Josh Hader day is the best day

We know Davies is making his final AAA tune up today and will make his next start for Brewers on Sunday. Will Hader be replacing him in the Colorado Springs rotation? Davies will have avoided having to make a start at altitude.

How long will the Brewers go with Peralta before he's banished to the pen and replaced by Lopez or Hader or would they just bring Capuano in out of the pen?

JohnBriggs, why demote Peralta in a year in which expectations are low? If we're going to stink, we might as well let kids have a chance to work through struggles. We stuck with an awful Gomez for a number of years.

Final: Fort Myers 2, Brevard County 1

Manatees drop 2-1 decision at Fort Myers

Donald Rieber, Jr., Manatees Examiner

For the best available game recap check out the link above.

*****

Brevard County Box Score

Not a lot of notable items on the offensive end, but I guess collecting only four team hits (all singles) will do that. Also as noted in the linked game article, the first 16 Brevard County batters failed to reach base. Angel Ortega did manage to hit 2-for-3. For other details on the Manatees offensive production please proceed with caution to the box score link.

Things were a bit more encouraging on the pitching side. Despite some first inning trouble highlighted by a two-run home run for Fort Myers, Brandon Woodruff battled back to post a quality start. Woodruff pitched 6.0 innings allowing seven hits, two runs, zero walks while striking out seven batters.

Josh Uhen came in and pitched 2.0 innings of relief giving up two hits and one walk. Uhen struck out three Miracle players and per the radio broadcast was throwing a "nasty slider" that was tough on hitters.

Brevard County Game Log

Woodruff finished his outing strong in the 6th inning. After giving up a lead off walk he picked off former first round (5th overall) draft pick Nick Gordon and followed it up by sending the next two batters down swinging.

Fort Myers Bottom of the 6th

Nick Gordon singles on a line drive to center fielder Brandon Diaz.

With T. J. White batting, Brandon Woodruff picks off Nick Gordon at 1st on throw to Taylor Brennan.

T. J. White strikes out swinging.

Alex Real strikes out swinging.

One final rally fell short with speedster Johnny Davis on base as a pitch runner.

Brevard County Top of the 9th

Pitching Change: Todd Van Steensel replaces Yorman Landa.

Dustin DeMuth flies out to center fielder Tanner English.

Clint Coulter flies out to center fielder Tanner English.

Dustin Houle walks.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Johnny Davis replaces Dustin Houle.

With Taylor Brennan batting, Johnny Davis steals (2) 2nd base.

Taylor Brennan strikes out swinging.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Bees defeat Rattlers 7-2

Burlington continues its spell over Wisconsin

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Wisconsin Boxscore

This ended up being kind of stinker, and I had to work late so I wasn't able to catch any of the radio broadcast and have no idea why Troy Stokes left early other than "injured ankle" in the game log:

Wisconsin Top of the 3rd

  • Carlos Belonis bunt grounds out, third baseman Michael Pierson to first baseman Jared Walsh.
Troy Stokes Jr. reaches on a throwing error by shortstop Juan Moreno.
Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Monte Harrison replaces Troy Stokes Jr.
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers left fielder Troy Stokes Jr. left the game due to an injured ankle.
Tucker Neuhaus singles on a line drive to center fielder Jordan Serena. Monte Harrison to 2nd.
Isan Diaz walks. Monte Harrison to 3rd. Tucker Neuhaus to 2nd.
Max McDowell flies out to center fielder Jordan Serena on the infield fly rule.
David Denson singles on a ground ball to center fielder Jordan Serena. Monte Harrison scores. Tucker Neuhaus scores. Isan Diaz to 2nd.
Jake Gatewood grounds into a force out, shortstop Juan Moreno to second baseman Brendon Sanger. David Denson out at 2nd.

This paragraph from the game story pretty much sums it up:

Wisconsin's offense, which had seven hits off starting pitcher Jose Rodriguez did not fare as well against the Burlington bullpen. Luis Pena entered the game in the top of the sixth and recorded all nine of his outs via the strikeout, including the last eight in a row. The only Rattler to reach against Pena was Alan Sharkey, who walked with one out in the sixth

Tucker Neuhaus (2-4) who is having an awesome start to the season had the only multi hit game, he's hitting .412 thus far.

