Tonight's start for 22-year-old RHP Jorge Ortega, up to Colorado Springs from Brevard County, is fascinating on a few fronts.

The young Venezuelan (won't be 23 until next June) is befuddling in the most intriguing and wondrous ways.

He doesn't strike anybody out, he doesn't walk anybody (yes, exaggerations but click the link for the amazing numbers).

He is an extreme fly-ball pitcher (or is it extreme pop-up pitcher - how do you do that when you don't K anyone?).

These rates are nothing new -- this was Ortega in two years in the DSL, in Maryvale, and in Helena.

The Brewers knew something, they jumped the complete-game-machine super-efficient Ortega right past Wisconsin after spring camp and plugged him into the Manatee rotation.

And tonight he goes from Brevard's Space Coast Stadium (0.94 WHIP, 2.01 ERA in nine starts) to Colorado Springs' Security Service Field.

Oh yeah, Milwaukee must make the decision whether to protect the young man from Rule 5 this fall. That list of eligibles is pretty long, lots of choices.

So is showcasing Ortega at AAA, even for just one start, going to lock in his 40-man roster status this fall? One way teams will carry a young RHP in Rule 5 is if the kid can be a strike-thrower at minimum.

Good luck, tonight, Jorge!

Both Ortega and Brent Suter need to be on the 40-man roster... and both are very interesting options for the 2016 roster.

Wish the Brewers had gotten him to the Arizona Fall League...

Early Runs Propel Tortugas to 4-1 Victory

Routt Throws Gem for Daytona in Win Over Brevard

By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees

Viera, FL - The Daytona Tortugas (39-25, 76-58) scored four early runs and held off a late charge in a 4-1 victory over the Brevard County Manatees (26-39, 55-79 overall) in front of 3,452 fans on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Daytona scored a pair of runs to take the lead in the top of the second inning. With one out, Chad Wallach doubled to left field against Brevard County starter Zach Hirsch. Ronald Bueno then singled to center and plated Wallach. Blake Trahan laid down a bunt up the first base line. Hirsch fielded the ball with his glove, but his flip to first was wide of the bag. Trahan reached on the single and Bueno moved to third on the Hirsch error. After Wendell Soto was called out on strikes, Hirsch uncorked a wild pitch and allowed Bueno to score. After two innings, Daytona led, 2-0.

The Tortugas added another two runs in the third frame. With no outs, Ty Washington reached on a throwing error by Chris McFarland. Brian O'Grady then singled to right field and Washington moved up to second. After Daniel Pigott and Jeff Gelalich were retired by Hirsch, Chad Wallach drilled a two-run double to left-center field. Wallach's second double of the game made it 4-0, Tortugas.

Hirsch (1-4, 4.89 ERA) was lifted after three innings. He surrendered four runs - one earned - on six hits. He did not walk a batter and fanned four.

Tristan Archer was the first man out of the bullpen for Brevard County. He threw five shutout innings and did not allow a hit. He walked one and struck out eight batters.

The Manatees got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning. Clint Coulter led off the frame with a single to left field. Two batters later, Dustin Houle drilled a double down the right field line that plated Coulter. Daytona starter Nick Routt fanned the next two batters to escape further damage.

Routt (6-3, 3.47 ERA) surrendered just one run on four hits over seven frames to earn the win. He did not walk a batter and struck out nine.

Brevard County threatened again in the eighth. Scott Brattvet came on in relief before the inning. With two outs, Omar Garcia singled to right field. Garcia recorded three hits on the night. After a McFarland single, Daytona went to the bullpen again and called on El'Hajj Muhammad. Muhammad retired Coulter to end the threat.

Muhammad allowed just a one-out double to Houle in the ninth and recorded his 17th save of the season.

The Manatees and Tortugas will conclude the regular season tomorrow night in Daytona Beach. RHP Javi Salas (8-8, 4.26 ERA) will toe the rubber for Brevard County. First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m.

