2016 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 6-20

Please use this thread to share your thoughts, links, stories, pictures and anything else on the Brewers' picks on draft day from rounds 6 through 20. Please do not start separate threads to discuss the individual picks.

Please use the in-draft thread to talk about the picks, similar to a game thread.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I would expect the Crew to pick a few seniors in the next few rounds to try to free up some bonus pool. I don't foresee anyone except maybe Burns who would require over-slot, but you never know if they take a flyer on a kid who might sign for $500K but not $100K.

Edit: And of course they draft a HS catcher. Maybe that's a sign they have bonus pool available, but I don't see this kid on the MLB.com Top 200 list.

"It was great getting that attention and it motivated me even more to become the best player in the state, if not the best in the country. It was a stepping stool moment for me," Payton said. "It was a weight off my shoulders getting that first offer, but also more weight with me knowing I still needed to get that much better."

Payton went on to hit .519 his senior year while maintaining exceptional power from the plate and from the mound.

Henry is 153rd on BA's list, not ranked on MLB.com's.

From BA subscriber content:

It's not often that Utah high school position players sign out of the draft rather than heading off to college, with Henry the most likely candidate to forgo college since Seattles's 2010 2nd round pick Marcus Littlewood. The Brigham Young commit is a physical catcher with above-average raw power and very good bat speed. There's a lot of swing-and-miss when he's at the plate and scouts question about how well he will handle better velocity than he's faced this spring. Henry has improved considerably behind the plate in the past year, becoming more agile and showing an average arm. He may go off the board in the first five rounds or could be a tougher sign due to his BYU commitment.

Darrin Henry believes his son could be drafted as high as the second, third or fourth round. But there aren't any guarantees.

"A lot of teams are telling me they're interested," Payton Henry said. "So we'll have to see."

Asked how far he would have to drop in the draft to consider attending BYU and playing for coach Mike Littlewood, Henry declined to mention a specific round.

"There's definitely a little line in the sand," he said. "Obviously, the higher I go the better. … If I end up going lower [than expected], I'd think about college a little more

LOVE the Payton Henry pick..will be a tough sign I think, but I would have been fine with him much higher than this...Utah gets a bit overlooked for players at times due to elevation, but this guy was an animal his junior year especially, leafing his team to a title...

Have seen a couple people now label this Brewers draft as the best of any team, with Crawford of BP really going gaga over it...

We have the management team in place to take us to very interesting places over next decade

I think he will sign fairly quick. This is pretty close to where they (his dad & him) thought he'd go. They said the had a round in mind they were willing to go to. Overall, it sounded like he wants to play pro ball. Dad was excited he tore it up for Brewers during workout.

Daniel Brown LHP Miss St

Brown began his college career at Tyler (Texas) JC, winning the Division III Junior College World Series and the D-III juco pitcher of the year award in 2014 after leading that level in wins (10) and finishing second in strikeouts (87 in 71 2/3 innings). He transferred to Mississippi State in 2015 and opened this season in its weekend rotation before inconsistency landed him in the bullpen. He has thrived in that role, however, showing enough arm strength to go in the first five rounds. When he locates his pitches, Brown is hard to handle. He attacks hitters with a 90-94 mph fastball that's difficult to barrel if he keeps it down in the strike zone. His low-80s slider has been sharper in shorter stints and can overmatch left-handers, and he rarely uses his below-average changeup now that he's coming out of the bullpen. Brown is just 5-foot-9 and generates his hard stuff with some effort in his delivery. He doesn't always repeat his mechanics, which costs him command. Despite some success starting in the Cape Cod League last summer, he profiles strictly as a pro reliever who might be useful in high-leverage situations, especially against lefties.

Not to draw any conclusions from DS's first year, but it seems like he is going college pitchers in the draft and then tries to get the young teenagers through trades after they have a little time in the minors. Seems like a smart way to go, but as it is said, small sample size.
