Star Wars (SPOILERS LIVE HERE)

If that girl is Lando's daughter, it should be mentioned in the movie. Having the director tell us in an interview after the fact is poor writing. Having it be part of a story line of a comic or tie-in novel is just merchandising that I don't want to be part of. And poor writing.

I agree that the directory shouldn't have said it in an interview. Leaving it out of the movie was the right call IMHO. While there were a lot of new characters introduced, I would have been very upset if they showed a flow chart during the movie saying, "Lando begat Janna, and Poe wanted to begat with Zorri..."

I want new story lines. I want to have items in this movie that can be built upon. If Disney makes money off of it, then great... as long as they tell good stories.

This is the way.

Lando's daughter is in fact one of the cut components of JJ's version, allegedly. As is Finn point blank saying he has force sensory, Ben actually speaks at the end, and some of other stuff I don't remember regarding the Knights of Ren. Basically, a lot of the stupid holes are supposedly filled in during the extended cut.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Disney plans to release this “Directors cut” of EP 9 on their streaming service later this year. Probably another hype marketing ploy. Disney is gonna continue to milk this Star Wars cow for every drop from here until eternity.

I can't see that happening because it would just make them look that much worse if it's true and a clearly better movie. It seems more likely they just plop out another set of films (they are, 2022) and learn from how badly they mangled this one. They did mess this up, but for the most part, the content is usually pretty good. They didn't get where they are by sucking.

It was certainly a mistake not to have a general plan from the start. Would have liked Johnson to finish things up or JJ do all three. It just didn't work going from JJ to Johnson and back to JJ. They both kind of just dismissed or threw out what they didn't like about the other's creation. Having the Emperor come back didn't work at all and made no sense but when Snoke was killed JJ probably felt he needed that big bad guy. Do think the chemistry between Rey/ Finn/Poe was always there and much better than Anakin/Padme/Kenobi from the prequels. Also was nice to see Chewbacca and C-3PO play a decent role in ROS.

I think your first statement hits the nail on the head. For all the flak Lucas gets (and rightfully so, IMO) he at least had a relatively clear plan after New Hope. I thought EP 9 was the best of the sequel trilogy but I think the biggest mistake was splitting up the directorship.

The Finn thing was just strange since it's set up well in the movie, the conclusion of the trilogy, and then...not concluded. If the leaks are true (accidentally moving something, then actually telling Rey), it would at least complete the storyline. Also another on/off/on arc for the trilogy since it was speculated after the first film, completely off the radar in the second, then back on in the third.

I'm going to go all Rian Johnson on you guys and ignore everything that has been said prior...

Having just watched the movie, I agree that this was the best of the three. But I still don't get why they can't keep from repeating parts of episodes 4-6. Here we are again with the Emporer asking someone to strike him down to take his place; goading them by showing the space battle and that "no one is coming to help". Episodes 7&8 were worse at plagiarism, and Episode 9 almost made it out ...but then had to fail at the end again and copy an old story.

And why hasn't the Emporer learned not to zap himself with lightning??? Third time in three trilogies...

It’s a pity that The Mandalorian wasn’t made before the sequels. It’s only been 2 seasons and already the story line is 100x better than the sequels. Unfortunately in order to stay in canon the Mandalorian is seriously limited in their storyline but the season 2 finale provides a nice glimpse of what the sequel storyline could have (should have) been. Watching the Mandalorian just gets me angry about how crappy the sequel trilogy was.

That last episode was awesome and basically the Mandalorian is what the last three movies should have been. I hope they completely delete the last three movies and remove them from canon because the Mandalorian has a much more interesting story line and with the Ahsoka and Kenobi show coming soon those will also probably bypass the story telling that the last three movies have done. It shows what can be done with Star Wars when there are competent writers and directors and their is also a single vision on how the story is going to unfold.

The Book of Boba Fett so excited for that next year!

I'm going to say something possibly sacrilegious here. But as a lifelong Star wars fan someone who grew up in the eighties and lived, ate and breathed Star wars as a child, I might, and I stress might say that season two of the mandalorian will rank right up there with empire when the dust clears.

Season 1 had a few clunky missteps. The prison break episode just didn't hit in any way for me, the rest of it was pretty great. The pacing was really good, the story moved along briskly. I'm really honestly surprised that we are seeing storyline threads being not just picked up but resolved in a couple of seasons. Shows don't really do that anymore. And it's refreshing. Not that the show has come to a finale or conclusion, but major threads are being resolved, and it's nice to see a storyline not drag on and on and on. each episode has its own little story, while still being part of the overarching saga that's being told within the story of the mandalorian.

really excited to see where else Dave filoni and John favreau can take this, and Star wars as a storytelling medium overall.

Not sacrilegious at all, especially since I don't think Empire is the pinnacle. I definitely put Return or the Jedi above it. Season 2 of Mando was fantastic. You nailed it with your description, but I'll add how awesome it setup the spin offs into a greater universe. Filoni and Favreau have killed it and not just because it came after 7-9. I cant wait to see every piece of content pushed out.

We just got Disney+ over Christmas and finished season 2 last night. I agree with the Season 1 vs 2 thoughts. During Season 1, I kept thinking "Baby Yoda is cute, but the rest of it was 'meh'".

