2015 Post Season Community Top 25 Prospect Poll is now open - come vote!

Brewer Fanatic Contributor

We would like to invite everyone to participate in our 2015 Post-Season BF.net Fan Community Top 25 Prospects voting. Lots of exciting things going on. Please take time and submit on this thread your top 25 Brewer prospects. Please feel free to list any resources or news that you feel might help people with their voting.

Also, please take the time to share your insights on players, especially newcomers and guys coming up in the lower ranks. It helps people who don't follow the minors that well with making their selections.

RULES

1. Submit your Top 25 prospects, in order, by end of day on October 21.

2. You MUST submit 25 prospects. If there are only 10 or 15 or whatever, your list will not be included. Feel free to post more than 25, just to show to others who just missed the cut.

3. Rankings are determined by total points. The top prospect gets 25 points, second prospect gets 24 points, etc.

4. If you submit your list and want to change something, just add the change to the thread. I'll accept changes up to the deadline.

5. Within a few days after the deadline, we'll publish the new BF.net Community Top 25.

Eligibility questions:

Rookie eligibility is determined by 50 IP or 130+ ABs at the major league level.

- Jason Rogers, Hernan Perez, Luis Sardinas, Shane Peterson, Domingo Santana, Taylor Jungmann and Corey Knebel are ineligible.

- Tyler Cravy, Zach Davies, Tyler Wagner, Ariel Pena, Wei-Chung Wang and David Goforth are all eligible.

I would encourage everyone to vote based upon the above criteria.

Player Notes:

- Pitchers Taylor Williams and Nathan Kirby will likely miss all of 2016 with Tommy John surgery.

Other notes:

- Please note that we have two Diazs in this organization. If voting for Brandon or Miguel Diaz, please be clear who you are voting for.

- We also have multiple Williams - Devin and Taylor (there might even be another one!). Just make sure you note who you are voting for.

- Please comment if you know other conflicts!

Newcomers to consider:

- OF Brett Phillips

- P Adrian Houser

- P Zach Davies

1. LHP Brent Suter - He just produces. He will be on a 40-man next year, will it be with the Brewers?

2. SS Orlando Arcia - Only question's if he is Opening Day 2016 or 2017 shortstop

3. OF Michael Reed - OBP skills, speed, and a MLB cup of coffee. 2016 CF for the Brewers.

4. OF Brett Phillips - A year in Colorado Springs will be awesome.

5. OF Trent Clark - Refined hitter who just hits.

6. SS Gilbert Lara - Were struggles in AZ fatigue or attitude?

7. RHP Jorge Ortega - Like Suter, he just produces.

8. RHP Zach Davies - Superb performance in Milwaukee

9. OF Demi Orimoloye - Power bat, but can he learn to draw walks?

10. LHP Josh Hader - Could be in the 2017 Brewers' rotation

11. OF Clint Coulter - What caused OPS to drop 200+ points, Brevard County or something else?

12. RHP Jorge Lopez - Power pitcher developed into potential ace.

13. 1B/3B Garrett Cooper - OBP skills and doubles power.

14. OF Victor Roache - In Huntsville, he flahsed power and some OBP skills.

15. UT George Iskenderian - shows the ability to hit for average and some OBP skills.

16. RHP Cody Ponce - Flashing potential in small sample

17. LHP Hobbs Johnson - Avoids the gopher ball.

18. OF Troy Stokes - OBP skills, some power, and speed.

19. LHP Wei-Chung Wang - Has pitched his way into a top 25

20. OF Monte Harrison - First overmatched, then injured.

21. OF Tyrone Taylor - Overshadowed as CF prospect by Reed and Phillips

22. SS Jake Gatewood - Helena numbers offer hope, but past struggles leave me skeptical

23. RHP Tyler Crvay - Solid at AAA, rough go in the majors

24. RHP Tyler Wagner - Should be in AAA this year

25. RHP Adrian Houser - Could find a spot in the Brewers bullpen for 2016.

Just missed:

26. SS/2B Blake Allemand - Hits for average.

27. C Adam Weisenburger - OBP skills and a good arm.

28. RHP Damien Magnifico - Actually closing at Biloxi and doing well

29. UT Malik Collymore - Versatile, OBP skills, some speed, a little pop.

30. RHP Rodrigo Benoit - Could he be another pitcher who just produces?

- EDIT: Swapped #1 and #2 on further reflection.

