Figured we could start a thread for anyone that's seen the movie. If you haven't seen the movie I recommend not reading this thread.

If you'd like, you can use spoiler tags. They can be added via the post editor, coded by hand, or pasted from the examples provided below.

To create a simple spoiler, there's a button available in the post editor. It's circled in this picture:

[margin]spoiler-post-editor4.png

Simply select the text you'd like to hide with the spoiler, and click the button.

The code will look like this before you post:
Some stuff to hide.
… and this will be the result:

Some stuff to hide.

[/margin]

You can optionally include a label on your spoiler by adding =Whatever label you'd like to the opening
tag. It'll look like this before you post…

[margin]
Some stuff to hide.
… and you'll get the this result:
Some stuff to hide.

[/margin]

[divid=handcodespoiler]If you prefer to hand-code or paste the spoiler code, use the examples below.

For a simple spoiler…

[margin]
Some stuff to hide.
will give you this result:

Some stuff to hide.

To include a custom label, this code…
Some stuff to hide.
…will give you this result:
Some stuff to hide.

[/margin][/divid]

I'll see it at some point in my life. Really don't care if anyone "spoils" it for me.

Han Solo dies

Saw it Friday in a mostly empty theater in Menomenee falls which was awesome - my movie experience wasn't ruined by people questioning the movie or loudly explaining 'homages' during scenes -- yes a friend had this happen.

I enjoyed it immensely, aside from one thing: There is no way a trained Sith loses a lightsaber battle to someone who's never used a lightsaber. Period.

Force or no force.

I truly thought when the Luke's lightsaber flew through the air (when Kylo Ren couldn't pick it up) that it should've been Luke catching the saber.

Except......

Kylo Ren isn't a Sith. He's a "Knight of Ren" (whatever that is). I thought it was displayed pretty clearly that he's a fairly green force user and not much more than someone who's strutting around but doesn't have a lot of power. He rages out to intimate people who aren't force users.

Also, keep in mind when Rey defeated him, he had just been shot in the stomach/chest by Chewbacca, and they had been making great effort to visibly display how powerful his bowcaster was. ("I like this gun!")... so he was already badly wounded.

Kylo Ren is young, has not completed his training, is struggling with the light/dark side aspect, and was badly wounded. It was the perfect confluence of events for him to get defeated by a noob.

Wasn't a huge surprise that Han Solo died since he wanted to die in ROTJ. With that said I thought Harrison Ford did a good job and his sidekick Chewbaca showed depth I had not seen before. There is certainly some similarities between A New Hope and this but it was executed well. Also really liked Rey, Finn and Poe as well as Kylo Ren so they should have a lot to work with in VIII plus Luke will likely play a large role. Didn't really like the First Orders leader so hope they improve on that. A great start but it will depend where the story goes from here. Is Rey Luke's son, maybe Leia and Han's or perhaps a relative of Kenobi. Fortunately only have to wait until May 2017 for the sequel.

How has TooLiveBrew not chimed in on this? Saw it last night. JJ did a phenomenal job. Answers the question, How good could these movies be without George Lucas' terrible dialogue?

When you say "these movies" I assume you're talking about the prequel trilogy?

Because removing Jar Jar, making them (the entire trilogy) about 2 hours shorter, and letting the actors actually act would have gone a long long way towards improving the final product.

And yes.....dialogue.

I liked the movie, particularly the new characters minus Domhall Gleeson and the two CGI rehashed, but am a little surprised at some of the hyperbolic praise considering how much of a rehash of the original movie it is. I'm kind of befuddled at the need for nostalgia in the age of home video.

Also there's not much to actually spoil.

Still it's a good movie. I'd put it somewhere in the neighborhood of Return of the Jedi.

I agree that there isn't really all that much to spoil. Considering it is the first movie it did a good job of establishing new characters that you actually care about though, something that was not done very well with the prequels. The success of the new movies will depend on what is done next, will they be able to go to the next level creatively without the crutch of nostalgia.

When they started the "battle plan meeting" around the hologram of the Death Star....I mean.....err........"Starkiller Base", what I was feeling was not a sense of nostalgia, but rather deja vu.

Up until that moment I was really enjoying myself, and was able to overlook all the nods back to ANH......despite them being very obvious. But at that point I was saying "This? Again?" It was borderline trite and contrived.

There were people in the theater whispering (or saying outloud) "Why did they leave ANOTHER obvious weakness in their super weapon!!!!!" or something similar.

It was a good movie. I had a lot of fun. I like the new characters. I think the trilogy is well set up moving forward....but the space battle/Starkiller base thing just kind of really pulled me out of the moment.

I hope there's more to Finn's background than what they've shown. I can't see how a guy that was basically raised to be a Stormtrooper just up and decides to quit. Seems like they would have weeded him out well before that battle. Plus, he had quite a sense of humor for what amounts to the sci fi equivalent of a Spartan warrior.

There is a new book that is aimed toward young adults that has three short stories covering Poe, Finn and Rey. It is somewhat surface level regarding Finn but there is some additional background. Pretty cheap too of you want a quick read regarding Finn.

In many ways, I think Guardians of the Galaxy did a better job of evoking similar feelings as Star Wars without feeling like a copy at times. The new Star Wars film is much, much better shot and designed though.

Agreed. I think Guardians was a much better script...and the soundtrack was incredible. TFA was much more "filmic" though.

I loved Guardians of the Galaxy. Guardians had one really big thing going for it that Star Wars didn't though in that it had no expectations, and it had the freedom to be whatever the creators wanted it to be.

After thinking on it some more, I realize what bothered me so much about Rey.

She's a bit of a Mary Sue. She is TOO GOOD and TOO PERFECT at everything she does through the movie.

Comparing her to Luke, if you look back, Luke F'd EVERYTHING up - from needing to be saved by the Sand People to needing Leia to save him from beneath Sky City.

Also, I'll admit, I laughed (internally) when Finn ran into Poe and was all lovey dovey with him -- I mean, they'd only known each other for about 20 minutes!

I hate the term Mary Sue and couldn't disagree more that she is one. Luke blew up the Death Star with less training or knowledge. She didn't use the force a whole lot but she probably had some training before Ben Solo turned on everyone. She of course has survived on her own for a long time so she has to be good at many things just for her to survive. She also appeared to learn or get information from Kylo Ren when he was trying to read her mind, she ended up getting information about the force from him. It was not like Kylo Ren was trying to kill her either, he was playing with her so that she would join him.

I agree Finn and Poe did not know each other long but it was a crucial time for both. I would be pretty happy to see someone that saved my life.

The term is fine, it means what it means. It may be overused, however, she didn't do a single thing wrong or fail at anything the entire movie.... and she miraculously gains the ability to use the force and pull a light saber to her better than someone who's had training. There is NO TRAINING what so ever given to her in the movie. Luke had at least trained with Obi-Won before he blew up the death star. I have no idea that she had any training before. All I know is she is an orphan who randomly can use the force. There's no context or even any hint that she'd had training before. I shouldn't have to assume something that major.

You don't need to use the spoiler thingy in a thread that is all spoilers.

Luke trained in a T-16 shooting womp rats. He also had some firce training with Obi-Wan. Rey had no training with the force. Her just being able to use the force without any training bugged me. Every single other person has had some training at some point.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.
