2016 Pre-Season Community Top 25 Prospect Poll is now open - come vote!

Brewer Fanatic Contributor

We would like to invite everyone to participate in our 2016 Pre-Season BF.net Fan Community Top 25 Prospects voting. Lots of exciting things going on (and more likely to come). Please take time and submit on this thread your top 25 Brewer prospects. Feel free to list any resources or news that you feel might help people with their voting.

Because there are so many new players - as well as players who may or may not end up in the system by the start of the season - we’re going to keep voting open until April 5 - a couple of days after the season begins. This way we’ll know about any last minute moves, especially regarding borderline prospects without options.

VERY IMPORTANT: You can change your votes through April 5 - so if you want to post your list early, you are free to edit it up to the April 5 deadline. This will be important if any major trades occur (such as Lucroy getting dealt).

RULES

1. Submit your Top 25 prospects, in order, by end of day on April 5. Put the player's full name to avoid any confusion (such as which Diaz you are selecting).

2. You MUST submit 25 prospects. If there are only 10 or 15 or whatever, your list will not be included.

3. You are encouraged to go beyond pick #25 - adding a few more is totally fine. That way if someone in your top 25 is traded or released, I can just bump up your next player(s) into the Top 25.

4. Rankings are determined by total points. The top prospect gets 25 points, second prospect gets 24 points, etc.

4. As noted above, if you submit your list and want to change something, just add the change to the thread. I'll accept changes up to the deadline.

5. Within a few days after the deadline, we'll publish the new BF.net Community Top 25.

Eligibility questions:

Rookie eligibility is determined by 50 IP or 130+ ABs at the major league level.

- Ineligible players: Hernan Perez, Shane Peterson, Domingo Santana, Taylor Jungmann, Corey Knebel, Will Middlebrooks, Josmil Pinto, Jonathan Villar

- Eligible players with ML experience: Tyler Cravy, Zach Davies, Ariel Pena, Wei-Chung Wang, David Goforth, Keon Broxton, Rymer Liriano, Garin Cecchini, Ramon Flores, Jorge Lopez, Michael Reed, Yadiel Rivera, Yhonathan Barrios, Adrian Houser

I would encourage everyone to vote based upon the above criteria.

Player Notes:

- Pitchers Taylor Williams and Nathan Kirby will likely miss all of 2016 with Tommy John surgery.

There are so many dang outfielders I didn't know what to do with them all. I don't have much time these days so I threw this together a little quicker than I typically would. I may come back to alter it though.

UPDATE: Just realized I forgot Cody Ponce. Please stick him in at #12 and knock everyone else down a peg.

Yes the number of OFs is insane when putting this together. I'll definitely be tinkering with mine - I also based it off of what I saw when watching these guys practice last week. I happened to see 15+ of the guys in the Top 30 on most scouting sites

Thanks everyone for getting so many submissions in already. I appreciate everyone including first names or initials. It will make things easier for me in the long run.

One suggestion: could a mod put a link on the major league forum and sticky it to the top? I want to make sure everyone realizes the poll is active, and doing this has helped in the past.

Thanks.

Decided not to go beyond 25, or I could never stop! Could have very easily had any of 20-25 other guys in the last few spots. Looking at other lists, I guess I have Taylor Williams and Yadiel Rivera rated much higher than most. Michael Reed much lower.

1. LHP Brent Suter - Still impressed by his 2015 season, particularly in Colorado Springs.

2. SS Orlando Arcia - Opening Day 2017 shortstop. Will he develop power?

3. RHP Jorge Ortega - Just produced. Rating increased after an offseason of reflection.

4. OF Michael Reed - OBP skills, doubles power, and speed look great, but will new acquisitions crowd him out?

5. OF Keon Broxton - A poor man's Carlos Gomez, but flashing superior OBP skills in spring training.

6. OF Trent Clark - OBP skills, speed, and a pure hitter.

7. OF Brett Phillips - hits doubles, triples, and OBP, but lack of power worries me.

8. 1B/3B Garrett Cooper - A right-handed Lyle Overbay

9. SS/2B Isan Diaz - Dynamic offensive prospect could make the Aaron Hill deal a big steal for the Brewers

10. OF Troy Stokes - OBP skills, speed, and doubles power

11. C Jason Nottingham - Becomes the top catching prospect for the system.

12. OF Demi Orimoloye - Power bat, but can he learn to draw walks?

13. LHP Josh Hader - Could be in the 2017 Brewers' rotation.

14. RHP Jorge Lopez - Power pitcher developed into potential ace.

15. RHP Zach Davies - Superb performance in Milwaukee in 2015

16. 2B Colin Walsh - Versatile and a good bat. Mark Loretta with more power?

