2015-2016 Winter League Updates

Mass Haas
I don't honestly know what scouts don't see in Perez. I see a powerfully built guy who makes decent contact, is a plus fielder and still is in his mid 20's. Sure he didn't walk much as a Brewer, but batting where he was in the Brewer lineup just ahead of the pitcher, it pays to be a little aggressive there. I read all these posts about this 3rd base prospect here and this one there, and I ask myself what I'm missing on Perez. If I were running the Brewers, he'd get a full time shot.

The fact he has absolutely zero ability to take a walk..... his batting average will be just as high as his on base percentage which means if he is not hitting at a high clip......he is pure worthless. He doesn't have a huge track record of always hitting the way a Scooter has to get away with a terrible approach at the plate

Rough game for his team (11-4 loss), but SS Orlando Arcia was 1-for-4 as he clubbed his first home run of the winter (his 6th extra-base hit). Arcia's line is now a fantastic .344/.405/.484 after 18 games. He was also part of three double plays on defense.

Newcomers in winter ball--

New minor league free agent signee RHP Daniel Tillman has made 12 appearances in the Puerto Rico Winter League, the most recent on December 1st (stats). Super impressive in the small winter sample.

***

22-year-old Minor League Phase Rule 5 RHP Kender Villegas (Cardinals) made two appearances in Venezuela back in October. They were brief and rough (19.29 ERA).

Venezuelan Box Thursday 12/10

David Stearns' very first 40-man roster move continues to look just fine as soon-to-be 31-year-old RHP Junior Guerra spun another four shutout innings -- Guerra sure looks like a perfect swingman option for the big league club, which has a bunch of one-inning bullpen guys on the 40-man...

4 IP, I H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 WP, 4 K, 59 pitches (38 strikes), GB:FO 5:1

Guerra was also staked to a 12-0 lead after three innings. He was scheduled to go that distance (or 60 pitches).

Ali Castillo grounds out, shortstop Heiker Meneses to first baseman Cesar Suarez.

Alex Romero singles on a ground ball to left fielder Ronnier Mustelier.

***

Dominican Box Thursday 12/10

SS Jonathan Villar was 1-for-3 (R, RBI, one K) in a 4-2 win. He did commit his 10th error in 30 games, ouch.

On the other side of the box score, Jason Rogers, playing first base, was 1-for-4 (run). Rogers has a nine-game hit streak, although only one of those games has been with more than a single base hit. Jason wraps up his winter season Friday in what will be his 38th winter game.

Rogers' teammate, RF Domingo Santana's winter-to-forget continued, as he was 0-for-4 (one K).

Translated -- Isn't there anyone who give away a trip to CHINA to Domingo Santana?

Tough crowd, Dominican twitter fans, and that's like the mildest...

Small sample size but yes Santana has been pretty horrible and striking out even more than usual. There has been a lot of talk of moving Braun to first so he can play but don't think that should even really be a consideration this year.

Nice surprise Friday night in the Dominican --

Box / Game Log (Game still in progress as of this post time, follow-up later)

Ariel Pena was saddled with the loss despite only allowing the one unearned run in this 2-1 loss.

Jason Rogers, playing left field, was 0-for-2 with two walks, and completed his winter work. Safe travels home, Jason!

Rogers finishes his 38-game stint batting .273 (40-for-147, ten XBH's, including three HR's). Seven walks a bit low -- overall, certainly nothing spectacular, but a decent stay, and Jason pocketed some coin along the way ;).

Third baseman Hernan Perez is slugging .477 (!) and did this in his 1-for-5 night in an 11-6 win --

Pitching Change: Sergio Escalona replaces Jake Hale.

Alex Nunez flies out to right fielder Jose Martinez.

Pitching Change: Ramon A. Ramirez replaces Sergio Escalona.

Pitching Change: Rafael Cova replaces Kyler Newby.

Wuilmer Becerra reaches on a throwing error by shortstop Heiker Meneses.

Ben Guez singles on a line drive to left fielder Ronnier Mustelier. Wuilmer Becerra to 3rd.

Translated reporting gives an indication of how big a microscope American players come under in Venezuela --

Outfielder Ben Guez, one of the last imported join the cause of the Tigers this season, is under fire from high command, because of low numbers and a tendency to add a high amount of strikeouts.

Guez has two doubles and a homer in 11 games, but with 21 strikeouts in 41 innings. That figure is almost triple his 9 hits, as of Friday.

"We still hope that can hit, but it works, we must do something," said the manager Eduardo Perez to journalist Gabriel Molina.

Guez has a line of .238 / .256 / .357, with a .613 OPS. O'Koyea Dickson, with a .687 OPS had to be fired, a couple of weeks ago.

Well, their team lost a 16-3 home game, and 3B Hernan Perez was 0-for-4, but Ben Guez, playing center field, had a nice game, hitting a two-run HR in the 5th that made it a 4-2 game at the time. Guez finished 1-for-2 (walk, K).

So "Ben Guez" is a short name, right? But the announcer stretches out the pronunciation here a bit --

SS Yadiel Rivera heard our rumblings and responded with a 3-for-3 game (double, run scored, sacrifice bunt) in a 5-0 win.

CF Omar Garcia got a rare start in his team's 2-1 win. He was 0-for-2 with a walk (caught stealing for the first time in four attempts this winter). Garcia has switched teams, and this was his first game action with Caguas; although he had appeared in 12 games prior, he had only worked four AB's in those games. Perhaps now he'll see more regular playing time, although he was pinch-hit for late in this one.

Domingo Santana was 0-for-4 as the DH (walk, K, caught stealing -- gee, rough night on the basepaths overall for the Brewers' guys), but Santana's team managed a 6-5 win. Santana has had an awful 75-at bat stint, just 14 hits (.187), only two of those for extra bases. He has struck out in 34.6% of his at-bats.

This game ended with neither player seeing additional action, Rivera's team walked off 3-2 in ten innings.

Pitching Change: Dereck Rodriguez replaces Hoby Milner.

Bryce Brentz singles on a ground ball to center fielder Isaac Ballou.

Pitching Change: Alex Claudio replaces Dereck Rodriguez.

Johnny Monell grounds into a force out, shortstop Elmer Reyes to second baseman Jesmuel Valentin. Bryce Brentz out at 2nd. Johnny Monell to 1st.

Generally speaking I don't think teams put a ton of stock in Winter League stats, but when they are skewed as badly as Santana's are, they have to be concerned.

.293/.370/.341/.711 is something they should be concerned with? I mean it's not stellar by any means but its not horrid and it's only been 10 games (46 PA).

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
