3B?

ewitkows
Ryan McMahon will be turning only 21 as he heads into AA in the Rockies organization. Rockies have a young star at 3b already in the majors. McMahon has hit .297 with 47 HR's and an OPS of .897 in his first 3 years of professional ball (317 games). Bats left. By all reports he will stick at 3b and has Gold Glove potential.

But what would getting McMahon cost in terms of the Top 25 or Top 30 prospects?

If they (the Rockies) want pieces to try and win now you could offer up Lucroy or Peralta/Lind as part of a package. Otherwise we would probably look at sending them a minor league pitcher package starting with Lopez? Not saying I would want to do either, just throwing some ideas out there.

The Brewers have arguably 3 of the top 5 or so "5 year outlook" teams in their division right now, and the Reds' rebuild probably won't be pathetic either since they have a few pieces in place. I'm not a fan of "we need to fill this position at all costs" methodology as it is, but it would be downright laughable if they were worried about filling 3B right now.

This rebuild (especially due to divisional competition) is probably going to take 3 years at least. Why is anyone worried about filling 3B? You still have time to draft a stud (and fill with a stopgap vet if the rebuild goes quickly), trade for a stud prospect...or, if in 2019 the Brewers look primed to be very competitive and are chalk full of young pre-arby players, go blow your FA money on a 3B. I don't care if Adam Lind plays third base for the next 2-3 years. It's the difference between 64 and 67 wins next year probably if you go out and get Daniel Murphy.

There is no reason to freak out about filling a position when you have a multiple year rebuild. I thought Tom Haudricourt was the only one that harbored the worry about the deck chairs on the Titanic when it is already several hundred feet underwater.

This idea would be fine if it was 2012. I don't see the point right now and I don't see why he would sign here unless we paid him much more than anyone (which would mean we are overpaying). Plug in any of the number of mediocre infielders we have at 3B next year and see what happens, it doesn't matter. If there is some Casey McGehee (I mean when we first got him) type out there sure grab him and hope you get lucky, but no need to spend any money on this now. Need to get a 3B prospect back from possible Lind, Lucroy, Krod, Davis trades.

Asche is not totally unlike casey mcGehee when the Brewers got him the first time. He'd be a change of scenery former prospect who has run out of chances in his current organization.

McMahon would be an awesome pickup, but he's a pretty nice prospect already (MLB pipeline has him at #50), so he's going to cost a lot. The Rockies probably aren't going to want a veteran, so getting a third team involved would be the best way to get him. If you start talking big names - Lucroy, Peralta, etc., perhaps that's the way to make some kind of deal.

Ultimately, the Rockies want to sign Arrenado to a long term deal, so McMahon would potentially be available. But Colorado would probably want to wait until such a deal is finalized before trading McMahon.

Personally I would try to trade some of our younger big league pitching since they will start getting expensive when the next "wave" arrives. If you can fetch McMahon for any of Peralta, Nelson, Jungmann, etc. then I would do it. All of our top players from AA would be here by 2017 and that includes the likes of Houser, Hader, Lopez, and Wagner. Add that to Santana, Braun, Phillips, Arcia, and Reed. Add McMahon to that mix and now we are talking. Beyond these players you have the likes of Davies, Pena and Suter to give depth to the rotation. This is not even mentioning what you can get for Davis, Lind and Lucroy before then. Just my opinion.

I doubt Colorado would give away McMahon for Peralta, Nelson, or Jungmann. Peralta and Jungmann aren't good enough of prospects to fetch a top 50 young player and Nelson is still probably not good enough, plus, this sounds crazy, but the Rockies might be retooling again and probably don't want a guy that's already in the majors (I know that sounds silly, but when they come out of their rebuild he may be near the end of his contract).

Aren't the Rockies a few pitchers away from being an excellent ball team? I mean, their offense (yes, I know where they play) is very good so if they can figure out how to keep runs off the board, they should have a quick turn around.

What about flipping them Peralta, Krod and maybe another player for McMahon? Maybe we have to eat some salary but it would be a great get for our organization and would help them rebuild their pitching staff.

The Rockies always have a good offense. They're always at least a few pitchers away from contending though, and then some. Coors is where good pitchers go to die. K-Rod might give up 20 homers in 65 innings in Coors.

EDIT: In the last 7 years, the Rockies rank in the NL in runs scored is 1-1-2-3-2-3-2. So they are at worst, top 3.

They have finished .500 twice.

Last year they lead the NL in runs, and won 68 games. To say they are "a few pitchers away" from being an excellent team is disingenuous. They will always score runs because of their park. Jean Segura could probably go there and hit .300/.330/.450 and club 15-20 homers. But pitchers absolutely can't pitch there.

Point being..... Peralta just came off a really.....let's face it, a really bad year, and K-Rod is an aging reliever who gives up a lot of homeruns, and isn't exactly cheap. They aren't the types of pieces I'd be looking at if I were giving away a top 50 slugger.