17. 3B Garin Cecchini - Change of scenery could do former Red Sox prospect good

18. LHP Wei-Chung Wang - Pitched his way into a top 25 spot and back to prospect status.

19. RHP Cody Ponce - Did well in small sample last year.

20. OF Victor Roache - Flashed power and some OBP skills in AA.

21. OF Clint Coulter - What caused OPS to drop 200+ points, Brevard County or something else?

22. SS Gilbert Lara - Were struggles in AZ fatigue or attitude?

23. RHP Adrian Houser - Could find a spot in the Brewers bullpen for 2016

24. UT Nate Orf - Versatile infielder with beaucoup OBP skills

25. UT George Iskenderian - shows the ability to hit for average and some OBP skills

26. RHP Tyler Crvay - Solid at AAA, rough go in the majors

27. SS Jake Gatewood - Helena numbers offer hope, but past struggles leave me skeptical

28. LHP Hobbs Johnson - Avoids the gopher ball.

29. OF Monte Harrison - First overmatched, then injured.

30. OF Tyrone Taylor - Overshadowed as CF prospect by Reed and Phillips

31. C Adam Weisenburger - OBP skills and a good arm.

32. RHP Damien Magnifico - Actually closing at Biloxi and doing well

33. UT Malik Collymore - Versatile, OBP skills, some speed, a little pop.

34. LHP Sean Nolin - Got hammered in cup of coffee with Oakland, didn't go far in 2015 AAA starts. Swingman out of the pen?

35. OF Joangtel Segovia - Hits for average.

36. 1B Tyrone Perry - Could he emerge as 1B of the future?

37. LHP Brad Kuntz - Could he be dominant arm in bullpen?

38. RHP Gentry Fortuno - Just dominated in rookie ball.

39. SS/2B Blake Allemand - switch-hitting SS/2B who hits for average

40. OF Rymer Liriano - If Jeff Cirillo were a RF, he'd be Liriano.

Notes: I'm keeping Suter high, upped Jorge Ortega to third based on his production, and made other adjustments based on an offseason of reflection. The addition of Walsh and Diaz resulted in me dropping Lara significantly. I am wondering if the Brewers shouldn't package guys like Tyrone Taylor or Monte Harrison for help elsewhere, given that there may be better prospects in the system.

1) O. Arcia- Its entirely within the realm of possibilities that he hits a bunch and Villar does not to start the season. I doubt the Brewers budge before July, but….

2) B. Phillips- Probably not worthy of the oft-injured moniker yet, but after ending last season's thumb and spring's oblique, a few months of playing every day would make me feel better.

3) J. Lopez- His loose, athletic delivery is fun to watch. Something worth following and showing up a Miller Park to watch this summer when he arrives.

4) T. Clark- Since I don't have anything new to say about Clark, and he is the first low-minors player I've ranked; I am pondering if the Brewers will be more aggressive in mideseason promotions with Stearns at the helm. A lot of the acquired Astro farm hands seemed to play at multiple levels in a given season.

5) K. Medeiros- I probably still like Medeiros more than most because he was on when I saw him. Would like to see less platoon splits this year.

6) J. Hader- The typical scouting report has gone from concerns about quality of breaking pitches to concerns about max effort delivery and build. At least he seemingly took one concern off his list.

7) M. Reed- Reed's path to MLB playing time got more clouded this offseason, but its nice to hear the Brewers coming out and saying that he is very much in the future plans without really being prompted.

8) C. Ponce- Disappointed I missed the opportunity to watch Ponce pitch in the Midwest League.

9) J. Nottingham- Widely varying opinions on the guy from top 100 prospect to not top 10 catching prospect. The Brewers though seem commited to keeping him behind the plate and have no reason not to be patient.

10) G. Lara- Good to hear he put on 10-15 lbs of "good weight" after he seemingly wore down last season.

11) I. Diaz- While the pioneer league is as hitter friendly as they come, the fact that he had the highest OPS as a teenager since Billy Butler is what sells me that he could be special

12) C. Coulter- Defensive rawness aside, I still love Coulter's combination of raw power and plate discipline and think he could be an impact bat at the big league level. Actually if I had to pick one player in the system, who could be a future #3 hitter in a big league lineup, it'd probably be him. But he needs to be quicker to make adjustments and mantain his walk rate as he progresses up the latter.

13) D. Williams- Really nothing new to add here after the offseason, but I havent heard any indications that he's not past whatever kept him in extended spring training to start the year last season. So that may be a good thing.

14) Z. Davies- Davies mlb eta may have been delayed this offseason, but I still see 20 starts here.

15) M. Harrison- Hearing that he isn't 100% to start spring isn't good news, but hopefully he is ready to go by T-Rat opening day

16) M. Diplan- I guess ultamately the Gallardo trade jury is still out, but Knebel liekly moving into a more high leverage role, and Diplan moving into full season ball, it could be a big hit by the end of the year.