Brevard County Box Score

Zach Hirsch has mostly struggled in his time with the Manatees. Tristan Archer with a great 5 inning performance though. His line tonight was: 5 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 8 K. Has to be one of his most dominant outings of the year. Omar Garcia had 3 hits. In addition to going 2 for 4 and driving in the only Manatee run with a double, Dustin Houle has now raised his batting average to .300 in his brief time with the Manatees. Going into tonight's game, Dustin was hitting .302/.356/.434 at all levels on the year. He is one of the guys the Brewers will have to make a decision on this year and they don't have a lot of catching prospects. His arm strength seems to be back after Tommy John surgery and this was one of his strengths as a prospect. He picked a runner off 2nd yesterday.

I hadn't realized Ortega was bumped to AAA. Awesome. Given Wagner is on the 40-man, I expect him back. I also could see Lopez and Ortega. While the organization may say Garza is back next year, I think there's a very decent chance we try to deal him and $15million for a decent prospect.

Bullpen shines, but Shuckers fall to Smokies 7-2 on Saturday

BILOXI, MS - The Biloxi Shuckers dreams of taking the second-half divisional crown ended with a 7-1 loss to the Tennessee Smokies on Saturday night, in front of a crowd of 4,186 at MGM Park. Despite the loss, the Shuckers will still host the first two games of the Divisional round of the playoffs starting next Thursday. Biloxi's opponent has yet to be determined, as the race for the Southern League South is now between the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, Mississippi Braves (0.5 GB) and the Mobile BayBears (1 GB).

Biloxi (34-33) fell behind early for a second straight night as Jacob Hannemann tripled to start the night for Tennessee (36-32) and came in to score on a misplayed groundball to Garrett Cooper at first off the bat of Dan Vogelbach. Jeimer Candelario's two-run home run two batters later put the Shuckers in a three-run hole at the end of half on an inning.

Cooper's (0x2, BB) six-game hitting streak came to an end with the hitless performance, though the 24-year-old did draw a walk to extend his on-base streak to seven games and his average sits at .600.

Biloxi starter Adrian Houser (4-1) could not get out of the third inning on Saturday night, starting the third by having the first six batters reach safely with three hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch before being pulled for Jed Bradley. In two-plus innings, Houser allowed seven runs - five earned - on five hits, two walks and two strikeouts on 56 pitches.

Bradley gave up a sacrifice fly to Anthony Giansanti and walked Stephen Bruno to start his night, but would retire the final 10 men he faced, striking out a season-high five.

Orlando Arcia (1x4, RBI) drove in the first run of the game for the Shuckers in the sixth inning. Adam Weisenburger (0x2, R, BB) started the frame with a walk and moved up on a single by pinch hitter Nick Ramirez (1x2). After Yadiel Rivera (2x4) grounded into a double play, advancing Weisenburger to third, Arcia punched a grounder up the middle to plate the runner from third.

Martin Viramontes tied a season-high with three innings of work out of the bullpen and set a season-high with four punchouts.

Victor Roache (2x4, HR, RBI, R) added a two-out solo shot in the ninth to bring the Shuckers within five.

Biloxi will look to even the series in game four on Sunday night. LHP Josh Hader (1-3, 2.94) takes the mound for the Shuckers, while the Smokies will have RHP Ryan Williams (10-2, 2.79). First pitch is scheduled for 5:10 p.m., with coverage beginning at 4:55 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to www.biloxishuckers.com.

BURLINGTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers outhit the Burlington Bees on Saturday night at Community Field, but the Bees defeated the Rattlers 10-6 in the opening game of the final series of the 2015 season. The Timber Rattlers banged out 15 hits, but stranded eleven runners and couldn't overcome an deep, early deficit.

Burlington (61-76 overall, 26-42 second half) took the lead in the second inning. Zach Houchins and Trevor Gretzky singled to start the inning and put runners on the corners. Trever Allen grounded into a 5-4-3 double play that scored Houchins and the Bees were up 1-0.

