Draft Pick Discussion Thread, Rounds 31-40

Recommended Posts

I was talkin to Wes today the Brewers called im last night and asked him if he would be interested in being a draft and follow canidate. Hes is kind of thinkin about it but dont think he will because he right now has a great shot at startin for Mizzou next year. I could tell he was a little disappointed he thought the Phillies wee goin to take him 10-18 because they told him thats where they projected him and would take him. So maybe in 3 more years Wes will be in the higher rounds like Tony Butler. Chad still not gone?? I know his signabiltiy was very low but i thought someone would have snagged him by now. Chad catchin for Seidel next year at Arkansas is goin to look good I have to say.

Just emailed my buddy to ask about Eric Newton, our 33rd rounder. For those who don't know, I went to Santa Clara, and my buddy still works in the athletic dept and works at every game. His words:

"Lead WCC in homers, but those are inflated because he hit most of them off far inferior teams or D2 schools. hits for power if he actually hits it. Strikes out a lot. Can't hit a curve, rarely catches up to high fastball. average fielder. Based off of other SCU guys taken...i would wager he does not get past A ball."

D - I would have a similar report (only much much worse) on some of the NMSU players that were drafted. The one guy isn't even good enough to start on his college team and makes the worst decisions an outfielder can make. Did I mention he's not a very good hitter either?

I wonder what some of these clubs are seeing? Must have seen one of his good games; there were only a couple.

After round 20 do they just look for athletes and hope they can turn them into players?

Yes and no. Sometimes they'll go for raw athletes and try to mold them. Quite often they'll take guys who will go to Junior Colleges and let them show themselves at a higher level of competition and for an extra season, and then sign them before next year's draft.

The Brewers did that with Manny Parra in 2001. He was a 26th round pick that dominated JuCo so much that he would have been a 1st rounder had the Brewers not signed him the week before the 2002 draft.

An article on the biggest steal in the draft Wes Munson!

Now for the insider info the Brewers want him to put on about 20 lbs and move him over to 3rd base right now. The Brewers also said they will take care of his financial needs if he signs and that it doesnt matter were he was picked. So I think Junior College is going to be his route but who knows!

Munson turns down Brewers to attend Mizzou

By Doug Whiteley

The Reporter dwhitele@fdlreporter.com

After being offered a scholarship from the University of Missouri, getting drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers and then toying with the idea of attending junior college, Fond du Lac baseball player Wes Munson has decided he will attend Missouri this fall.

"I was going to go to junior college and I told (the Missouri coaches) that and they upped my scholarship to 90 percent, so I'm not paying much to go there, so that was a deciding factor, too," Munson said. "And I've got a good shot to play right away."

The Brewers, who selected Munson in the 37th round with the 1,112th pick in the June first-year player draft, wanted him to get more playing time and suggested he go to junior college, according to Munson.

"I just figure, I've been drafted already out of high school. (The Brewers) wanted me to get more at-bats. Being from Wisconsin where we don't get a lot, they wanted me to get a year of at-bats in. I figure, go to a Big 12 school, and face the best pitchers in country and hopefully hit pretty well."

Munson's shot to play professionally isn't done; he said it's only on hold for at least two seasons.

"If I go there for two years and play in the Big 12, I should climb the draft ranks pretty well," Munson said.

Munson hit .345 with a home run and 12 RBIs for Fondy, slugging .534 with an on base average of .435. He was named as a first-team shortstop on the all-Fox Valley Association team and was a third-team all-state infielder as selected by the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association.

The right-hander has played for the Sheboygan A's this summer in the Wisconsin State League where he's hit .315 with 12 RBIs.

Munson said the Missouri coaching staff has kept an eye on his play and is encouraged.

"They said I could start right now," Munson said. "They came and watched me this summer and the infield coach said I could start at third for them."

Before Munson starts his collegiate career, he caps his high school career with one more honor. He was selected by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association for its all-District 4 team.

The Association selected more than 100 players in eight districts representing 48 states for its all-district teams. District 4 covered Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. From those states, 16 players made the District 4 team and four of them were infielders, including Munson.

"I was pretty excited about that," he said.