26. Dennis Sarfate

I've probably got Lopez at three and Lara at five more because of my heart than head. I'd love for Lopez to develop into a legitimate top of the rotation starter, and Lara's tools have made me weak in the knees for sometime. I'm also pretty pleased that I can have Michael Reed all the way down at 16, because I like him as a player and having 15 guys ahead of him is nice to see. And, yes, that's Dennis Sarfate coming in at number 26. :)

Thanks for all the hard work organizing this, Rielly.

1. Orlando Arcia

Not only is he hands down our top prospect but also a nearly universal top 10 prospect in all off baseball. Hope he can have a Lindoresque debut.

2. Brett Phillips

Tool continue to develop, speed, average, on base, cannon arm, emerging power.... All he needs to do is cut the Ks down a bit. 2017 starting CF

3. Jorge Lopez

Talk about a guy who has continue to grow each season! He is beginning to reach all his projections as he sits around 94 with dangerous curve and solid change. Very mature competitor on the mound.

4. Trent Clark

Professional hitter, he does it all with a bat. He is solid in outfield. Most inportant work ethic and hustle are far beyond others his age....he even jogs back to dugout after K's!

5. Josh Hader

Best Brewer lefty prospect since Parra or Braddock. Mid 90s arm with goofy arm slot make him extremely hard to hit. His off speed is improving. At 20 California League pitcher of year, 21 dominated AA including over 11ks per 9 & batting average below .200 vs him

6. Gilbert Lara

Very young, very skilled, from what I have read can be a little lazy and doesn't like to alway hustle. Kid was essentially a high school junior this past year so I won't judge to much. Tools to be a star though.

7. Monte Harrison

Freak athlete who can easily become an elite MILB prospect of he picks up in Wisconson where he left off in Helena. He's a weapon at plate & in the field.

8. Kodi Medeiros

He had a very good very for an 18 year old playing 22 year olds. Has long way to go with consistency but he does have a very lively arm to work with

9. Clint Coulter

Still had believe 2nd highest ops in FSL. Having a guy like him play in a place like that is difficult. He's a power hitter and I'm sure he will bounce back to hit .280 25 Hrs 85 RBIs next year in Biloxi

10. Jake Gatewood

If this kid can put it all together, watch out! He's is definition of boom or bust.

11. Michael Reed

Proved himself and got a September call up. Good things happen when u just get on base

12. Tyrone Taylor

A top Brewer prospect and fringe top 100 prospect to now middle of the back and no longer CF of future....it was a rough year for Taylor to say the least

13. Devin Williams

Young, hasn't really blown us away but he has been very solid showing promise.

14 Demi Orimoloye

Demi God is not even a man, he is a myth! No man could possess so much size, power, speed, arm strength, and natural ability....he's good

15. Cody Ponce

Will fly through system with a 96-98mph fastball and bulldog, attack you style

16. Adrian Houser

Too low, at worst he will be a great arm in the bullpen. He's young, power arm, good off speed stuff and has pedigree as he was an early 2nd rd pick

17. Yadiel Rivera

Took another leap forward, looks to be a top 2b,SS,3b utility man of the future

18. Tyler Wagner

Not to high on him, his floor is equal to ceiling but could eat innings and give you lie to mid 4.00ERA at MLB level

19.Victor Roache

Took a little stride forward this year as an overall better hitter, however, still ways to go. He to me is really comparable to a Khris Davis

20. Wei Chang Wang

Kind of a forgot man now, rough start, strong 2nd half. Still younger (23) with pretty solid stuff with lefty arm

21. Brandon Diaz

Unrated & overlooked a lot but after awful start he really turntable it up prior to season ending injury

22. Chris McFarland

McFarland I believe could be an MLB starting 2b. There is nothing flashy about him, no tools that make you drool or that standout but he is just a well rounded baseball player. He is just solid as can be. No big holes in his game, no huge pluses...just goes out and plays good baseball

23. Joantgel Segovia

Kid can flat out hit. May have no power...gap power for that matter but he just finds green all over the field at a very high clip.

24. David Denson

Still waiting for him to put it all together, potential is there. Needs to figure it out, Perry is right on his heels.