17) J. Gatewood- Despite only being in his 2nd full season and impressive raw power, this seems like a big year for Gatewood. His development track is seemingly either is going to take off or fade into the background.

18) T. Taylor- Doug Melvin seemed to hold tight to the conviction that speed guys develop late. Unfortunately for Tyrone, Doug doesn’t run the show anymore. His best bet is to start producing alittle more.

19) N. Kirby- The waiting game sucks

20) D. Orimoloye- A crowded Wisconsin outfield probably seels his fate to be ticketed to Helena, but its probably for the best for a patient development path.

21) A. Houser- I wonder what the development plan is for Houser. He doesn’t have the history of success that warrents clearing a rotation spot for, nor is he likely to have tremendous success in Colorado Springs. I assume at some point in time he will transition to the bullpen but maybe that happen in Milwaukee

22) B. Woodruff- I manipulated my list from last fall so he still made the cutoff. So what? Frankly, I still do not understand why people are not more excited about this guy.

23) R. Flores- Already projects a 100 wRC bat. He may not have any exception tools, but he seems like a young, Venezuelan Brady Clark.

24) C. Walsh- Ok, I understand there is a reason why the As, who arent dumb, left this guy unprotected, and the Cardinals, who arent dumb, released this guy… But Baseball prospectus 90th percentile projection is .284/.398/.438. Unless Im completely misunderstanding math, there is a 10% chance he does that... this year... as a rule 5 pick. as a second basement... That is insane to me.

25) M. Diaz- Sounds like the Brewers are ticketing him for Wisconsin which is just another funbox score to follow during long night watch our local 9.

26) T. Perry- Might be an overslot until he actually does something in fullseason ball as a 14th round pick, but I have such fond memories of a former Brewers well-built first basemen mashing dingers.

27) G. Cecchini- I realize he was acquired for straight cash, but its hard for me to believe that his K:BB ratio doubled without some ill-advised adjustment. He's still young enough that it isnt out of the realm of possibilities he can get back to the player he was.

28) T. Williams- As a fan its nice that the system depth still gives plenty of players to follow with Williams missing 2 full seasons. Unfortunately, probably no solace for Taylor

29) B. Derby- Fair or not, Tyler Thornberg's inability to translate to sustained MLB success will likely limit my enthusiasm for Derby, but still should be a fun player to follow.

30) R. Liriano- The plus of rebuilding is there is no downside to take a flier here and Stearns seems to fully understand that. Now hopefully we get to experience plenty of upside.

31) C. Herrera- Admittedly, I was underwhelmed on the return for Lind who will be the best hitter in Seattle's lineup most nights, but I've been wrong before. I'll have no issues with Herrera and company making me look foolish for my skepticism.

32) K. Broxton- I just don't see enough power to make a 30% strikeout rate work at the majors. Hopefully skills growth in contact is forthcoming.

33) J. Barnes- It seems like the Brewers strategy of development of relievers hasn’t produced much for MLB success. Here is to hoping Barnes can change that

34) N. Orf- Keeps exceeding expectations. Wouldn’t be surprised if he got some MLB time somehow this year.

35) T. Supak- A wide array of possible outcomes is a good way to describe Supak

36) J. Bethancourt- Admittedly, hard to get excited about an OBP hovering around .300. But context is important I suppose

37) T. Stokes- Hope he is placed in Wisconsin and the Brewers can find a way to get him regular at-bats.

38) C. Leal- Leal is about the only person I've really dropped since fall. I guess with him no longer holding the debatable status as top catching prospect in the organization has caused me to sour. That and I need to see that he can sustain a above average BABIP as he advances up the ladder

39) A. Ventura- I was admittedly (maybe unnecessarily) worried that the Brewers might lose him in the rule 5 draft. Yeah, it'd be a jump, but his year in Appleton was quietly quite impressive.

40) D. Denson- Denson once hit a 515 foot home run as an amateur…. Hopefully that isnt a career highlight. Be nice to see the power tool and discipline translate this season.

41) D. Magnifico- Will need to see more him miss more bats before I think he has a high leverage future

42) B. Diaz- I'm guessing he is the best 3rd rated Diaz in a system in baseball.

43) Z. Jones- Wouldn’t be surprised if he started on the DL so the Brewers could get alittle longer to evaluate if there is any control at all.

44) J. Ortega- Just such a statistical anomaly. I got a feeling more of those balls in play land over the fence outside of Brevard

45) N. Walters- Could jump up the list quickly this year if he shows good progression in year 2.

46) M. Collymore- If he can maintain a high BABIP in Wisconsin I will believe more

47) S. Nolin- A strong spring training and he certainly offers more upside than (open) on the 40 man.

48) Y. Rivera- Hitting in small sample sizes is better than not hitting in small samples sizes, but I still don't see him hitting much

49) F. Peralta- See C. Herrera

50) Y. Barrios- I was skeptical of his ability to succeed in the pen without more Ks. For someone who is new to pitching a shoulder injury is not helping anything.

