R.I.P. Joaquin Andujar

This story may seem a little insensitive right now, but please keep in mind that it happened 33 years ago and I was 16 years old. This is the first thing that came to my mind when I read about the passing of Joaquin Andujar....

It was the 1982 World Series and my buddies and I were lucky enough to have bleacher tix for all the home games (got selected out of the ticket lottery..$8.00 face per ticket!!). The always formidable Andujar was on the mound for the Cards. A liner was hit back up the box and struck him squarely and he fell to the ground (or at least that is how I remember it). My friends and I started shouting "Joaquin is dead! Joaquin is dead!" The lady behind us, even though she was a Brewer fan, was not thrilled with our immature antics and said to us in a very snarky tone.."Is Joaquin dead?" ...we looked at each other, cracked up, and continued with our shouting.

I thought he was hurt by a liner in Game 7..... I remember getting reprimanded by my parents for rejoicing that he was hurt.

I am too young to remember seeing him pitch, but oddly enough, my dad and I were just talking about him a few weeks ago. I mentioned in one of my usual rants about the Cardinals how much I hated that organization and he told me that it was even bad in '82. He mentioned Andujar specifically as being a guy that our fans hated that WS and that he almost got into with Jim Gantner at one point. RIP to him, obviously these are just recollections from thirty plus years ago. I am sure he was a decent guy off the field.

Nope. Game 3. I was there. LF Bleachers Section C Row 1 Seat 3. Willie McGee (!?!?!?) hit 2 dingers. Broke my heart.

We were not far from you. Left Center...a little farther up. Wasn't there some fan interference controversy with one of those McGee HR's? That wasn't you, was it? I think I still have the paper from that game with the picture of the fan reaching out to catch the ball.

I recall that as well but I thought that was in the ALCS vs the Angels. A fan grabbed the ball away from Oglivie. Now I'll have to find my old team yearbook that has a photo of the event inside.

Ahh..you may be correct. I knew that it was in LF and involved Oglivie in some manner. I want to say that the guy was wearing a white sweater (I'm going to have to dig up the paper when I get home).

I think you're both correct. I didn't watch Game 3, but didn't one of McGee's homers barely clear the fence?

I most remember Andujar from Game 7 of the '85 World Series. He was brought in to relieve after John Tudor and others were shelled. Andujar clearly was not happy being used in a game in which the Cards were losing by 11 so he got himself tossed and headed to the showers. Herzog got tossed too.

Game 4. They called him the "Phantom Fan." He needed a police escort out of the bleachers.

Kinda weird to see an umpire quoted in a story. Don't see that anymore do you?

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006
