey, he can start his mediocrity early.

Don't hope for losses. They will squander the pick. No foresight or comprehension of the Milwaukee market. Medeiros, Arnett, Heckathorn, Kentrail, Bradley, and now a weak hitting leftfielder with a high floor.

Go away. Seriously.

I am not going away. Add value to a post, and leave your ad hominem posts at home. We will just have to see if Groome becomes a stud pitcher.

In a 162 game season his stats translate to.. 42 doubles, 39 HR, 91 BB, 114 SB. So just saying he hit 15 HR so that is his upside is a bit misleading. The 39K to 36 BB plate discipline is nice, the speed is obviously nice and the power between the doubles and home runs probably translates to more than 15 HR. I also see him listed at 6 feet on most sites.

Current MLB players I've seen him compared to are Andrew McCutchen and Jason Heyward.

Dang it if only we had the best trade chip of the summer or more picks in the top half of the first round in the future. Groome was our only chance to ever get an Ace.

My instinct is not to love this pick, mainly because he's 21. He'll need to develop in a hurry. But the single biggest thing I've heard about this draft is "weak at the top, no consensus," so I'm having a hard time getting agitated. This draft seems like an unusually strong case for trusting the scouts and analysts.

I would ask that people stop attacking other people over their responses - whatever you think of the pick. Nothing good will come from it.

+1 People are entitled to their opinions. It's pretty basic.

It really ruins the thread when people just whine nonstop about a pick they know nothing about though. Criticize the front office for going with an OF over a SP, going for less risk, or whatever, but people just trashing Corey Ray as if he's a bad player is totally uncalled for. He is an elite player.

He's not hitting 39 homers in the majors. He isn't facing Wake Forest here. His average does not project well. Outfielders like this are a dime a dozen.

Do you read? Guess not because he didn't say it would.

Good luck with that. You're getting a number two starter if things go well at best. You think you're getting Giolito? I'd be shocked. That would be a panic move by the Nats. The Dodgers aren't giving up Urias. I'm not talking about the chubby kid from the Rangers. That's not what Groome projects to be. He's much better.

Teams that have Groome type pitchers don't trade them away.

You mean like "I don't give a flip about the other posters"?

Typo on my part. I meant about other teams. Not posters.