Burlington added four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Brandon Gildea tripled with one out and scored on a single by Ayendy Perez. Taylor Ward drew a walk with two outs to extend the inning. Houchins drove in Perez with a ground rule double to deep center. Gretzky followed with a two-run single and the Bees were up 5-0 against starting pitcher Eric Hanhold.

Wisconsin (50-87, 27-40) rallied to within a run with two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Sthervin Matos started the fourth inning rally with a two out single. Omar Cotto tripled off the top of the wall in right to score Matos. Luis Aviles singled to get Cotto home and the Rattlers were down 5-2.

In the fifth, David Denson reached on an error and Jake Gatewood lined a home run to left. The homer was Gatewood's fourth of the year with Wisconsin and made the score 5-4.

The Bees extended their lead in the fifth inning against reliever Luis Ortega. Tim Arakawa singled to start the inning. Ward followed with an RBI double. Later in the inning, Gretzky made it 7-4 with a sacrifice fly to drive in Ward.

In the sixth inning, the first two Burlington batters reached base against Ortega and Luke Curtis took over on the mound for the Rattlers. Curtis retired the first two batters, but walked Arakawa to load the bases. Ward drew another walk to force in a run for the Bees.

Greg McCall, who had three hits in the game for the Rattlers, knocked in Elvis Rubio from third base with a two out single in the top of the seventh inning to bring Wisconsin to within 8-5, but the Bees added two runs in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Tyler Linehan. Perez doubled with two outs and the bases loaded to put the Bees up 10-5.

There was a scary incident in the top of the eighth inning. Tucker Neuhaus was at the plate with two outs and none on base when he fouled a pitch into the dirt on a check swing. The ball bounced up and hit plate umpire JC Velez in the throat. Velez took a few steps back, moved over to the grass, and went down to a knee. He was tended to by the athletic trainers, who put Velez on his side. A pair of doctors in attendance at the game were called to the field to help treat Velez. An ambulance was summoned to the stadium and paramedics took Velez off the field on a stretcher.

The game resumed with base umpire CJ Davis taking over behind the plate as the only umpire.

Gatewood started a two-out rally in the top of the ninth with a single on a 3-2 pitch against Gaither Bumgardner. McCall followed with a single. Then, Matos drove in Gatewood with another single. Matos finished his night 4-for-5 with a double, three singles, and an RBI. Bumgardner ended the game by retiring the next batter.

Saturday was the second four-hit game of the season for Matos. He also had four hits in a game at Peoria on August 23. Prior to that game, Matos was hitting .198. Including Saturday night, Matos has moved his average to .228 - 30 points - in his last eleven games.

The Timber Rattlers and Bees play game two of their series at Community Field on Sunday afternoon. Cody Ponce (2-1, 2.41) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Justin Anderson (9-9, 3.61) is set to start for Burlington. Game time is 2:00pm.

The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 1:40pm. The broadcast is also available on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Well at least this team has shown character all year, it's not lip service, they battle till the bitter most nights.

Eric Hanhold had a very rough initiation to pro ball after being a 6th round pick this season, there hasn't been much for him to hang his hat on. Luis Ortega also struggled most of the year: I've discussed his delivery many times, he's inconsistent in every way imaginable from his feet up through his release point, and he has a ton of moving parts in his delivery to top it off. He's just not athletic enough to overcome all the unecessary complications he has going on. He finished poorly with an ERA over 7 through his last 10 appearances, season stats here. Tyler Linehan might make another appearance on Monday but his forgettable season is likely over as well. He had a very rough middle of the season but had been closing out the year incredibly strong until today. Check his splits to see how uneven his season has been... 2013 9th rounder doesn't have much stuff at this point, he's a command guy.

Rattlers pounded out a ton of hits as mentioned in the story, but true to form there just weren't enough hits strung together. Check the box for the details...

