2016 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5

Wondering if Groome and Rutherford end up dropping to overslot selections near the end of the first round.

Well at this point he has to be picked by someone who can underslot other selections to give him the $4mil he wants

Then what's the point? Underdraft early to save on bonus pool money, so that you can give it back to the same guys later who should have been drafted earlier?

Is this a sign that the draft needs to be revised again?

This forum really turns into "JS Online Comments" sometimes. Yes, there were arguably more "exciting" players than Corey Ray, but he was a consensus top-5/top-10 talent and some evaluators had him as the best player in the draft. Stop pretending like you know what you're talking about and that he's a bad player.

Plus 1

none of the people who study this stuff for a living think this was a bad pick or even a reach.

All of the moaning is a bit much...relax

Corey Ray sounds like a great guy, he is not an underslot deal because every single mock had him in this top 5 or 10 picks, and some professional evaluators think he is the best player in the draft.

There is objectively no reason to be upset about the Brewers pick.

Any change Groome, Rutherford, or Lowe is there with the 2nd pick?

No chance. These guys are going to get gobbled up somewhere between pick 20 and pick 44. When teams who have 3 picks before Milwaukee's #45 take them. Philly will probably have 5.5million when they start the 2nd round. Atlanta too has so much cash. San Diego or LA Dodgers.

Even if one did it doesn't matter as we wouldn't have the money to give them what they want.

Reading this stuff made my head hurt. Go back to your day jobs. Welcome to the organization Ray!

That is his ceiling sadly imo. He is a better version of Michael Reed..... Ughhhhh Reed was a 5th pick, not #5 overall!

This is just ridiculous. I mean, come on.

Yeah little irrational posting. Passed on a lot of talent for the one guy I absolutely did not want at 5. I don't take back the better version of Michael Reed because I think they are similar. Both are good enough athletes to play CF but both will never be the best option out there...the desperate need for a bat or body are only two reasons to play them there. Both will walk a ton, steal a bunch of bases, carry high OBPs. Ray will hit for more average and hopefully more power. Reed has the arm to play MLB RF, Ray.... His arm will be closer to Aoki out there. I have said, I tried to watch him, like him, think positive of him but he just doesn't jump off page at all to me. He is just solid. I bet as a college bat, he will crush through the lower levels as he should. However, unlike Braun or other top prospects I don't see his bat forcing its way into the majors and becoming an impact bat.

I pray I am wrong, he becomes the next Mookie Betts but I just don't see it at all. I rather just went underslot with Colliens or someone. Now we won't even be able to make up for this with big overslot at 45. Ray will get his 4 million & yup. Just not a fan.

That the exact response I received a few years ago when I said the same things about Jed Bradley. I continue to "pretend" to act like I know what I'm talking about, because I do.

Rather than being condescending, simply show me a college player who hit like Ray and then became successful.

People will tell me those mediocre collegiate results don't matter, just like they said about Bradley. They also said Bradley was a good pick because these same so-called experts who also like Ray said so.

So you guys would have preferred Rutherford or Lewis, both who have not been picked and may be out of the top 10? Thank god Stearns and Montgomery are running the show

Corey Seager went 18th and Michael Wacha went 19th in 2012. So far they look to be better picks than Kyle Zimmer at #5. GMs do make mistakes.

Well one of those experts is Ray Montgomery and this pick will be a large "definer" of Ray's picking ability.

Is Ray really eighth on Louisville in OBP at .396?

Legit guys with many AB's that much better than Ray on Louisville?

The "eighth in OBP" is terribly misleading. 3 of those players had under 110 ABs and Ray had 100 more ABs than two of the others. And yes, he's a better prospect than any of them.

Jason Groome for example rumored to command 4mil to more. You miss on signing him at #5 it's 4.3mil gone. #4 it's 5.25mil gone. 6.5mil #3 7.76mil #2 and 9.01mil #1. You fail to sign, you not only lose all that draft allotted money, But the Comp for next draft. #1 to #2 is 1.25million, 2-3 1.25mil, 3-4 1.25mil then 1.05mil 4-5.

#34 has 1.878Mil #35 1.837mil or only 41k less. 1.25million is the equivalent of #50 in draft slot value.

Trout went like 25th forcing Brewers to go Arnett. Guys fall all the time.

Maybe if Brewers didn't draft Ray, he would have dropped as well... Never know. Hope I'm wrong. He'll start in Wisconsin I'm guessing & after I see him in person my mind will change. Just disappointed, Groome, Lowe, & Garrett were my favorites. Still think in a few years Lowe will be the guy most teams regret passing on.
