Via 'Tees PR: Phil Bickford and David Denson have been added to Brevard County. Gage Smith and Zach Hirsch have been released.

I know very little about Gage Smith except that he throws side armed but his results have always been good. The Tigers released him last year as well.

Via 'Tees PR: Phil Bickford and David Denson have been added to Brevard County. Gage Smith and Zach Hirsch have been released.

From May 19th:

Brewers wasted little time in picking up recently-released RH reliever Gage Smith, the 2014 25th round pick out of Florida State by the Tigers.

Smith has posted a 2.01 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 121 pro innings, topping out at High-A. The 25-year-old likely will head to Maryvale for a bit before being formally assigned to an affiliate.

Smith joins Biloxi RHP Stephen Kohlscheen and LHP Brett Lee (Lee since released) as other relievers scooped up shortly after their releases this spring.

The Brewers had converted Lee to a sidearm motion, as they had RHP Tyler Spurlin, now in Biloxi. Smith was yet another, so the Brewers were intent on adding that different look to the organization, and did so again yesterday with the waiver claim of Ben Rowen.

As for LHP Zach Hirsch, the 3rd year pro out of Nebraska (19th round, 2014) who had Lane Grindle call his college games, the just-turned 26-year-old likely didn't see this release coming. Despite an 0-6 record, Hirsch had posted a 1.07 WHIP in 58.2 innings this summer, and has a 1.15 WHIP as a pro. In his last three outings he had not allowed a run over ten innings. In small samples since his signing, Hirsch had not dominated LH batters, but did have relatively even splits.

Hopefully Zach's recent work nets him another affiliated contract.

Any word as to why Gatewood hasn't been playing the last few games?

What is the latest on Monte Harrison's injury? Is he done for the year? Will he start out in Appleton in 2017 for the 3rd straight season? He just never seems to get on track...

According to Todd Rosiak, back on July 23rd he said Harrison was 2 weeks out from playing in AZ, & 4 weeks out from returning to Appleton... So he should be getting on the field soon. But he could very well be done in Appleton for the year.

@friendpresto is Preston Gainey, who will be making his AA debut. He had been out most of the first half of the season with a back injury.

Wang to the Sky Sox means three LHPs in the rotation there. Notable because the last time the Brewers had a left handed pitcher start a game was August 28, 2013 (Tom Gorzelanny).

just some reflections on a few recent departures fwiw:

Sthervin Matos: surprised at this. Although he was in his 2nd full year at A ball he only recently turned 22. Especially at the timing since he was heating up, hitting .281 w/ a .844OPS in July including 3 HR in his last five games before being let go. with that great 2014 season and his positional flexibility, would have seemed he would have at least been given the rest of the year, if not one more in the system.

Hobbs Johnson: as so many have mentioned- great name- we need a "great name hall of fame," we've had some good ones come through this system. but more than his name, that 2013 rookie season, made him a favorite of so many here, which saw him promoted up to A ball w/ a 15.9 K/9 and a solid followup season in '14. but came off of the rail in the 2nd half of last year in AA- not sure what happened- makes me think he could still figure it out- glad to see he's still trying to in indy ball.

Jaye Chapman/Ben Guez/Jim Miller: These are the type of guys I end up rooting for probably more than anyone. 26+ year olds who have put together good minor league numbers, especially in AAA, who just seemed to never get their shot for a variety of reasons. was hoping they'd get theirs in Milwaukee, but alas. at least Chapman is still going strong in AA with Tampa. they'll probably turn him into another Balfour.

Zach Jones/Colin Walsh: I know neither of them would be able to hold their own at the MLB level this year, but think they'll both make it back to the show at some point. Walsh I think can be a decent utility infielder/PH someday, but I think Jones is going to be a stud reliever and was really hoping we'd be able to stash him to keep him in the system. Glad to see they are both excelling albeit back with their original teams.

Ariel Pena: sad. had renewed hope after a successful campaign as a starter last year, but was never able to find control. I still think its with that delivery that has him throw off balance to the first base side. either way, as the last remnant of the Greinke trade- it makes one pause when already declaring the Fiers/Gomez trade a big win for Milwaukee. I similarly thought we fleeced Anaheim with three top prospects. And after Segura went on that big 2013, and Hellweg was regularly touching 98 (even though also couldn't find home plate), it looked like we had two long-term future pieces, and Pena was a bonus if he ever was able to figure it out.

Jed Bradley: always had steep LH/RH splits so felt he could be a successful MLB LOOGY even the past couple years while he was struggling. which is more confusing that he's having success in Atlanta's system back as a starter. potential's still there, but it was probably time to move on.

Even though I don't think any of these guys will come back to bite us (save Jones- but it would have been difficult to keep him as a rule 5), always hate to see our prospects go for whatever reason, especially the "homegrown" ones. Wish them all the best of luck going forward.

Maryvale OF Nic Pierre last saw action back on July 22nd...

Less than 24 hours after that mention, Pierre, the $800,000 three-year pro (but only turns 20 in November), has been transferred from Maryvale to the DSL Brewers. No word on the circumstances (this is Pierre's 2nd year stateside), but any purposeful bounceback would be welcome.

As mentioned in the Michael McKenry thread on the Major League Forum --

Andrew Susac was placed on the DL with the Sky Sox. Backup Parker Berberet was activated, but Josmil Pinto is more of a 1B/DH these days, prompting the need for the McKenry acquisition, and the Brewers indicated it was for cash only, and not related to the Jed Bradley deal.

We never learned what injury has sidelined Adam Weisenburger all season, but I miss that dude.
