2016 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 6-20

The MLBtraderumors report of the signing says Crew is over by 5% but will not need to sacrifice a draft pick.

All items I had learned in the past and this year suggested a team could go 4.999% over and not lose a pick, but at 5% a pick is lost.

Again, I hope the crew does not lose its 1st rounder for next year but I will be watching the reports very closely...

Yes, way too early to tell. That said - where does this put the Brewers draft ratings wise?

No idea, I thought it was a below average draft when it was first completed but they signed more guys than I thought they could. McClanahan is probably better than Erceg, and he's doing well in rookie ball right now.

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

Don't know how you can say Mcclanahan is better than Erceg, but thats just me

At this point, that's unfair to Erceg, who has faced college, and now the start of pro competition, vs McClanahan, who has seen neither.

The Brewers have done a great job here, giving themselves the opportunity to find out who will have the better career, and hoping it's a photo finish.

McClanahan and Zach Clark. Outstanding news.

McClanahan at 6'5 and left handed bat. We will see if he can play third, but really if he ends up as a nice first base prospect, that's a major need.

Love some of the picks - Francisco Thomas, Payton Henry, Chad McClanahan, Zach Clark. There's some good athleticism and major upside there. I'd not be surprised if those four end up in our top

30 prospects in a couple of years. Obviously we have the more obvious prospects when you look at Erceg who has some nice two-way potential, and of course you have a top 5 pick in Ray. That's six nice athletes injected into the mix. The Puerto Rican catcher was obviously taken high so we will see on him too.

Whether the franchise can ever convert on TOR pitchers is an entirely different question.

McClanahan cost a lot more. Erceg is more polished. I don't think they would have spent so much more on McClanahan if they thought he was an inferior prospect.

I didn't say McClanahan was inferior, I said it's unfair to Erceg, who has faced better competition, to suggest McClanahan is better at this point - I stand by that.

Baseball's draft process is such a mess, I will not judge prospects based on their signing bonus, or the round they were picked in. It's just not that clean anymore. I believe Mike Fiers initially signed for $2,000 ..... I'd bet Jed Bradley got a bit more than that.

McClanahan had leverage, and he used it - good for him. He told teams he wanted to play for Arizona State, and it would cost 1.2 million to buy him out of that commitment - then he stuck to his guns. Who can blame him?

I'm thrilled to see the Brewers get both players, the team set a strategy and played it out - as far as getting talent into the system - it worked. That's what we need to see.

Whatever anyone's opinion right now, I hope both of these young men kick butt for the Brewers for years.

Since I like to complain about nice things, 1.2 million seems like alot for a guy who wasn't really on any top 100 draft prospect lists. Obviously, we don't now where he was on the only list that matters, and he was a multi-sport athlete so he may have been underrated coming in. Kudos to the Brewers for managing their bonus pool and utilizing every penny.

Also, would have liked to get more than just 1 prep arm. Maybe Crow really wants to play ball instead of play school at USD and will take $100k.

A little blown away that the Brewers spent all of that money on McClanahan (I'll trust the scouting department on this one), and then somehow inked Zach Clark as well. I would've guessed Clark's demand would be in the $250-$350k range. Apparently not. Great get. I may be in the minority, but I am a lot more excited about Clark than McClanahan.

I wonder what the alternative was

Morrison + Crow + Lillis?

Morrison + Crow + Lillis + Garcia?

Crow + Lillis + no 5% overage?

I have no idea how much money Morrison was asking for and if that had anything to do with it

The ideal answer is on draft day to have selected a couple of tougher "first round talent" signs earlier, but I'm certainly lacking specifics and this year seemed to be unique in the number of teams who were sitting on a pile of cash after pick 30 so that option wasn't really on the table. Maybe select Luzardo over Feliciano? At the end of the day, there is not much to complain about the selections after round 1 even if a few were under slot.

There is little reason to believe the Brewers deviated from their board to save cash outside of round 9 and 10 where the math makes sense too. I'd speculate the Brewers looked at their board after round 8 and decided who was highest left on their board who they could still get. Then made it happen.

I am not a fan of this FO, but there is Zero chance they blew their 2017 first round pick. I'm quite confident they stayed within the boundary of the cap over the pool money.

I think the last two drafts have been good but i waiting to see what Doug Stearns does at the tradedeadline .

I really wish we would have got the 16 rounder Crow alsways could have used another arm in this system.

Also, I'm told the Chad McClanahan contract is official. 11th rounder signed for $1.2 million, pushing Brewers over their pool allotment.

A source says Brewers 19th rounder Zach Clark's bonus was $125k. Athletic outfielder signed earlier this week, headed to AZL Brewers.

Above TH more or less says Morrison also signed.

So is it true he has two projectable 70 grade tools? If I remember correctly something like power and speed...