Something has clicked for 24-year-old RHP Tristan Archer with Brevard after a rough June and middling July. I tweeted this last night --

After five hitless IP Sat., RHP @TRISTAN_archer's last seven outings w/@BCManatees: 25.1 IP, 17 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 26 K, an incredible run

Kudos to Archer, but pitching coach Dave Chavarria gets a shoutout as well...

Hip Hip, Jorge! Ortega Wins Sox Debut

Recently Promoted Starter Impresses Over Six Frames as Sky Sox Down Zephyrs, 6-4

Jorge Ortega impressed in his Triple-A debut, allowing just one run over six strong frames in the Sky Sox 6-4 win. (Paat Kelly photo)

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - Led by a 22-year old making his Triple-A debut on Saturday night, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox handed the New Orleans Zephyrs a 6-4 loss before a crowd of 7,639 at Security Service Field.

Venezuelan right-hander Jorge Ortega (1-0, 1.50) worked six strong innings in his Sky Sox debut after earning a promotion from High-A Brevard County on September 1st. Ortega scattered eight hits and a walk over the six frames, striking out three and allowing just one run along the way. The lone blemish on the starter's line came in the Zephyrs second when he allowed three consecutive one-out singles, with the last plating a run off the bat of shortstop Austin Nola. The RBI knock put New Orleans up 1-0 after an inning and a half of play and would be the last they put on the board until their last team plate appearance.

Colorado Springs would not trail for too long as Michael Reed knotted the ballgame at one against Zephyrs starter Blake Logan (1-4, 4.76) in the Sox fourth. The outfielder would drive Matt Clark home with an RBI single to tie the contest at one after four innings of play.

The Sky Sox tacked on another run in the home fifth when Pete Orr plated Kyle Wren with an RBI single of his own to give Colorado Springs their first lead of the night. The Sox would maintain the newly claimed one-run lead until breaking through for four runs in the bottom of the eighth.

With Ortega departing after the sixth having impressed on the mound and at the plate (recorded a line drive single in his first Triple-A plate appearance in the Sox third), Rob Wooten and Jeremy Horst would combine to toss two perfect frames, keeping the 2-1 lead alive for the Sox. Left-hander Greg Nappo provided two shutout innings of relief work for New Orleans as the one-run game headed to its final two frames. Logan left the game after tossing five innings of two-run ball, allowing six hits and two walks while striking out two.

The Sky Sox would add what ultimately proved to be critically important insurance runs in the home eighth with closer Jaye Chapman warming in the bullpen. The Colorado Springs offense sent eight batters to the plate in the frame with four collecting base hits and one reaching via free pass. Nevin Ashley added the first insurance run with an RBI sac fly to right field before Matt Long and Wren teamed up to drive in the final three Sox runs on a single and double respectively. The Sox would victimize reliever Craig Stem in the big frame as all four runs were charged to the righty in his lone inning of work.

Colorado Springs took their much stronger 6-1 lead into the ninth with Chapman coming in to close it down. The righty had originally been warming to come in for a save situation, but with the four-run eighth, would simply look to secure the seemingly easy win.

The Zephyrs would get to Chapman for three runs on three extra-base hits in the top of the ninth. Austin Wates doubled to leadoff the frame before coming home to score on an Austin Nola triple. Pinch-hitter Kila Ka'aihue plated Nola with an RBI groundout in the following at-bat to cut the New Orleans deficit to 6-3 with one out in the inning. Isaac Galloway added to the crooked frame with a solo blat to left-centerfield, pulling the visiting side within two runs of tying the contest. Chapman would settle down however, getting his next two batters in order to end the 6-4 ballgame. The Sky Sox improve to 61-80 with the win as they drop New Orleans to 57-85 with just two games left to play in 2015.

Colorado Springs looks to make it two straight with a win in game three of this four-game set against these same Zephyrs on Sunday afternoon. Left-hander Wei-Chung Wang (NR) makes his Sky Sox debut against New Orleans righty Jake Esch (1-2, 3.96) with first pitch slated for 1:35 PM MDT (2:35 Central) from Security Service Field.
