Nevin Ashley's contract purchased; Sardinas recalled; Kintzler and Guilmet outrighted to AAA

And That

Per the Brewers' Twitter account.

Ashley had a really nice season in Colorado Springs. He'll be making his major league debut at 31 years of age. He was apparently chosen to be the third catcher in lieu of of Juan Centeno, which bodes ill for Centeno's 40-man roster status. Matt Clark was also not recalled, which would seem to put his 40-man status in peril as well.

Speaking of that, the 40-man roster stands at 37 now. I don't offhand recall the Brewers' 40-man being so low at this point in the season before.

I thought we might see Michael Reed get a cup of coffee this year. Apparently not, at least not yet. Hope to see Jorge Lopez up after the Shuckers' season is over.

Hopefully Counsell will use Sardinas as the RH platoon partner with Gennett and maybe give Segura a day off here and there. Herrera's been a nice story but he's not a good RH hitter. Can't understand why Counsell didn't just let Gennett face some lefties. He couldn't do worse than Herrera.

He has been beyond pitcher-batting bad against lefties. Scooter has a .295 OPS against lefties so far. Herrera's is .654.

Gennett made two starts vs. LHP, both in April, when he wasn't hitting anyone, right or left. He gets maybe one AB per week against them now always against lefty relief specialists who are especially tough on LH hitters. He crushed LHP in his stint in Colorado Springs hitting .375/.412/.688 in far more chances (32) than he's had since in Milwaukee. Herrera's OPS vs. lefties is down to .605 by the way.

If Gennett could see a particular lefty more than once a month and starters who aren't particularly effective against LHP, he's a good enough hitter to match or better what Herrera's doing against them. Allowing him only to face the premier lefty specialist types a couple times a month only enhances a false narrative that he can't hit them.

True, but Herrera is not part of the future, while Scooter MAY be in some fashion. I doubt Scoot will ever hit LHP, but if there's ever been a time to give him a bunch of ABs against them, it's now.

Yea!, burning more service time for Sardinas for absolutely no reason.

With Arcia on the near horizon there is a very real chance that the Brewers shop Segura this offseason and go with Sardinas at SS next year. Possible they shop Gennett too, if they are eyeing Arcia at SS and Sardinas at 2B in 2017.

He's a decent prospect, but not someone who will likely break the bank in arbitration.

If Maldonado is just handed the backup role next year, then the Brewers are a dumb baseball team. He might only be a backup that gets the least amount of playing time but you cannot hit under .200 and keep your spot. Not without a fight anyways.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Sardinas is a prospect but he doesn't carry a "can't miss" label. In fact he doesn't even have a position that he's an heir apparent to. He might be an adequate 2B at some point allowing them to perhaps deal Gennett sooner or later, but nothing yet suggests he's on a level above Scooter. Certainly not offensively.

Service time is an issue for guys that project to make $10+ million or more per season down the road. I wouldn't put Sardinas in that category. That's not saying he won't get there but odds are against it.

Sardinas has done absolutely nothing at AAA to say he is ready to play at the MLB level. So why trade Sardinas' age 28 season which may be valuable for the Brewers for a 23 year old season when he will almost certainly stink, may impact his development and even if he is good provide absolutely no value to the Brewers? If they move Segura they would still be better getting some miLB FA and having him play SS.
