Sling TV & Cord Cutting

RobDeer 45

Just got Playstation Vue, Core package.

It says I get "Fox Sports Networks" channel...I was assuming that was Fox Sports Wisconsin but it is still the generic one which is just Poker all the time...not good. Anyone know how I can get Brewers games? I know you can through the Fox Sports Go app but I was hoping to do it all through the Vue. I live in Oshkosh and it's putting me in the North East Region I wonder if I have to be closer to Milwaukee to get FS WI?

Anyone else have any luck? Looks like scrolling up others have this issue but I was hoping it was fixed by now.

What about Packers games in the fall? Will I have to get an antenna to get the local Fox station?

My parents have PS Vue, and they watch Brewers games through the Fox Sports Go App (via a Roku player). I'm admittedly curious to see how their setup works for Packers games, as my main TV is in the basement and not terribly optimal for an OTA tuner....otherwise I'd consider making the switch myself.

We have Roku devices. We downloaded the Fox Sports Go app. Once we access it, it will ask us to enter a confirmation code (follow directions on screen). After that, we were good to go. The authentication needs to be done for each device.

PlayStation Vue broadcasts WITI (Fox 6) and WDJT (58) in Milwaukee. It also provides DVR for those as well. The other Milwaukee stations haven't come on board, yet.

Downloaded the FoxSportsGo app downstairs on my Sony smart TV and yes, I'm watching the Brewers replay right now! Still would be nice to have it all in one interface in the PS Vue, but I'll deal with it for now.

Wow PS Vue has local channels in Milwaukee? That's awesome, really wish the Green Bay stations would have that...unless I haven't found them yet or it's not working properly. I might have to do a support chat with Playstation and find out.

Local stations are only available in certain markets. If you don't see your local stations that is because there is no contract with that local station at this time.

I recently moved to the MSP metro area from a rural WI area so I dropped Dish network. Right now we are running:

- Tivo DVR ($300 for subscriptionless lifetime service)

- Netflix + Amazon (was doing Prime for other reasons) = ~$20/month

- Other apps with free content (Vudu, Youtube, etc,etc...)

- MLB.TV (out of state gets me Brewer coverage as long as they aren't playing the Twins) - $80/year as I got a special deal

- NFL replay - $100: I can watch all the preseason live + Replays

- OTA TV: I get about 20 TV channels from a wimpy antenna that I installed.

So, I lost some channels we used to watch but still have way more than I need (less is more sometimes). Costs us $300 up front and about $35/month in comparison to $120/month for dish. Doing it for 6 months and already putting money back in my pocket.

Let me know if you start quoting the Five Hour Energy or Wisconsin Dells commercials while watching on FoxSportsGo.

"It is so big, I need a step ladder to see it all."

"But you're afraid of heights!"

Do you have to pay for an internet connection in order to have any of that?

I found in WI, to watch local sports, it is cheaper to buy my internet and cable from a major provider than to have a stand alone (fast connection) from a major provider and then cobble together a bunch of subscription services to get less content from more sources. I think a stand alone internet connection strong enough to run multiple streaming devices at one time is at least $50/mo.

I only have a 10Mbs connection. For full HD, you only really need around 5-6Mbs. However, if you have multiple people streaming that eats up quickly. We only have one TV running on it. If the kids are on the computer, the bandwidth gets tight.

I would agree that if you like having a lot of content, you might as well pay cable or satellite. We are more than happy with OTA, Netflix, Amazon, MLB.TV and NFL.TV. In fact, I've thought about dropping Netflix because we have more than enough to watch the way it is. Each to his own.

I get the internet, Netflix, and Amazon Prime anyway. Those things in my opinion are a wash and while they are replacements for cable, I wouldn't count them as part of the cost of replacing cable. For me it would be the cost of cable vs Hulu and Sling. If I had cable I would still need an internet connection. I would also still subscribe to Amazon Prime and Netflix.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

True, however, it's really cable/internet combo package cost - internet only cost vs Hulu and Sling, which often is only like $5-10 per month. In fact, when I tried to cut cable recently, they offered me the combo deal for less than the internet only deal I was aiming to get. Of course, that's pretty limited cable (although mine still included HBO and all the OnDemand content that comes with that) and it starts to rack back up if you start adding HD boxes and more channels, but if you're already getting internet, it usually doesn't cost much if anything to get some basic cable as well.