Conor Harber rebounded from his tough outing the other day and was the only pitcher who didn't allow an earned run going 1.2 innings with 4 SOs, 1H, 1R, 0ER, and 1BB.

Final: Biloxi 2, Mobile 1, 13 innings

Nottingham delivers walk-off homer in 13th inning Tuesday

Shuckers win third straight and improve to 5-1 on young season

BILOXI, MS. - Jacob Nottingham launched the first pitch of the bottom of the 13th inning into the netting over MGM Park's left-field wall to send the Biloxi Shuckers home winners on Tuesday night, 2-1 over the Mobile BayBears. The Shuckers' victory puts them at 5-1, matching the Pensacola Blue Wahoos for the best start in the Southern League.

Nottingham rips 13th-inning homer to give Shuckers dramatic win over Mobile

Patrick Magee, Biloxi Sun-Herald

BILOXI – When Shuckers catcher Jacob Nottingham stepped to the plate to lead off the bottom of the 13th Tuesday night, he had one hit in his first 18 at-bats of the year – a 2-run home run in the second game of the season.

Make that two hits and two homers for Nottingham in 2016.

The power-hitting catcher ripped the first pitch he saw in the 13th well over the left field fence to hand the Shuckers a 2-1 win over the rival Mobile BayBears at MGM Park Tuesday night.

The big blast capped nearly four hours of baseball before a crowd of 1,280 on a damp night.

“I was just trying to put the ball in play,” Nottingham said. “I've been struggling a little bit, just trying to do too much. I just tried to believe in myself, get a good pitch and put it in play. I tried, did it and everything came out good.”

The homer pushed Nottingham's batting average to just .105, but it's obvious that the former Houston Astros and Oakland A's minor leaguer is as talented as any player on the Shuckers roster.

He's hit three homers at MGM Park this year, one of them coming in an April 2 exhibition game against the Major League parent club Milwaukee Brewers.

“I think he's just been pressing a little bit,” Shuckers manager Mike Guerrero said. “We've just played six games. It's a long season. I think he's going to be fine. He knows he's got pop. He just stayed within himself. He's going to be awesome. He's going to be a pretty good player. He's just learning to take it one day at a time.”

Five Shuckers pitchers combined to hold Mobile to one run on nine hits in 13 innings.

Josh Hader had a nice showing in his second start of the season, giving up one run on four hits in five innings. He struck out seven and walked none as he did a good job of keeping the ball in the strike zone. Of his 87 pitches, 64 were for strikes.

Steve Peterson (2-0) picked up his second win in relief this season by throwing two perfect innings.

Tristan Archer, Drew Gagnon and Hobbs Johnson each pitched two scoreless innings to keep the Shuckers alive.

“Everybody threw the ball well,” Guerrero said. “They followed the game plan. That's an accomplishment. You've got to praise the bullpen. They held out. There wasn't much left out there, but they did a pretty good job.”

While Nottingham has had some struggles at the plate early, he's proven solid behind the plate.

“This pitching staff is awesome,” Nottingham said. “I can't ask for a better pitching staff. They're easy to work with, just a bunch of good guys. It's easy to be around them. They make my job better.”

The Shuckers (5-1) will close out their seven-game home stand at 6:40 p.m. on Wednesday against Mobile.

Biloxi will go with right-hander Javi Salas (1-0, 1.59) and Mobile will counter with right-hander Yoan Lopez (0-0, 1.50).

There were a lot of swings and misses by both teams Tuesday night as they combined for a total of 30 strikeouts.

Mobile starting pitcher Anthony Banda, kept the Shuckers off balance early. He gave up one run on five hits, striking out nine in five innings.

Garrett Cooper kept up his early-season clutch performance at the plate, knocking in the first run of the game for the Shuckers in the third inning.

Tyrone Taylor singled and Nate Orf walked to begin the bottom of the third. Brett Phillips and Nottingham followed with strikeouts, putting the pressure on Cooper to deliver.