25. Jorge Ortega

Dominate. Best way to describe his season. Just throws strikes and attacks people. Now to really take another step, he will need to learn how to miss a bat....at least once in awhile

This list is getter much tougher each time, a lot of guys I had to leave off!

Rank Player Logic (or lack of)

1 Arcia: Biggest question is what is his ultimate offensive impact/ceiling?

2 Phillips: Will he show power outside of the Cali League? Until someone with a better medical knowledge than me tells me otherwise, I'm going to assume that not all nerve thumb issues are as severe as Braun's and he will be 100% for spring training. Still worried about that and the lack of information about it.

3 Lopez: Shows the value of scouting and patience with young, projectable arms. His stats looked like nothing prior to this year's breakout. Hard to imagine a draft's stock increasing 4 years later as much as the 2011 draft. A few less free passes would be nice. I expect he will be in the rotation permantly once the organization feels comfortable that he will not be super 2 eligible after 2018.

4 Clark: Hits, controls the strike zone, steals bases effectively. Long way to go, but Bobby Abreu comparison seems apt.

5 Medeiros: I'll admit I'm probably biased with this ranking because I only saw him pitch on 28 May which was probably his best outing. Hitters could rarely square up the ball or get good timing. Frequently worked down and off the heart of the plate early in the count. Sometimes overthrew his 4 seemer with 2 strikes vs. right handed batters.

6 Hader: Wouldn't be surprised if he started in AA in 2016 to continue to work on secondary offerings as 6000 ft. above sea level is not the place to develop breaking pitches. But a 21 year old left hander with a mid 90s fastball who is missing bats at an elite rate in AA has a ton of ceiling even if the mid projection is still a reliever.

7 Reed: Kind of in the awkward spot of a non-zero chance to be a productive regular in the majors, but no clear path to getting the at-bats at the big league level to prove it. People bemoan the loss of Brantley, Cain, and even Cruz; but it took a number of at bats before they became productive as they are today. Hopefully, the Brewers have the patience with Reed and they are rewarded similarly.

8 Ponce: It seems like a long time since the Brewers drafted a college prospect who showed the same or more velocity after they signed, but reports are good so far.

9 Lara: Admittedly would have liked to see better numbers after the glowing reports from 2014 instructionals, but you cant teach his tools. Hopefully produces more in year 2.

10 Coulter: Still some overall positives being younger and more productive than league average, but will need to show more production and consistency at the plate next year to get back to projecting as a big league regular. As much as the 2011 draft stock may have rose this season, the 2012 draft may have fallen.

11 D. Williams: Effective numbers for his first year in full season ball. A Jorge Lopez like velocity increase as he moves up the ladder would be nice. Hopefully, he is past whatever kept him in extended spring training to start the year.

12 Davies: Should be the 5th starter next season. The question is how effective can a relatively short right hander with ~90 mph fastball be. Though not the same quality on offerings, Mike Leake has produced 10 WAR in his controlled service time. Marcum was fun until the post season.

13 Harrison: Not much to say here outside of hopefully he comes back 100% without losing a step and breaks out with the bat. And I'm glad Sojourn Shelton doesn’t have to cover him this weekend….

14 M. Diplan: His season might not have been eye-popping but it was very good for a 18 year old in the minor's most hitter friendly league. His height may draw skepticism, but plenty of successful Dominican right handers (Pedro, Cueto, Danny Salazar) have had success as a starter at a similar stature

15 Gatewood: Still an undesirable K rate, but youth/time is still on his side.

16 Taylor: Seemingly regresses every year as he moves up the ladder. The lack of power this year was tough, swing change or not. Age is still on his side and there is still a high ceiling here, but I'm off the bandwagon without results.

17 Sneed: Seems like there is likely a big league future here of some sorts which is a cool thing to say about a 3rd rounder after his first full season.

18 Wagner: Getting minor leaguers out. But without plus velocity or any plus pitches and average minor league strikeout numbers, you wonder if he will be able to breakthrough after a 1st failed attempt at the big leagues

19 Kirby: I guess now we play the waiting game. Still even with the injury, I'd rather have the ceiling with risk, than a Mitch Haniger-esqe 4th outfielder pick.

