2016 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5

Community Moderator
Like how we have stocked up on LH bats lately.

That was my biggest criticism of the Jack Z/Doug M regime - no LH balance. Seid drafted LH bats but they didn't pan out (Kentrail Davis, Walla, Morris, Ramirez, Neuhaus).

I am not ready to give up on Tucker Neuhaus just yet. He is 9 months younger than Corey Ray and would be in his Junior year at Louisville with him had he not signed professionally. I think there is still hope he could progress if he could finally stay healthy.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

For those bemoaning a guy's power in college with aluminum bats and worrying that someone won't be able to hit with a wood bat, keep in mind that power numbers have been WAY down in college the last few years because of new bats that were introduced. The home run numbers increased a tick last year because balls with flatter seams were used, but it's not like guys are jacking balls out of the park a million times a game like they used to.

Three HS players in the first round from the Atlanta area, one of which is from the school district in which I live.

Looks like the competition is stiff in my neck of the woods. My 7-year old's eight hours of practice per day regimen starts TOMORROW.

Can the criticism of Bruce Seid stop now?

No, just like the criticism of Melvin, and the Brewers in general for not being able to draft and develop pitching will never stop until they churn out a couple of top of rotation arms in the same rotation. As good as Jack Z was he wasn't immune to criticism... Right now we basically have to trade for impact pitching, the problem is that by the time that pitching hits AA it's incredibly expensive because now they are proven prospects and rated highly on every prospect list.

This is not Stearns' draft, this isn't football, it's Montgomery's draft, he's making the picks.

I want it on record. I really like this pick. Bats that murder the low minors, as I expect he will, can sometimes be traded for that ace pitcher you guys want. You know, like laporta for cc.

So the best we can hope for is less than 6 months of legitimate pitching at a time?

Any change Groome, Rutherford, or Lowe is there with the 2nd pick? Otherwise I'm done with this draft.

Well...bye...

Some of these guys act like they're the second coming of Theo Epstein... Trust the executives and let the kid play before making rash judgements.

....isn't this an indictment of our entire American society?

The Lind trade seems to represent Stearns' attempt to split this diiference. Not saying any of those three guys will be an ace, but he's clearly targeting pitchers post-draft and pre-AA.

That's still interesting. Let's just say several guys had a higher obp. For Louisville. And he's a tweeter between cf and corner of. Doesn't mean it's a bad pick, just a couple legitimate things to consider.

He isn't really a tweener. Most think he can hit 15-20 homers a year on average. And honestly when he is hitting .280/.360 with 40+ stolen bases he will be good to play anywhere.

He's not going to steal 40 bases in MLB, there's a difference between being an elite athlete and having elite reflexes and speed... in some players they go together but I've seen more than my fair share of "athletes" that could only move quickly in a straight line. As in receivers and running backs that were great in track (even all state worthy) but couldn't make a cut on a football field and were essentially useless except on slants and go routes.