Season 2 was better - probably because they had better development of other characters; both friends and enemies. Though, I'm still disappointed that the took his helmet off. It kind of spoils the mystique of it.

The real question is if they can survive season 3 without Baby Yoda (sorry, his real name is irrelevant).

Personally, I don't compare the movies to the series -- they are different formats with different purposes. The movies had a shorter time to tell the story (compare Episodes 4-5-6 to just Season 1 of the Mandalorian). Mando is a bit slower paced and dives deeper into smaller details that you wouldn't bother with for a movie. The series is nice for backstories, but I doubt I'll ever rewatch the series. I do however occasionally rewatch the movies.

I also see they are coming out with Bobba Fett's own story... Personally, I would've gone with a non-Mandalorian-like character next. It will be cool if they plan to do a few seasons of multiple perimeter Star Wars characters and keep changing characters. Bobba Fett could be interesting...or could be a let down from The Mandalorian. Picking one of the secondary Jedi from Episodes 1-3 and getting a backstory (maybe their view of the Clone Wars) could be interesting. Or the story of how Lando Calrissian got the cloud city (i.e. basically the history of the city before Lando). Things like that would probably keep the series fresh and interesting. Most of these series die after a few seasons as the plots get stale.

It will be interesting to see what they do with Grogu down the line. If he survived what happened in Revenge of the Sith and after I don't see why he couldn't survive Ben Solo. Would have still been a kid during episodes 7-9 so would almost have to set a television show/movie a couple hundred years in to the future to show Gorgu in his prime.

I thought EP 9 was the best of the sequel trilogy but I think the biggest mistake was splitting up the directorship.

I thought Abrams hit a home run in Ep. 7 and again in Ep. 9. His movies took me back to being ages 8, 11, & 14. Had he directed all three, I think the story of Ep. 8 itself and Ep. 7-9 overall could've ended up a whole lot better told & delivered. I think Ep. 8 has some good moments and is a decent movie, but it just didn't feel quite right, sort of disrupting the 3-movie arc, and this, to me, is the difference:

- JJ told the story in both 7 & 9 the way the story needed to be told.

- Rian told the story in 8 more the way he wanted to tell it, not as much in the way it needed to be told. Too many holes, too many ways the characters behaved that weren't fully in keeping with how they did in 7 & 9, ways in which plot points unfolded that not only weren't consistent with 7 & 9 but also weren't consistent with 1-6.

There's a guy on YouTube called Mike Zeroh and he seems to post stuff constantly with some degree of insider knowledge (at least to a point). I have no idea this guy's credibility factor, and his bias is quite clear (he seems insanely anti-Kathleen Kennedy). A few of his recent posts talked about ways Favreau & Filoni will end up closing loopholes to refine recent movie storylines to be consistent with and fit into the canon. I like at least the last idea, because it doesn't create further divide by essentially invalidating all that happened in the last 3 movies (a recent rampant internet rumor was that Disney would do that), instead just deftly weaving all the existing parts together both credibly & cohesively.

On a different note, especially as I hear more folks speak positively of Solo in hindsight, I really wish they'd go back to Ron Howard and do more movies in that series like they originally planned. The end result of his effort was fantastic, and the big "bust" it was financially (even though it still finished over $75M worldwide in the black) would've been lessened considerably if not for the "wrong" director decision in the first place that required re-shooting (successfully, IMO) somewhere around half the movie -- an unfortunate initial director choice/decision they made that clearly wouldn't be repeated since they ended up with the right guy.

I'm a little concerned at all of the spinoffs they are having at the same time. I'm as much of a nerd as anybody else (knew what the Dark Troopers were before we were told because of playing Dark Forces, or identifying the type of weapon used by Boba Fett because I played X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter). Old I am... laugh you must.

I think Favreau and Filoni are treating the streaming media akin to graphic novels. I am happy that they are leading the franchise better than Kennedy and didn't see very good continuity in the sequel trilogy. One argument I heard over the last few years is that there weren't enough new ideas. Bringing in Grand Admiral Thrawn, venturing back to stories from the KOTOR timeline, and expanding on the Clone Wars / Rebels series (and keeping continuity) probably alleviates my fears about having so many spinoffs.

One of the messages in Season 2, I thought, was addressing Din's dogmatic view of the Death Watch faction. As the season wore on, his identity was being stripped whether it was from him taking off his helmet, his ship being destroyed, or even losing Grogu. Boba Fett adds to that story a bit because they both weren't "true Mandalorians" and are choosing different paths, in a manner of speaking. Perhaps I over analyze these things because of my Film and Media class at Madison (yikes!).

Mike Zeroh and Star Wars Theory are good channels and are sometimes too accurate ;) .

We would be honored if you would join us...

I have waht might be a stupid question. I haven't read this thread for fear of being let in on too much, so please excuse the ignorance that my question might display.

In the SW series, when does the Mandalorian take place?

Would it come after Return of the Jedi but before the Force Awakens?

I plan to start watching soon, but want/need to know where it fits in.

Thanks in advance.

You're correct ... but I would say pretty close after Return of the Jedi ... like within a few years, not later in the roughly 30-40-year time lag between Return of the Jedi and Force Awakens.