20 Orimoloye: A long way from the big leagues, but the Brewer's low minors can probably put on some cool batting practice displays.

21 Houser: Will need to see some more before I believe his control gains are real. Hard for me to believe the Brewers fixed a pitching prospect with our outstanding pitching development track record, but if it is real; with his stuff, this ranking is 15-20 spots too low.

22 M. Diaz: Developmental path seems to be slowed by setbacks, but plus stuff remains.

23 Leal: He is old for his level, and his BABIP seems unsustainable, but at a premium position, if he can maintain an above average bat and defense, he is a prospect.

24 Woodruff: Excited about the advancements he showed throughout the year. Excited about that and plus velocity with a plus curveball.

25 Perry: I'm struggling to understand why teams passed on him over 400 times in the draft. Good control of the strike zone, and plus power. I'll take my chances that he can keep his weight at manageable level with professional conditioning for a plus bat in the 14th round.

Cuts:

Cravy: Might be a useful swingman, but not seeing anything more.

Pena: I thought he might have nice future in the bullpen, but didn’t translate for some reason. Organization seems to like him though.

Rivera: Light hitting middle infielder, I guess I don't really have a soft spot for that.

Suter: A sub 2 era in AA is noteworthy at any age. Unfortunately, the secondary numbers aren't as pretty and no plus tools. I guess intelligence might be a tool for a pitcher.

Roache: Somehow only 24 despite being drafted 4 seasons ago out of college. He may have raw power, but still has yet to translate to a >.200 ISO professionally.

Orf: Continues to be quietly productive as he moves up the ladder.

Barrios: That was a nice big league debut. A high velocity, ground ball reliever without Ks, Is he the Dominican answer to Dan Kolb? Ultimately would like him to miss more bats.

Magnifico: The K rate still doesn't match the velocity/elite reliever profile.

T. Williams: Maybe I'm punishing the injury too much by not including him after he was the buzz of spring training, but there is no guarantee the plus velocity will return after TJ

Cooper: Solid numbers, but admittedly hard to get super excited about a older, not-top pick, without a premium defensive position putting up solid, but not spectacular numbers.

J. Ortega: Hard to project when there is no big league precedent. Only guys who in bigs with similar K rates, are veterans struggling to hold a rotation spot (Buerhle, Pelfrey)

Wang: A nice bounceback but without the elite peripherals he showed prior to the rule 5 selection.

Ventura: Seemingly lost in the shuffle pitching alongside younger players or players with better tools, but his numbers were solid.

B. Diaz: Solid production, and should keep moving up the ladder, but not a breakout that screams big league future yet.

Denson: Gave an edge to Perry, because David has experienced failure while Tyrone has yet to.

Stokes: I like Stokes but he needs to outhit concerns about his height. Sure there are productive, short baseball players, but the correlations are otherwise.

Collymore: His Helena run seems highly BABIP flukey. Wish he was a middle infielder again.

Yamamoto: Sure he gives up a lot of dingers right now, but he is young and misses bats too. Seems like a nice project at this point

Walters: I like the "hope" of an upside pick as much as the next fan but he makes Orimoloye look polished.

Edit: missed Perry's round and pick in original post.

Thanks, Clancy, for kicking out the first list!

You are quite welcome.

Thoughts?

I guess you don't think highly of Medeiros?

Early-season struggles, and last season were on my mind. He also split between starting and the bullpen. Suter, Hader, Wang, and Hobbs Johnson all, to me seem to have done better. Suter just dominated this season, and I think he's shown he can be a part of the Brewers rotation as soon as 2016. Hader did the rotation.bullpen thing, but his ERA was 3.03 to Medeiros's 4.44. Wang posted a 3.40 ERS and 3 CGs this year overall. Hobbs Johnson was a dependable starter.

Medeiros has shown flashes, but a 4.44 ERA between the rotation and bullpen this year, and his 7.27 ERA last season have me in a "wait and see" mode. He's probably #31 at this point - I gave the edge to Benoit, whose 0.91 WHIP spoke volumes.

ZBTMP - Awesome sauce on your first post.....best list I have seen yet, and I love this last comment on Monte Harrison:

13 Harrison: Not much to say here outside of hopefully he comes back 100% without losing a step and breaks out with the bat. And I'm glad Sojourn Shelton doesn’t have to cover him this weekend….

