2016 Brewers Uniform Numbers

Brewers.com has numbers for the new players. As I'm weird, that's one of the moments I look forward to every year to see what numbers guys are getting and if anyone changed numbers. I didn't see anyone changed numbers but it looks like the new veterans go a choice and the new youngsters were pretty much just assigned numbers starting with Broxton at #60.

Jungmann grabbed Lohse's 26 to match his college number.

Right there with you, jerichoholicninja. I thought it was weird yesterday not to find the NRI link on the right or just above the roster, but it's there in the drop-down "Roster" banner tab. I also noticed they're all listed as NRI guys (signified by an asterisk) when you click on the 40-man roster link.

... And of course I went back looking for Jungmann to be listed as #26, too. Mass Haas, where did you find that?

Of course, that could change if or when they make the team.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

brewers going retro for spring training, i wonder if this means they will be wearing these for BP too

I loved the jerseys they've worn the last few years in Spring Training and wish those would have made it the regular season.

I am not going to rush out and by an Arcia #72 or Phillips #77 jersey that is for sure. Think I will hold off until they get a real number.

Those ARE real numbers, now if they had 72i or 77i, that would be incredible!!! #MathTeacher

I meant they are not the real numbers they will have in their career. When they come up for good they will get lower numbers.

I'd guess that on Sunday a lot of these guys will have new numbers assigned as they wear their jerseys during On Deck

The numbers currently assigned are what you should expect they'd be wearing this Sunday. The list I keep shows there are...

40 guys on the 40-man

10 guys who comprise the coaching staff (including Marcus Hanel & Joe Crawford)

17 NRI guys (I counted Shane Peterson for the time being since he's still in the organization)

5 retired numbers (4, 19, 34, 42, 44)

1 Brewer alum who's a part-time ST instructor (#17 Gantner) whose # never gets assigned to anyone else

... all of which leaves only 1, 3, 23, 40, 53, & 69 unassigned below #80. So it's not like there's a bevy of available numbers that some of these uber-prospects could shift to.

That said, not all NRI guys will stick in the organization, and ditto for perhaps a few 40-man guys (no options left, potential DFA moves, and possible trades), so other numbers will likely become available by the end of ST.

If you're like me, you were also interested to learn that....

Chase Anderson will wear the same #57 he had in AZ,

Bobby Hill inherited Segura's #9, and

Jason Lane switched from #57 to #40 to accommodate Anderson.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Count me among those who are also fascinated by baseball uniform numerology.

What intrigues me the most is actually the lack of uniformity. For example, it seemed to me that for a while, the Brewers were issuing new starting pitchers numbers in the 40's and new relief pitchers numbers in the 50's. Occasionally, they'd dip into the 30's and 60's. However, free agent pitchers (or newly-acquired ones like Greinke) have been able to select any number they wished (provided it was available). Recently, this "pitcher range" seems to have been relaxed, as there are now a number of pitchers with uniform numbers in the 20's. Still, you rarely see pitchers with single-digit uniform numbers or even uniform numbers in the teens. Am I imagining this?

For some reason pitchers just don't wear single digit numbers. I'm sure there might be one or two out there now but the last one I remember was Kyle Drabek wore #4 for Toronto. The reason I wore #6 every chance I got was because I saw Rob Bell pitching for the Rangers with #6 and I thought it looked good on a pitcher.

There seem to be traditions that are loosely followed. And there are also significant exceptions, like a guy wanting 0, or 00, or 99.

Veteran players generally get to pick their numbers. And young players do too, provided that the number is available. When a veteran acquisition wants a number that's already in use by a young guy, he generally "buys" it with a gift like a watch.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I think that in the olden days, guys often wore a number that corresponded with the spot they batted in the order. Thus, pitchers did not get single digits.
