Venezuela Box Sunday 1/10

Moving on to the next phase of the postseason...

Hernan Perez' Aragua team won a 3-1 game to take deciding Game Seven. Perez, again batting third and playing shortstop, was 0-for-3 with a walk. He batted .323 in the series. Perez has played in 64 total winter ball games thus far.

DFA-limbo'd teammate Josmil Pinto (again as the DH) was 1-for-2 with a walk and run scored, and hit .381 in the series.

***

In other news out of Venezuela, folks are excited because 40-man roster RHP Junior Guerra has been given permission by Milwaukee to participate in the next playoff round; Guerra had been excellent during the regular winter season 2.86 ERA in 56.2 IP).

Got to love this "translated" tweet --

The opener of the Sharks managed to overcome the rigidity of the Brewers

Catcher Rene Garcia was 1-for-5 (run, K). One stolen base against, but he guided his Licey pitchers (mostly Wandy Rodriguez) to an 8-0 win. Licey is now 11-1 in the round-robin.

Have to wonder whether Perez' fine play over the winter has helped his chances at making opening day roster or not. I hope so. The knock on him was not enough power and low OBP, but he showed plenty of power in the winter and he's even been taking some walks. The competition at 3B isn't all that strong and I hope he gets a fair look in Arizona. It helps that not only can he play anywhere, he can play pretty well anywhere. It's not like he's old. He won't turn 25 for a couple months.

SS Yadiel Rivera was 0-for-3 in a 3-0 loss. Rivera hit .158 in 76 regular season winter AB;s, and he's hitting .176 in an even smaller winter postseason sample.

After a week off, RF Domingo Santana came back to join the fun his 12-1 Licey team is having, and he was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored in a 5-3 win. He did commit a fielding error - when he hasn't been the DH this winter, he's had a rough go of it.

Teammate RHP Ariel Pena allowed one run in two innings of work and netted a "hold" --

Toros Bottom of the 6th

Pitching Change: Ariel Pena replaces Mitch Atkins.

Teoscar Hernandez strikes out swinging.

Venezuelan Box Tuesday 1/12

In an 8-1 loss, Hernan Perez, playing a rare left field, was 1-for-4 (double, RBI, K).

Teammate Josmil Pinto, again only seeing action at designated hitter, was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Pinto's DFA status needs to be resolved by Friday the 15th, as per MLBTradeRumors. If he clears waivers and is outrighted by Milwaukee, he has enough pro service time to decline the assignment and pursue minor league free agency.

Puerto Rico Box Tuesday 1/12

In a 3-0 loss, shortstop Yadiel Rivera continued to limp down his year-round (since last February) playing season, 0-for-2 with two K's before being lifted for a pinch-hitter. At this point, the Brewers' stance on Rivera's winter ball status is at minimum puzzling, especially since others have been told to sit down.

That's Yadiel Rivera, who was 1-for-3, scoring the game's only run as his Santurce club moves on the League Championship Series Best-of-Seven starting Friday night.

And thus, we are one step closer to this, first posted January 3rd --

Consider this -- if Rivera's Santurce team takes the Puerto Rico League championship and advances to the Caribbean World Series to be played in the Dominican Republic this February, Rivera could do the nearly unthinkable. He could report to big league camp with the Brewers having effectively gone a full year without any significantly measurable time off.

Huge 4-3 13-inning win for SS Yadiel Rivera's Santurce club (Rivera was 1-for-5 with a walk). The best-of-seven is now tied at two games apiece.

Hernan Perez and Josmil Pinto hit the road for Game Five of their Best-of-Seven Venezuela Championship Series Wednesday night.

Actually, their Aragua team was home again in the 2-3-2 format, and yes, the home team won again, as after a 6-1 victory, Perez and Pinto are just one win away from reaching the Caribbean Series, leading the series, three games to two.

It was a good news / bad news night for SS Yadiel Rivera.

The good news was his Santurce team won 3-2, and now leads its Best-of-Seven Championship Series three games to two.

The bad news? Not only was Rivera 0-for-4 at the plate with two K's (one run scored when he reached on a wild pitch after a K), but this also:

FIELDING

E: Rivera, Y 3 (3, fielding, throw, fielding).

Mayaguez Bottom of the 4th

T. J. Rivera flies out to left fielder Ruben Sosa.

Dylan Cozens reaches on a fielding error by shortstop Yadiel Rivera. Dylan Cozens advances to 2nd, on a throwing error by shortstop Yadiel Rivera.

Those two errors on one play led to both opponent runs (unearned). A later error was not as painful.

Congrats, Hernan Perez!

Perez doubled and walked in five plate appearances (one run, one RBI) in an 8-2 win, as his Aragua team won the Venezuelan Chmpionship Series, 4-2.

Brewers 40-man roster OF Ramon Flores (Luis Sardinas trade) is still rehabbing an ankle fracture, but he's been tweeting up a celebration storm for his club, including this celebration video after the road victory.

Perez played wire-to-wire this winter (since October), so a trip to the Caribbean Series is a real reward for him.

I expressed my disappointment tonight on the broadcast situation for the Caribbean Series.

SCHEDULE: Series starts Monday February 1st

Josmil Pinto didn't play here as Perez' teammate.

***

On a side note, newly acquired OF Rymer Liriano was a teammate of Domingo Santana and Ariel Pena this winter in the Dominican Republic, and saw action in the final series that saw the Licey team come up one winning series short of a Caribbean Series slot.

On Friday, the Puerto Rico Championship Series continues, with Yadiel Rivera one win away and Hiram Burgos two wins away, respectively, from netting a Caribbean Series spot themselves.
