Come on board!

If you'd like to be a Link Report contributor, feel free to drop me a note via this Brewerfan Forum private message link.

In particular, we're seeking "part-time" contributors who can job-share when others need much-deserved time off. At most, you'd be responsible for linking to a single box score / game log / game summary for the night, and (hopefully) pointing out any specifics of interest in the box that the summary may have overlooked.

NOTE: We have made the decision that for game summaries this season, we will be linking directly to the affiliate website (as we always did), but not simultaneously copying and pasting here, which was one of the more tedious aspects of Link Reporting in the past.

Next-morning newspaper reports will often be treated similarly, as well as any blog posts we come across.

Thanks.

I live in Slinger which is a good hour away from Appleton but if weather here is an indication, T-Rats made a bad decision postponing the game a day (unless it had to do with travel). It's still chilly but been sunny, mild wind, and much better than most of the day's the past week. Tomorrow is suppose to be near 50 but rain all day. So hopefully they are able to get the double header in

MiLB plays games with their links when posting their highlights, I guess the Nottingham HR morphed into the Phillips HR during the course of the day. To make sure everyone sees both (plus a fine Michael Reed catch for the Sky Sox), here you go --

Has anyone else been able to get the Daytona Tortugas (Brevard County game) TuneIn Radio feed to work? For the second day in a row I am getting an error message when I try to play the audio stream. Curious if it's just me or a larger problem?

EDIT: It's now back up and running! Thanks Mass Haas for confirming it wasn't just me. :)

Houle making noise. Listed at 6'1" and 205. Kind of a mini Nottingham.

Announcer just mentioned the exit velo on the Houle bomb was 130 MPH. That would be a record I believe. Did I hear him wrong? No way Houle can hit it that hard.

You didn't mishear, that is exactly what they said. They claimed an exit velocity of 130-mph on Houle's home run to left field.

Based on the fact the top exit velocity on a batted ball in MLB all of last year was 120-mph, there is reason to be plenty skeptical. They mentioned they were using Trackman data tonight. Maybe they just misread or misspoke?

Sounds like a blooper fell in over Allemand to give up 2 of Kodi's run but outside of he's been pretty locked in. Have to remember he is youngest kid in whole league which makes everything even more impressive

Final: Brevard County 9, Daytona 6

Medeiros Masterful in 'Tees debut

Brevard County Box Score

Brevard County gets the nod as Saturday's Link Report "Affiliate of the Day" after collecting 15 hits and a solid performance from one of the organizations top pitching prospects.

Not going to bury the lede here, Kodi Medeiros was good tonight. By accounts courtesy of the Daytona broadcast team, Medeiros displayed composure and confidence on the mound while effectively using his three pitch mix (fastball, slider, changeup). They also raved about how well he hid the ball in his delivery. The youngest player in the Florida State League was getting swing and miss on his fastball. On a second inning strikeout his fastball was clocked at 96-mph. While it was mentioned multiple times that he was working mid-90's with the heater, as the innings wore on the fastball speeds mentioned were falling (92-mph in the 3rd, 91-mph in the 5th).

Medeiros recorded seven strikeouts over 5.0 innings in which he threw 52 of his 82 pitches for strikes. Kodi gave up five hits and three walks. Four of the five hits allowed came with runners already on base which I believe has been a trend for him in the past.

For as good as Medeiros was tonight, an unfortunate sequence in the 5th inning skews the box score by showing somewhat deceivingly that he was tagged for three earned runs. Medeiros worked four scoreless innings to begin the night. In the 5th inning he recorded two outs before giving up a walk and a hit, then running into a string of bad luck.

Brevard County Game Log

Exhibit A the game log for bottom frame in the 5th with further explanation below....

Daytona Bottom of the 5th

Avain Rachal strikes out swinging.

Garrett Boulware pops out to second baseman Blake Allemand.

Ty Washington walks.

Jonathan Reynoso singles on a line drive to left fielder Brandon Diaz. Ty Washington to 2nd.

Blake Trahan singles on a line drive to second baseman Blake Allemand. Ty Washington scores. Jonathan Reynoso to 2nd.

Brian O'Grady singles on a pop up to second baseman Blake Allemand. Jonathan Reynoso scores. Blake Trahan scores. Brian O'Grady to 2nd on the throw.

Aristides Aquino walks.

Angelo Gumbs strikes out swinging.

With two outs and two baserunners a line drive was hit at Manatees second baseman Blake Allemand. According to the broadcast Allemand was shielded by the umpire (who reportedly almost took the ball in the head) and Allemand had the ball hit him in the torso. The hit allowed the first earned run to score. Then the next batter in the inning, Brian O'Grady, hit a shallow pop fly into right field that got Allemand turned around allowing the ball to drop and two runs to score. While it was tallied as a hit, the Daytona broadcast team mentioned that Allemand appeared to be "waiting for Coulter to call him off" and seemed like he "lost it in the night's sky and it fell behind him".

A little long winded on Medeiros' night, so onto some of the other impressive performances.

Nice to see the Manatees bats get going early and often, especially considering they were facing Reds pitching prospect Keury Mella who runs it into the mid-90's himself. The 'Tees recorded eight hits off Mella in just over three innings.

Canadian catcher Dustin Houle not only hit a no doubter home run documented earlier in the Link Report, but also finished the night going 3-for-5 with four RBIs.

Three Manatees have now his safely in all three games this season, Angel Ortega (3-for-6), Dustin DeMuth (1-for-3, BB), and George Iskenderian (2-for-5, 2B).