1. Orlando Arcia - I want him up in May....Barry Larkin is my statistical ceiling comp for him

2. Maverick Phillips - Maverick needs to be cultivated a bit yet...see him as a Grady Sizemore as a Indians rookie type of player

3. Trent Clark - if the 15 class was redrafted, I think he would go top 7 as of now

4. Jorge Lopez - I am unduly proud of my June 27th post...it really tells you how quickly he has risen in the eyes of many

5. Gilbert Lara - the stats mean little to me right now..his age for level is just silly and the first hand initial reports support this lofty ranking

6. Josh Hader - have him ranked this high even though his most likely landing spot is as a top notch shutdown reliever because: A) that is pretty doggone good all in itself, 2) I think there is still a chance he develops his secondary's to the point that he becomes Chris Sale part deux

7. Zach Davies - did the Orioles corner the market on drafting skinny ass quality pitchers that end up with the Brewers?....Jimmy Key is my ceiling for him.

8. Michael Reed - excellent athlete that will 100% be a quality major league reserve...30% ish chance he becomes a solid starter in my estimation...tough guy to spot in rankings

9. Clint Coulter - power hitters that spend a full season in FSL should get combat pay

10. Tyrone Taylor - batted .340 during playoff run and is still regarded as Albert Almora type defensive outfielder.....

11. Adrian Houser - meteoric rise after the trade, but honestly, this is what he was supposed to be before underperforming as Astro...even so he was 21st ranked guy even with those below par Astro results in a super stacked Astro minor league system....no way he belongs in the 20's in Brewer prospect ranking given those facts...if our new GM had the profile of Jason Kidd, the same alegations that followed Kidd for the failed Larry Sanders for Lopez trade would be dogging Stearns - that Houston haul was so good...

12. Monte Harrison - if he gets all his speed back, just a dazzling type of player that I would love seeing play in outfield next to Clark for a decade or so

13. Devin Williams - this past year in Appleton was horrible, but it saw some extremely talented arms...Brevard is going to give up 7 runs all year next year

14. Cody Ponce - big guy with a mean streak....he will move at a rapid pace I believe

15. Marcos Diplan - Managers in Pioneer league loved him, even with control and results that made some dismiss him a bit....

16. Kodi Medeiros - scary prospect that can still boom, but needs velocity back to really excite me...should be noted that he did not give up any homers last year....

17. Nathan Kirby - i think this injury may have been a good thing for Brewers in long run....this guy has chance to be a top pitcher if he comes back to where he was before injury

18. Demi Orimoloye - Might be too low....hearing that more than one scout has said "holy crap" after seeing him in instructionals....if he ever collides with Monte Harrison in outfield, the resulting black hole created may suck up our universe

19. Jorge Ortega - I would love to see a Cy Young winner without a walk or k for a season

20. Yhonathon Barrios - 7 innings - 3 hits - 0 runs or walks with 7 k's in majors is a heck of a debut...the fact he converted to pitcher late makes the fact he is still 23 even more remarkable....any chance he could convert to starter?

21. Cy Sneed - i love the fact we were able to transport him from 1979.....the guy and his moustache are a throwback

22. Tyler Wagner - I have no clue where to rank him....

23. Jake Gatewood - still a believer...he has some tools that are pretty rare

24. Tyrone Perry - this spot could easily go to others, but something about Perry makes me think is a potentially special player

25. Angel Ventura - another guy from Rattlers staff I full expect to dominate the FSL next year....I left off Burkhalter, but I like him quite a bit too

Honorable mention: A ton of talent still there such as aforementioned Burkhalter, as well as Leal, Cooper, Roache, Rivera, Wang, Diaz and Colleymore....I am serious when I say that any of these guys would be in running for top 10 in a handful of other organizations....we have a very deep system

Thanks. Hopefully Amanda sticks around for a few more years while Chryst rebuilds the offense to previous levels, but that is off topic. The system pitching depth seems like it is in the best shape that it has been in for some time; hopefully, some of the toolsy rookie ball guys push our system to elite next year,

Took Stokes at 25 because any guy who impressed scouts enough that they overlooked his 5'8" stature and drafted him in the 4th round out of high school has to have some special talent. Also rewarding his nearly .100 point OPS jump in a higher level.
