I live about 1/2 hour north of Colorado Springs - I can't imagine them playing today. We got 2 feet of snow over the weekend and the high temperature is in the upper 30s. And Colorado Springs is expected to get a bit of rain/snow later today.

We got 2 feet of snow over the weekend.

...wow!

Yeah, and I'm not even up in the mountains. As noted, some people were getting 3-4 feet of snow.

Luckily, it had been warm last week, and it never got too cold when it snowed, so things are melting quickly.

Supposed to be 70 degrees this weekend! Wahoo!

Rattlers score five in first to beat Quad Cities

Marcos Diplan allowed an unearned run on one hit and struck out six over four innings on Monday night for the Rattlers. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

Postgame Post – April 18, 2016

Wisconsin Boxscore

Quad Cities is awful, at least to start the season, they are 2-10 in the early going.

I mention that because was it superb pitching or very poor hitting? Rattler pitchers gave up more walks than hits (4-3) while striking out 11 in this game. Marcus Diplan was especially impressive striking out 6 of those 11 batters in just 4 innings, though it did take him 76 pitches to do so.

Monte Harrison (2-4) and Isan Diaz (2-3,BB) led the way offensively with 2 hits apiece. For those of you prospect watching Harrison is inching his AVE up, now .222 and Jake Gatewood is currently sitting at .217 going the other way.

In this cold, nobody wanted to play two.

After the Sky Sox breezed through a seven-inning victory in 1 hour, 43 minutes Monday, the teams and umpires met and decided that was enough for the day and postponed the second game of the doubleheader.

"Nobody was disappointed, I'll put it that way," said Sky Sox right fielder Alex Presley, whose third-inning single put Colorado Springs up for good on Memphis in the 3-1 victory. "Everybody wants to play, but certain situations make it miserable for everybody. Nobody was disappointed that we got to leave and get warm."

What was supposed to be a four-game series against the Redbirds to open the home season at Security Service Field was instead limited to two games - a frigid, windblown 10-9 Memphis victory on Friday night and Monday's shortened game. Triple-A doubleheaders consist of two seven-inning games, which is the reason Monday's game didn't go nine innings.

The teams will play doubleheaders June 22-23 when Memphis returns for what will now be a six-game, four-day series.

Official attendance was announced at 1,381, but an in-game hand count put the actual number of people in the stadium at around 100. One toddling young fan had no competition when he climbed several rows of seats in pursuit of a foul ball.

All things considered, everything cooperated Monday. The temperatures were in the mid-30s, but there was little wind and no precipitation during the game and the field was dry thanks to about six hours of snow shoveling by the Sky Sox grounds crew and staff Sunday. What's more, the pitchers stayed in the strike zone and issued just one combined walk - a free pass to Brewers top prospect Orlando Arcia, who scored a run and collected a hit for the Sky Sox. The pace was a major departure from the 3 hours, 40 minutes it took to complete Friday's opener.

"You get pitches to hit, too, so it's a win-win," said Presley, who has played parts of the past six seasons with Pittsburgh, Minnesota and Houston in the major leagues and is batting .344 so far for the Sky Sox. "I don't think anybody enjoys slow-paced baseball in general."

It was with all-too fresh memories of Friday's long opener that officials decided not to push it and play a second game with the threat of inclement weather on the way.

"What we went through the other night was absolutely miserable, by far," Sky Sox manager Rick Sweet said. "The last thing we want to do is start hurting people, and that's what we're close to doing if we start pushing them this much in this cold weather. And it was cold out there.

"Literally, a couple guys got windburn on their face," Sweet added. "That's how bad it was opening night."

Monday's game started ominously for the Sky Sox. Memphis opened with a double and single and led 1-0 before an out was recorded. But that's all the damage that was done as Hiram Burgos went five innings, allowing four hits and no walks while striking out five. Austin Ross and Damien Magnifico each pitched scoreless innings in relief, with Magnifico notching his third save.

Final: St. Lucie 9, Brevard County 4

St. Lucie bounces back against Manatees

Donald Rieber, Jr., Manatees Examiner

*****

Brevard County Box Score

Manatees bats managed 8 hits, all singles. Multi-hit games from Johnny Davis (2-for-4), Angel Ortega (2-for-3), and Dustin Houle (2-for-4).

Manatees pitchers Angel Ventura, Kender Villegas, and Josh Uhen combined to give up 16 hits and 8 walks. Ventura lasted only 2.1 innings in which he threw 75 pitches giving up 7 hits, 2 walks and 3 runs.

Brevard County Game Log

The Manatees first three batters of the game reached base via a comedy of errors. It started with a bunt directly to the pitcher that was thrown off target, then a "single" where the ball got caught up in the third baseman's glove webbing, followed by a double play ball that went between the second baseman's legs. After a start like that it was a huge victory for St. Lucie to survive the inning only giving up one run.

Brevard County Top of the First

Johnny Davis reaches on a throwing error by pitcher Casey Delgado.

Angel Ortega singles on a ground ball to third baseman Jhoan Urena. Johnny Davis to 2nd.

Dustin DeMuth reaches on a fielding error by second baseman Luis Guillorme. Johnny Davis scores. Angel Ortega to 3rd.

Clint Coulter strikes out swinging.

George Iskenderian grounds into a double play, second baseman Luis Guillorme to shortstop Amed Rosario to first baseman Michael Katz. Dustin DeMuth out at 2nd

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Watched a few innings of both Hader and Freddy Peralta last night. Hader's stuff is still filthy, but he's running Gallardo-esque pitch counts. Of the things that will hold him back from being a front line starter, or even a starter, needing 20 pitches to get through every inning is one of them. He also threw a handful of pitches that weren't even close, though fatigue may have had something to do with it.

As for Peralta, I didn't hear a radar gun reading from Chris, but it looked to me like he was pitching somewhere in the high 80/low 90 range with his fastball. He appeared to be throwing both a 2-seam and 4-seam fastball. I didn't see any sharp breaking stuff, but I could have missed it. He was generally around the zone and was getting swings and misses in the zone. He got squeezed on a number of pitches, so I wouldn't read too much into the 3 walks.

This continues to be the concern with Hader as a starter.

5 K's through 3 IP for @jhader17, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB. But the pitch count is really high again at 63 after 3.

I dont think missing bats is every a concern.....as long as the walks are low.

May the inability to go deep into games makes him a #2 instead of a #1. If the guy can dominate for 5-6 innings and hand it over to the pen, i'm happy.
