Cappy a head case now?

uwisfan
Cappy in his first game back from injury was pitching a soild game but got in a little trouble, so Yost decides its time to come out and give him a tongue lashing..which he loves to do from time to time (sometimes just randomly). This wasnt a rookie pitcher (Villanueva)..this was a veteran and recent all star pitcher. He implodes and Yost leaves him in to take his run total from 1 to 7 in that inning before yanking him. Now he gets into a little trouble tonight and starts aiming his pitches. Seems like a Turnbow style meltdown and its all in his head right now. Thoughts?

Extremely small strike zone tonight... After realizing he wasn't hitting/getting the corners, he had to come down main street and got rocked.

As far as being a head case goes..... maybe. He's a smart guy, which is good and bad. I guess I'll reserve judgement until the next outing to see if he's just really missing a lot or what.

Either way, control pitchers = not always reliable.

I agree the strike zone (and pressure from Yost) were really working against him mentally. He chose to paint the corners and got walks instead, while Villy chose to give the ump what he asked for and gave up the long balls.

Small strike zone + soft tossing control pitcher = lots of runs given up.

If ever there was a case to be made for hard throwers with nast stuff being better than control pitchers it was last night's game.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

I would actually add one more variable:

(Small strike zone + soft tossing control pitcher) * Colorado's Offense = lots of runs given up

It's easy as fans to look at only how the players we see everyday effect the game, but Colorado has the best offense in the league. I think we all can agree that Carlos V has been fairly effective this year, but I think we can also agree that he fell into that equation last night just as much as Cappy, if not more. Does that make him a head case?

Against any other team, Cappy or CV could have maybe gotten away with some of the walks last night, but not Colorado, not right now. Plus I don't think any other team is taking as many of those "close" pitches - Hawpe is a walking machine.

That being said, it's no excuse for as poorly as Cappy has been pitching lately, just another thing to keep in mind.

My point was neither of them are head cases. They both rely on control and hitting their spots to be successful. When the strike zone is small it effects them more than it does guys who can occasionally throw balls past hitters. You are right though colorado is a pretty good offensive club which only added to the problem.

There's an old baseball axiom. When a pitcher gets in trouble he needs to throw softer not harder. Capuano is a bulldog type. He gets mad and tries to throw harder. That takes away movement and control. Last night he was hitting 90 frequently. When Capuano is at his best, he tops out at 86-87.

As for Villanueva, well if a changeup pitcher can't get strikes called on knee high fastballs, it totally negates the effectiveness of his change. Hitters leave alone anything down in the zone. Also working against Villanueva is that he's on pace for 110 relief innings. That's an awful lot of bullpen innings in this age of baseball.

I actually thought Villy's stuff was pretty good last night. A lot of great changeups for strikes..a great mix and a lot of movement. It was like the ump saw that the pitch started around the head of the batter and decided then it would be a ball rather than watch the pitch fall to the knees. Obviously he adjusted and threw meatballs. And Colorado isnt exactly a homerun club, which is tough to accomplish with their stadium.

Could Cappy be our loogy until everything gets straightened out with him?

I think either of our young long relievers would be better suited for the rotation right now. Cappy is 0-6 in his last nine starts.

The Cardinals have already proven last year that you don't need a lefty starter to win in the playoffs.

People, get ahold of yourself. Cappy is struggling, but you just don't take veteran pitchers out of the rotation and make them loogys when they hit a rough patch. This is getting out of hand. Every brewers loss brings more ridiculous suggestions than the last. Every loss doesn't need to move the starter to the bullpen. Every 0-4 isn't the start of a slump. Every blown save is not a sign of the apocolypse. The manager doesnt need to be fired after every loss, and every loss doesn't start a 10 game skid.