I realize that you said "I know where they play" qualifier, but here is what their recent offenses (I kept some of the mainstays in it) would look like in a neutral field.

CF - Ben Revere (Blackmon)

RF - Carlos Beltran (current abilities) (Carlos Gonzalez)

SS - Jhonny Peralta (Tulowitzki)

3B - Todd Frazier (Arenado)

LF - Christian Yelich (Dickerson) - Stubbs platooned with him a few years ago to the most amazing H/A splits ever.

1B - Matt Adams/CJ Cron platoon (Morneau/Cuddyer) or Matt Clark/Jason Rogers platoon (Paulsen/Rosario)

2B - Adam Rosales or any AAAA caliber player (ALL STAR DJ LeMaheiu)

C - Tyler Flowers (Hundley/Rosario)

Philly beat writer says the Brewers showed interest in 3B Cody Asche this past summer. Asche is expendable because the Phillies have a stud in Maikel Franco.

http://www.csnphilly.com/baseball-philadelphia-phillies/look-ahead-what-will-be-interesting-phillies-offseason

Asche is has been mostly uninspiring during his 2.5 years in the big leagues. He's hit around .245-250 with a dozen HRs and an OPS between .689-.699 the last couple of years. He's lefthanded, doesn't walk a ton and strikes out at a pretty high rate.

I know Philly played him in the OF last year after Franco came up, but I don't know how his glove plays at 3B or anywhere else.

Asche is 25, so there's might be some improvement in him. In the minors he wasn't a big HR guy, but would hit .280-300 type guy with 10-15 HR. I don't remember much about when when I watched games against Philly, other than he didn't look real athletic. But that's my very limited exposure.

How about this trade...

Cody Asche 3B $1 mill

Ryan Howard 1B $25 plus 10 mill

for

Franco Rodriquez RP $7.5 plus 2 mill

Matt Garza SP $12.5 plus 12.5 mill

Trade Lind for prospects and save $8 mill

Let Howard play the first half of the season (I know he can hardly run) and see if he can rebound hitting wise , then trade him (AL DH playoff team) if you can or dump if you can't.

We end up Asche, prospects (from Lind trade), and more prospects (maybe) for Howard

and

save $6.5 mill

And why would Philly do that? They get two vets for a young player when they are rebuilding. Sure, they dump Howard but they get back a cheaper junk contract and a guy in Rodriguez they have no use for because they have Giles.

One man's junk is another man's prize. They might think Garza will rebound and then 12.5x 2 doesn't look so bad. KRod might be that 8th inning guy they crave. Far fetched, maybe, but you never know.

The Brewers definitely have a lot of depth in the OF in the minors. The depth in the OF is nice with Santana, Phillips, Clark, Harrison, Taylor, Reed, Roache, Coulter, and Orimoloye. I would rather try and get a stud pitching prospect with one of the extra OF's but getting someone like McMahon wouldn't be a bad idea. I am not sure if this is something the Rockies would do.

The Rockies do have an albatross of a contract with Reyes and they could save $10m if they include Reyes in the deal and take on Garza's contract. I think Reyes may have more value than that though but it will be hard to find someone to take a significant portion of Reyes contract without getting back a player who has about an equally as bad contract as Reyes does.

McMahon's a really nice prospect but he's what, 2 years ahead of Lara? If you trust Lara's the guy, find someone adequate for the next 4-5 years like a Cody Asche or splurge on a Daniel Murphy where you don't have to give up a ton in return and you can put a major league product on the field the next couple seasons.

4-5 years??? Sheesh, I sure wouldn't start worrying about reserving room for a player that hasn't even been in low A ball yet.

It would seem to me that Colorado would always want to take on minor league pitching in trades as they aren't going to sign any premium free agents. Especially guys that don't rely on breaking balls so much, so I would think the pitcher that we just acquired from the Astros with the big fastball (Hader/Houser can't keep straight?) would be someone of interest to them.

McMahon for Hader/Houser and one of our extra OFs like Harrison or T.Taylor? Too much, too little? Sure would be nice to fill that 3B hole.

From all I've read on this guy, too much for me. He could be a true impact arm for our organization. As much as I'd love to have McMahon on our team, I couldn't part ways with Hader just quite yet.

So much can happen in the next few years. I wouldn't be dying to strip away depth at another spot or trade pitching away to fill a hole when we shouldn't be worried about contending for a few years. We could find our next McGehee at 3B, we could draft a college 3B that is almost ready, we could net a 3B in a Lind trade, etc.

Even if all roads fail and the team is young and ready to be good in 2018, you can overspend on some stopgap vets to platoon there.

My thought would be to trade Garza and $6M for Chris Johnson. Then trade Khris Davis to Seattle for Patrick Kivlehan. Johnson can fill in until Kivlehan is ready to take over full time. Davis and Garza are both expendable with the emergence of Santana and Davies. All teams get better from this trade.

Two trades I would do. Johnson fills the hole for two years and Kivlehan looks like a good power hitting 3b for the future. It might cost a little more than Davis, which I am ok with.
