2016 Random MLB News & Notes Thread

The D'Backs' home uniforms are strange, too. They might be a fit in the minors or as one of those "future" uniforms we'd see from time to time a decade ago. Or they might work as fan merchandise. But they don't look right on major league players.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

The writing on the gray road uniforms doesn't show up from any distance. It's even a problem when looking at the pitcher from the vantage point of second base. To see anything, you need a closeup and good lighting.

Vince Velasquez, who the Phillies picked up (along with a ton of other prospects) in the Ken Giles trade just threw a complete game 3 hitter against the Padres, walking 0 and striking out 16.

I couldn't believe Houston gave up as much as they did for a reliever and it's already paying dividends for the Phillies.

Interesting story about the new fastest throw on record (since MLB has been recording throw speeds): 105.5 mph by Aaron Hicks. The previous high was 103.1 mph by Carlos Gomez.

I have to admit, I had no idea position players could throw the ball faster than pitchers. Obviously a throw from centerfield is quite a bit different than a strike over home plate, but 105.5 mph! Does this mean Aroldis Chapman could throw the ball even faster if he was just lobbing it from the outfield?

The running start makes quite a difference, I'd imagine :)

A couple nights ago in the Padres/Pirates game there was a bases loaded balk called on the Padres. The umps got together and then changed the call. Hurdle came out to argue, the umps got together and the call stood. Hurdle went back to the dugout and then came back out to argue. The umps got together again and then changed the call again back to the original call. I don't know what the correct call was but I'm pretty sure the umps blew that situation.

I read an article about Trever Bauer that mentioned most of those pitchers throw harder if they want. Of course it's using a crow hop.

So Arrieta is about to throw a no hitter and we are all supposed to be impressed. Truth is out of his last 10 starts this was not in the top 4. Lot of hard hit balls right at guys and 4 walks. He has been insanely good for half a year now but this game will get way too much praise over the rest of them.

Ho hum, another no no. Has a Brewers pitcher even taken one past the 6th inning since Nieves got his? I'm about ready for one to happen.

Dave Bush did.

Sheeter.

Plus, CC Sabathia threw one in Pittsburgh. Somehow, a pitcher bare handing a slow roller in front of the mound and dropping it.... isn't an error.

And the correct ruling. I wouldn't have considered it a routine play.

Interesting little video on Arrieta. I'm wondering why he's allowed to put foreign substance on his forearm? Will Smith got caught for doing this. The umps need to enforce this a bit more. Rosin is one thing...mixing substances is another. This is creating an unfair advantage and I see it happening a lot throughout the league.

Pitchers have been using sunscreen + rosin for years. Hitters don't care as it simply helps the pitcher grip the ball better. They aren't juicing the ball with it.

Happens all the time. Only becomes an issue when some manager decides he wants to make it an issue. Most don't because their pitcher is doing it too.