He responded with a hard hit grounder through the right side of the infield to bring home Taylor for the 1-0 lead.

Mobile tied the game in the fifth when Ronnie Freeman led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch in the dirt by Hader with Dan Rohlfing at the plate.

Rohlfing brought home Freeman with an RBI single up the middle to make it 1-1 through five innings.

The game moved to extra innings and the Shuckers seemed in good shape to finish off the BayBears when Taylor reached to lead off the 10th on a throwing error by third baseman Gabriel Noriega.

Mobile right-hander Matt Stites retired the next three batters to keep the BayBears alive.

Mobile also had a chance in the top of the 11th after Kevin Cron doubled to lead things off, but Shuckers lefty Hobbs Johnson retired the next three men to end the threat.

Biloxi made a mistake on the base paths in the bottom of the 11th when Cooper tried to take home from second on a single to left by Chris McFarland.

Cooper was easily gunned down at home by Rohlfing from left field and Kyle Wren struck out swinging to end the inning.

Nottingham's blast in the 13th made up for what was far from a perfect night for the Shuckers.

“I feel a little better,” he said. “I've still got a lot of work to do. This is just a good start. I can't wait to keep going.”

Taylor was the only Biloxi player with multiple hits, going 3-for-6 with a run scored out of the lead-off spot.

Biloxi Box Score

Shucker pitchers combined to walk one and strike out 15 in the 13 innings -- wow!

Nate Orf, playing third base in this one, was 0-for-3 but walked three times, lifting his line to .350/.481/.450 (.931 OPS). We had mentioned Brevard County catcher Dustin Houle as a projected 40-man roster add earlier this week; look for the versatile Orf to be added September 1st and get his big league debut then.

1B Garrett Cooper (1.193 OPS) reached base three more times, it's not helping the cause to have he and Nick Ramirez on the same roster, especially in non-designated hitter series like this one.

Not just old friend Anthony Banda, but trade buddy OF Mitch Haniger in town, 0-for-5 with a walk. Haniger is plateauing at the AA level, while Banda, in his age 22 season, continues to thrive. Darn you, Ray Montgomery, who plucked the lefty Banda away in the Gerardo Parra deal while with the Diamondbacks.

Biloxi Game Log

Early Biloxi futility in the first two innings, then this later on --

Biloxi Bottom of the 8th

Tyrone Taylor singles on a fly ball to left fielder Dan Rohlfing.

Nate Orf walks. Tyrone Taylor to 2nd.

Pitching Change: Daniel Gibson replaces Nick Sarianides, batting 5th.

Brett Phillips out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Daniel Gibson to first baseman Kevin Cron. Tyrone Taylor to 3rd. Nate Orf to 2nd.

Daniel Gibson intentionally walks Jacob Nottingham.

Tyrone Taylor out at home, catcher Ronnie Freeman to pitcher Daniel Gibson. Nate Orf to 3rd. Jacob Nottingham to 2nd.

Garrett Cooper walks.

Victor Roache strikes out swinging.

Final: Colorado Springs 4, Nashville 3

Sky Sox Hold On To Defeat Sounds 4-3

Michael Reed drives home winning run in eighth inning to help Sky Sox even series

By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

We're lucky to have the timely game summaries from our affiliates, detailed and well-written; are you still thrown off by all the Nashville mentions? Don't worry, you're not alone...

Colorado Springs Box Score

68 pitches for RHP Zach Davies in his tune-up for Sunday's big league start; when you add his big league camp work (remember this post) to his 2016 AAA efforts thus far, shaggy minor league phase Rule 5 find LHP Mitch Lambson has allowed all of one baserunner to reach in six innings. Congratulations Damien Magnifico on that first AAA save.

RHP Chris Smith still around...

Colorado Springs Game Log

Michael Reed, batting third, stole his 3rd base of the young season, and is off to a fantastic start -- Keon Broxton needs to show something soon, he's looked overmatched, as you big league followers now.

All eight of Orlando Arcia's hits have been singles, but his early line is still pretty.