Not sure if this is correct but I thought I had Tyrone Taylor in my top 5-7 at one point in the past. Crazy...

1. Orlando Arcia: Whip-quick bat and "flawless" defense at the most important defensive position

2. Josh Hader: Best stuff in the system and I think he begins his career as a starting pitcher

3. Trent Clark: Really hoping he continues to develop into a Mookie Betts type

4. Jacob Nottingham: Brewers see him behind the plate and the bat is advanced and potent

5. Brett Phillips: Multi-plus tool player at a premium defensive position

6. Kodi Medeiros: A very good candidate to see his stuff tick up as he gets older. Hader-esque stuff if it does

7. Cody Ponce: Stuff instantly translated and the arsenal is fully stocked

8. Jorge Lopez: Gallardo-like ceiling with just as much success as failure on his resume

9. Devin Williams: Another likely candidate to see his stuff tick up as he matures. Big velocity can be expected if that happens

10. Monte Harrison: Probably would have challenged Isan Diaz for Pioneer League MVP if not injured and he profiles at a more important position

11. Isan Diaz: Elite ceiling bat up the middle of the diamond will likely be a top-10 mainstay

12. Demi Orimoloye: How this guy fell to the 4th round is almost as big a mystery as how Giancarlo Stanton fell to the 2nd round

13. Marcos Diplan: 3 pitch guy with good heat and plenty of success in short season

14. Gilbert Lara: Physically impressive and a scouting darling. Would be sweet to see him have a second season like Isan Diaz did

15. Clint Coulter: The bat is clearly impact for me but he is a man without a position and a likely trade candidate

16. Zach Davies: Major league caliber starter who will have a sneaky good peak

17. Adrian Houser: Kind of bullpen guy at the time of the trade but he started pumping 95+ into the late innings with Biloxi. Now he looks like an average starter or impact reliever

18. Nathan Kirby: Future top-10 guy if his rehab goes well. Dominated the College World Series with plus stuff

19. Tyrone Taylor: I'm really not that down on Taylor. He has had some incredible statistical seasons while always being young. I expect a nice 2016 for him

20. Keon Broxton: Broxton, Reed, Liriano and Flores all look like average-ish major league outfielders with a few above average peak seasons if things go well

21. Michael Reed

22. Rymer Liriano

23. Ramon Flores

24. Javier Betancourt: I think his numbers at Biloxi will surprise some folks. Similar offensive profile to Arcia for some

25. Taylor Williams: What a bonus it will be to see Williams and Kirby ready to go next Spring

26. Bubba Derby: Gets a boatload of K's with below average nastiness. Similar profile to Mike Fiers or Zach Davies in that sense

27. Angel Ventura: The FSL is tough on hitters but the environment should propel a guy like Ventura

28. Joantgel Segovia: Clearly has a plus plus tool but the rest of the profile underwhelms. The bat makes line drive contact everywhere he goes

29. Carlos Herrera: Perfect example of a pre-hype pick-up as Herrera is a good bet to improve his stuff naturally through body maturation and coaching

30. Victor Roache: Dreamers see Nelson Cruz with the bat while realists see a backup power bat off the bench

31. Jacob Gatewood: The needed adjustments are obvious but I think he has a shot. The best thing for him is seeing the boatloads of quality talent around him

32. Junior Guerra: Very old but very nasty

33. Jacob Barnes: Very nasty in short stints after conversion to relief

34. Colin Walsh: Walsh, Orf, Cecchini all seem like average-ish bench options with a decent year or two as a starter

35. Nate Orf

36. Garin Cecchini

37. Garret Cooper: Will have to force his way to the majors like Jason Rogers did and he might

38. Yadiel Rivera: Great defender probably cannot hit enough. Nice bench option

39. Freddy Peralta: Lot's of K's as a young guy

40. Miguel Diaz: Good results matched with good reports make Diaz a good bet to rise this list

41. Trey Supak: Big arm who needs to tighten up his game or move to the bullpen

42. Brandon Diaz: Diaz, Collymore and Stokes all have nice patience with perhaps surprising punch. Its easy to imagine one of them rising up this list quick

43. Malik Collymore:

44. Troy Stokes

45. Dustin Houle: Very similar profile to Nottingham although it has yet to manifest itself on the field for long stretches

46. Franley Mallen: Good sting in his stick from an athletic big body

47. Tyrone Perry: Either Perry or Iskenderian are probably the low-round offensive gem from the last draft. Could be fast risers

48. George Iskenderian

49. Ignacio Otano: Very young and dominated the DSL

50. David Denson: 2016 is probably his best/last shot to assert himself

51. Carlos Luna: Very young and dominated the DSL
