Houser shaking inconsistent start to season

Dekota Gregory, Pryor Daily Times (OK) Sports Correspondent

Right-handed pitcher Adrian Houser was a jack-of-all-trades Monday night for the Milwaukee Brewers Double-A affiliate Biloxi Shuckers.

Houser stepped in the batter’s box in the fifth inning and delivered a triple off the wall to score Javier Betancourt from first base. The RBI was Houser’s first since his senior season at Locust Grove High School in 2011. He scored moments later and was responsible for more runs than his opponent, Miami Marlins affiliate, the Jacksonville Suns, in the 9-1 victory at MGM Park in Biloxi.

“It’s definitely pretty fun to get to hit again,” Houser said.

Houser (2-3) did most of his damage on the mound to pick up his second win of the season. He put his season back in the right direction with a six-inning outing, which tied his season high. Houser allowed one run on three hits and struck out five batters.

It was Houser’s best outing since he tossed five hitless innings April 16 against, Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate, the Mobile BayBears. Houser was pulled after five innings when his pitch count reached 86.

Houser’s season has been inconsistent thus far, which is why his ERA sits at 7.20 through six starts. He’s given up seven runs in two starts, but both times bounced back with his best performances of the season. Houser started the season by allowing seven runs in a six-inning performance April 9, but notched five hitless innings seven days later.

In his start before Monday’s outing, Houser gave up seven runs in four innings to, Cincinnati Reds affiliate, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. He allowed seven hits and struck out nine batters in the game.

Houser ended last season with a 2.92 ERA for Biloxi before he was called up to pitch for the Brewers in September.

“I feel like (the season) has gone better than it looks because my numbers aren’t that good right now, but I’m accomplishing some things that I’ve been working on and have been throwing the ball well,” Houser said. “It could be a little bit of (inconsistency). My last two games, though, I feel like that they have been pretty consistent. I just had a little bad luck in one of them. With the stuff I’m working on, things should be turning around for me soon.”

Cedar Rapids Beats Wisconsin 14-6

David Denson went 1-for-3 with a walk, a homer, two RBI, and two runs scored for the Rattlers on Saturday afternoonl (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

Wisconsin Boxscore

Bah! A second consecutive game I turned off early.

The good: David Lucroy pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, David Denson went yard as noted above, and Alan Sharkey had a big (at the time) double. As I really like Alan I hope he finds some springboard to sustained success.

The bad: 4 of the 5 pitchers gave up runs and no Rattler managed more than 1 hit, in a game with this kind of pitching it had better be a slug fest or there's no hope.

Wisconsin Recap

At least the 4th inning provided some temporary relief.

Wisconsin Bottom of the 4th

  • Blake Allemand pops out to shortstop Sean Miller.
    Isan Diaz walks.
Mitch Ghelfi singles on a line drive to left fielder LaMonte Wade. Isan Diaz to 2nd.
Jake Gatewood singles on a line drive to center fielder Christian Cavaness. Isan Diaz to 3rd. Mitch Ghelfi to 2nd.
David Denson walks. Isan Diaz scores. Mitch Ghelfi to 3rd. Jake Gatewood to 2nd.
Monte Harrison singles on a line drive to center fielder Christian Cavaness. Mitch Ghelfi scores. Jake Gatewood scores. David Denson to 2nd.
Alan Sharkey doubles (1) on a line drive to center fielder Christian Cavaness. David Denson scores. Monte Harrison scores.
Carlos Belonis called out on strikes.
Trent Clark grounds out, pitcher Dereck Rodriguez to first baseman J. Fernandez.

Shuckers win streak snapped in 5-2 loss to Lookouts

Jacob Nottingham and Nick Shaw extend hitting streaks on Saturday

Garrett Cooper was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI on Saturday night (Jason Clark)

Biloxi Boxscore

Biloxi outhit Chattanooga 12-9 but just couldn't string together enough hits after the first 2 innings. Unfortunately in hind sight the game was over after the first when Adrian Houser gave up single, double, and a HR to the first 3 batters. It actually could have been worse because he walked the 4th hitter and the 5th lined into a double play, it wasn't a good start. All told Houser went 6.1 innings and gave up 5 runs, his ERA still sits at 7+ and the sample size isn't so small anymore.

Garrett Cooper (2-4,2B), Jacob Nottingham (2-4), and Nick Shaw (2-4) had the multi-hit games. Nottingham has creeped his AVE up to .221, he's hitting .283 over his last 10 game. Shucker batters did strike out 14 times to opposing pitcher D.J. Baxendale who isn't a top 30 prospect in the Twins organization but is showing some promise.

Brevard County Box Score

Following the 10 strikeout outing RHP Brandon Woodruff leads the Florida State League in K's with 49 over 44.1 innings pitched. Woodruff has a 1.83 ERA on the season and a sub-1.00 WHIP (0.97 to be exact). In addition to the quality game story, Donald also added on Twitter (via @TeesReport) that Woodruff's fastball was touching 96-mph on the stadium gun throughout the game. Woodruff also did not issue a walk and nearly 75% of his pitches were strikes (60 strikes on 81 pitches).

Noted birthday boy LHP Brad Kuntz also struckout four over 1.2 innings of work.

Brevard County Game Log

As mentioned in the game notes 2B George Iskenderian left the game with an injury that the Dunedin radio broadcast team speculated as possibly being a hamstring issue. Of course as noted in the game story, Iskenderian's replacement SS Jose Cuas provided an offensive spark for the Manatees.

The rough outing for rehabbing Blue Jays major league reliever Aaron Loup left his ERA at a whopping 108.00 (yes, just a single recorded out sample size)...

Southern League OPS Leaders:

2. Nicky Delmonico, 1.020

4. Mitch Haniger, .934

6. Garrett Cooper, .900

10. Brett Phillips, .834

Tom Haudricourt's February 13, 2015 report --

The Brewers have released third base prospect Nick Delmonico, ending his short but troubled time with the organization.

Delmonico, 22, is still under a 50-game suspension for testing positive for an amphetamine late last July. Baseball America reported he has been signed by the Chicago White Sox.

Delmonico was acquired from Baltimore in exchange for reliever Francisco Rodriguez in late July 2013 and immediately was listed among the Brewers' top prospects. The organization had a void at that position and it was hoped he would rise through the system and fulfill his potential.

But Delmonico missed minor-league camp last spring for what the Brewers termed "personal reasons." He later reported to Class A Brevard County but played in only 37 games before being suspended. Delmonico was batting .262 with four homers, 15 RBI and a .300 OBP but hadn't played since July 7 when his suspension was announced on July 28.

Brewers farm director Reid Nichols said Delmonico was released because the organization had lost contact with him.

"We couldn't contact him," said Nichols. "He wouldn't return calls. We couldn't find him.

"With all the maintenance, we didn't feel like he was a major-league prospect. So, the work wasn't worth it. It was too much to deal with. There was a lot going on there."

As for Delmonico signing with the White Sox, Nichols said, "I hope it works out for him. Maybe this woke him up."

Originally selected in the sixth round of the 2012 draft by the Orioles, Delmonico has a .245 batting average with 28 home runs, 108 RBI and a .340 OBP in 214 games over three years in the minors spanning both levels of Class A ball.

Home run # 6 for the LH-hitting Delmonico on Wednesday - I, too, believe there's much that we don't know, however, with the option for the restricted list option for non-reporting, there will always be room for second-guessing. Guess we'll truly be able to pout should he reach the majors, although Delmonico has value even now in trade should the White Sox pursue that option, which is more than the Brewers have at this time.