Interesting. I have PS Vue (La Crosse), and I get both FSWI and FSNorth (Twins/TWolves). PSVue for me is $35 with the FoxSports channels, MLB Network, NFL Network, NBA, BTN, etc. And you can add RedZone for something like $40. I also have it set to record every Brewers game in case I am busy doing something else. Cannot be happier having PS Vue.

Personally I love the ability to cancel online service whenever I want for whatever reason. Some months I will have Sling, some not, Some months Netflix, some Hulu or WWE network. It all depends on what I want to watch, how much time I have and what offers these companies are giving me to come back. Plus I don't have to pay cable's monthly fee for HD boxes, remotes, FCC charges and the like. It was always a pain to cancel cable as well, with these streaming services it is just a click of the button. My antenna picks up the local stations great too.

This is sort of what I was talking about. It is a lot of rigamarole to save $5-10 bucks a month, when if it were that big of a deal I could just brew extra coffee at home every morning and take it to work vs. buying a fresh one at the coffee shop across the street and save that much and more. I pay for Charter Spectrum Cable and Internet package. It's like $130 a month. I hate it, but I dont have to hunt and peck to find my local and sometimes national sports. I watch a ton of Brewers and Badgers, and I watch a lot of hockey, which is NBCSN and FOX Sports North, both of which I get on cable and would be blacked out on other deals.

For local news, I also prefer Fox11 in Green Bay for their local high school sports coverage, and being in Oshkosh it doesnt come in at all with an antenna. So its a no brainer for me to go with Charter.

I'm loving Vue right now and no cable but...my wife is having a hard time finding her favorite channels/shows on it. Lifetime Movies, Hallmark Channel that kind of stuff. Any of the streaming services have these channels? I don't even think Vue has CBS in Oshkosh. Our bedroom does not have a smart tv, only a ps4 hooked up to it maybe one of those roku/chrome/fire sticks have these apps built in or available for purchase?

She wants to cave and just get cable but I hate how every year your bill just goes up and up...then you switch to the other cable for a year or two and do the same thing again and again. Can't stand that. I like the no contracts aspect and really want her to as well thanks for the help.

Sling has Hallmark, but I'm not sure about Lifetime. Many of the Netflix/Amazone/Hulu are picking up Hallmark TV series also. Depending on if she wants to wait or not.

I was in a spot where Dish was the only logical choice for our location. But after moving, I was able to pick up a lot more OTA and that helped make the change. I'm saving ~$100/month so its certainly worth it for me.

I thought so too until a few weeks ago. You can now change your Comcast package right on their web page. Used to have to call them but now you can just check or uncheck boxes.

We have HBO Now, Showtime, Sling, Amazon Prime, and Netflix. More than enough to keep us occupied. I'll probably ditch Showtime and Sling once we are done with Homeland and the football season is over with.

  • 2 months later...

Update for anyone thinking of getting Vue in the Fox Valley. They just added Fox 11 and NBC 26 as local channels from Green Bay. So this means now you get most local football, baseball, and basketball on Vue.

We play $5 a month for CBS all access which gives you the local CBS station for NFL games on there as well as other shows. Hope they add CBS and ABC eventually too.

For Brewers and Bucks you watch through the Fox Sports Go app, not through Vue. But you log into the app with your Vue login it's confusing but hey you get the shows included, just wish they were on Vue in this area instead of just the app.

For those who once had Directv or Dish and cut the cord but want local channels free, I highly recommend just installing an antenna on your roof. You can get a good 150 mile range one online for 25 bucks or so. You won't get 150 miles, but it'll do a lot better than the short range indoor ones. I live in Wisconsin Rapids and get NBC out of Eau Claire with no issues, which is almost 100 miles away.

Since all of the existing coaxial from your dish should still be in place it's an easy installation, just take your dish down and use the existing base for your antenna, you may need a pipe for more elevation if you're not getting good enough reception but that's about it. I am by no means a handyman and it was a breeze.

Of course if you live in a big city you can probably get by with the smaller indoor antennas.
