2016 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5

Corey Ray isn't a reach, but I thought they'd take Rutherford, and he is the player I wanted.

I don't know what happened with those pitchers, but it had become obvious that they were falling over the last week or so.

There are several players I wouldn't argue much about, and Ray is one of them. I wish he had more HR power, that's the one knock, and if he moves from CF, it's a legitimate concern. Ray is definitely a talent, but if he is a .280, 15 HR left fielder, the Brewers had better have unusual power someplace up the middle to compensate.

Glad I wasted last year hyped & studying for this pick.....He better underslot at no more than 2 million. The one guy out of like the top 15 I was dead set against! Throw him in BC right away & see how he does.... I don't think Belonis, Clark, Harrison, Denson should be forced out of Wisconsin due to poor drafting

So it's not the consensus, but there are numerous well-respected evaluators who thought Ray was the best player in the draft. Hard to complain about that really... Ray is the best player drafted by the Brewers since Ryan Braun, that's more or less an objective fact.

Midwesterner and a great story too: http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/ray-of-light-corey-ray/

Hope this is right

Keith Law

1. Corey Ray, OF

Louisville

Previous rank: 1

Although Ray could slip out of the top five, I still think he's the best all-around player in the draft class, a power-speed guy who has a good idea of the strike zone and plenty of bat speed, giving him a high floor of an everyday left fielder

So, as a laymen reading about this stuff, it kinda sounds like this entire draft sucks--at least at the top. Perhaps it is deeper from players 50-250, but nobody seems very exciting in the first round. Thus, Ray is fine with me.

I want it on record. I really like this pick. Bats that murder the low minors, as I expect he will, can sometimes be traded for that ace pitcher you guys want. You know, like laporta for cc.

Ray was out OPS'd by recent Brewers draft picks Logan Schafer, Cole Gillespie, and Kentrail Davis. His rate of improvement was also very low. Terrible pick. Worst pick since Jed Bradley.

If he has fans here, please name me another OF with a college OPS as low as Rays who became an All-Star. Please! Help me be happy again!

A few years from now we could have an OF of Ray, Clark and Phillips. That would be an incredibly athletic group.

Could be a very interesting OF of .280 -.300, 15-25 HR and 20-40 SB across the board players if they all reach their ceilings...

Of course Jeff Juden, Jimmy Haynes and Jamey Wright could comprise 3/5 of their starting rotation...

I don't follow the draft until draft day, so I came in with open mind. The film they just played of him, and comments made.... I just don't see anything special in Ray. Seems like there's two better OF on the board if they wanted to go that way, but what do I know.

Ouch. Puk only averaged 4 2/3 innings this whole year. Made it to the 8th only twice.

Yup I will never blame the Brewers for passing on him. He has the pitches, but man is he a massive risk. Groome was also a massive risk.

I want an ace like the rest of you, but taking a huge risk like Puk/Groome could blow up in your face really fast. I understand some risk, but in my opinion those two might have been just too much of one.

Also Corey Ray won't sign for that much underslot because he was a Top 5 talent.

I contend this is David Stearns playing it safe because he doesn't want to screw up his first draft. Problem is he just screwed it up.

Ray Montgomery might have had something to do with this?

Stearns is the GM. If he wanted a pitcher they'd take a pitcher

Sweet. Maybe we can draft like this three more times then take those three picks, add in Ray, and we can trade for an ace for half a season. I'm sorry for the sarcasm it's not directed at you. I'm just extremely frustrated by this. Not only did we not take the best pitcher we didn't even take the best outfielder.

That is his ceiling sadly imo. He is a better version of Michael Reed..... Ughhhhh Reed was a 5th pick, not #5 overall! All Stearns BS talk about upside & ceiling....then he does this, come on! I have been the biggest Stearns & Montgomery homer around....I am thank you'd with a kick to the "boys"

Sorry rant over.... I'll move on from this disappointment. Just need to stop posting, rationalize & accept what just happened, and pretend like drafting a .270-.280 average 10-15 HR LF at #5 is fine

Does this mean we are looking at 2018 being competitive? Seems like this is a player that will be ready fast which suggests the rebuild timeframe is faster than I thought.

I think they picked Corey Ray because he was the best player on their board. Not because of how fast he would get to the majors.