Other multi-hit games from Johnny Davis (2-for-6, 2B, 3B), Jose Cuas (2-for-4, 2B, BB), and Brandon Diaz (2-for-5, SB).

Tough night at the plate for Clint Coulter who was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

On the defensive side Cuas was credited with a nice defensive play charging a soft chopper by Reds prospect Blake Trahan throwing him out just in time. Also Davis made a leaping catch in center to rob a Daytona hit.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Chattanooga Lookouts explode for nine runs in win over Biloxi

by Patrick Ochs, Biloxi Sun-Herald

BILOXI -- Fans saw plenty of fireworks Saturday night at MGM Park -- just not the kind they were probably hoping for.

After the visiting Chattanooga Lookouts rode a six-run third inning to a 9-5 victory over the Biloxi Shuckers, a season-high 3,673 fans in attendance were treated to a grandiose pyrotechnic display high above the Beau Rivage.

The Lookouts' surge was a big change after the Shuckers (2-1) out-scored their visitors in the first two games 10-2.

"I think there were plays that should have been made and pitches that should have been executed," Shuckers manager Mike Guerrero said. "They shouldn't have scored six runs in that inning. It just happened."

Shuckers starter Adrian Houser (0-1) was tuned up by the Lookouts for the second time in as many meetings.

The right-hander surrendered five runs in 4 2/3 innings in last year's Southern League Championship Series against the Twins' Double-A affiliate. Saturday, he was saddled with seven runs on nine hits and one walk in six innings. He also struck out five.

Despite facing the minimum through two innings, things got away from him in the third.

Second baseman Levi Michael scorched a run-scoring triple into the right field corner to get Chattanooga on the scoreboard. Shortstop Engelb Vielma and first baseman D.J. Hicks each singled in runs, followed by a run-scoring groundout from right fielder Travis Harrison. Left fielder Joe Maloney punctuated the inning with a two-run double off the right field wall.

Houser settled in after the rough inning, retiring the next nine Lookouts in order until the sixth. Catcher Stuart Turner reached with two outs in the sixth on a light hit down the first base line that stayed just fair. The former Ole Miss Rebel later scored on a single up the middle by Michael to push the Lookouts' lead to 7-3.

The Lookouts tacked on two more runs in the eighth on singles by Turner and Michael.

The offensive explosion was welcomed for a Lookouts team that mustered just two runs on seven hits in the first two games of the series. Just two games into the season, Mientkiewicz could already sense his team pressing to break out of its early offensive funk.

"When you don't have any at-bats, every game magnifies," Mientkiewicz said. "The hardest one to get is always the first one. Once you get the first one you usually settle down a little bit.

"When you look up two games in a row in the fifth inning and you're being no-hit, you could smell them squeezing the grains out of the bat."

Shuckers summary

Right fielder Kyle Wren led off the bottom of the first with a triple and later scored on a fly ball to right by second baseman Nate Orf.

The Shuckers took advantage of two errors in the second, pushing their lead to 2-0, and added a third run in the fifth on a single by designated hitter Brett Phillips.

Third baseman Brandon Macias stroked a two-run double into the right-center gap in the eighth, bringing the Shuckers within four, 9-5.

The Shuckers had several other chances with runners in scoring position but were unable to break through the same way the Lookouts did.

"We swung at a lot of pitches. We chased a lot of pitches out of the strike zone," Guerrero said. "When you do that and expand the zone, it's pretty difficult and that's what happened."

Chattanooga starter David Hurlbut (1-0) earned the win, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks.

Michael and Turner each had three hits in the game, with the Lookouts second baseman driving in a game-high three runs. Wren was the lone Shucker with two hits. He also scored twice.

Next up

The Shuckers will continue their five-game set against Chattanooga at 1:10 p.m. Sunday. Biloxi will send left-hander Wei-Chung Wang to the mound to face right-hander Aaron Slegers.

Extra bases

New shortstop Javier Betancourt tallied his first Double-A hit in the seventh with a screamer back up the middle.

Final: Memphis 4, Colorado Springs 0

Sky Sox Bats Stymied in 4-0 Shutout

Redbirds pitchers combine to give up just three hits to win second straight game

By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

***

Colorado Springs Box Score

Six different Sky Sox drew a walk, that seems to be an organizational pattern in the early going -- didn't translate to runs here, though, 0-for-4 with RISP; Will Middlebrooks starting over Garin Cecchini again, sigh -- at least Michael Reed moved to RF for this one.

Colorado Springs Game Log

At the end of spring training, I had prepared a magnificent post on Minor League Rule 5 LHP Mitch Lambson, which the internet frustratingly ate before I could submit.

The man with a career 1.10 WHIP (wow!) was brought in to several tough situations in big league exhibition games, and he stranded all eight men he inherited, retiring every batter he faced. He definitely saved the spring ERA's of more than one established big league Brewer.

Here was his 2016 Sky Sox debut --

Memphis Bottom of the 5th

Pitching Change: Mitch Lambson replaces Brent Suter.

Matt Williams grounds out, third baseman Will Middlebrooks to first baseman Andy Wilkins.

Jacob Wilson grounds out, third baseman Will Middlebrooks to first baseman Andy Wilkins.

Anthony Garcia doubles (3) on a line drive to left fielder Alex Presley.

Jonathan Rodriguez strikes out swinging.

He definitely said it was 130 and I didn't buy it. It would have been a nice tidbit if true, but I would've loved to see the Trackman with my own eyes. I immediately thought, it would be great to put that in my article, if I could have confirmed it.

Thanks for the info. I figure he meant "103" or at most "113".

119 MPH is the hardest hit homer I have heard of.
